Waking up to Brendon Urie facing you with his eyes wide open and a huge grin on his face is a good way to start your day. Ruby realized this the moment she woke up in that situation.
“Good day sleepy head, how did you dream?” Brendon said and he tickled her side slightly, causing her to squirm.
“Pretty good,” She rubbed her eyes, “How about yours’?”
He smiled and stroked a piece of her hair, “It was decent enough.”
She laughed and curled against his neck. She breathed him in, and felt him trace circles on her bare back. “Brendon,” she laughed, “Stop!”
“But I didn’t know you were ticklish!” Ruby could already picture the look on innocence on his face. “I like making you laugh.”
“Well don’t do it when it’s so easy!” She squirmed again, and he started to tickle her abdomen instead. “Brendon!”
“Okay, okay,” he said and his arms settled back around her waist and pulled her close to him.
They lay quiet, listening to each other breathing.
“Can you believe we’re both leaving tonight?” Brendon sighed. “I never knew two weeks could pass so quickly.”
Ruby frowned against his chest, “You didn’t have to remind me about that.”
Brendon smoothed her hair. “We’ll have to face reality some day.”
If only she didn’t have to, Ruby would remain in that moment forever.
------------------------
Ruby’s flight left at approximately midnight, while Brendon’s left at one AM. They got there at seven o’ clock, and sat around and watched people walk by. Spencer’s and Brent’s parents were there to see everyone off, and Ryan was busy talking on the phone with someone who Ruby didn’t know.
“Remember to study for your SAT’s. We agreed that you’d take it next year just to see what it’s like!” Ruby wondered if perhaps Ryan Ross was someone’s father, but she knew better than to jump to conclusions.
“He sounds like someone’s father,” Brendon said bluntly into her ear. She was leaning against him while they waited for the boarding time.
She smiled and continued to watch Ryan pace back and forth with a worried expression on his face. “Who is he talking to?”
“Just this girl,” Brendon said easily, “He’s practically like her mother, brother, sister, and father- only they’re not related and don’t live in the same house.”
“Oh.” She let her eyes follow him until Ryan’s eyes caught hers. He grinned sheepishly and turned away.
“So, I know we’ve both put this off to the very end,” Brendon said sadly, “But… what’s going to happen now?”
Ruby sighed and sat up, looking Brendon right in the eye. “What do you want to happen?”
“I want us to be together,” he said seriously. “I want to be able to visit you in New York and call you while you look at the picture of me that you tape onto your mirror at home.”
She laughed, “On my mirror?”
He smiled, “Maybe on your canvas, since you’re always looking at one.”
Overhead, New York was being called.
Ruby paused, letting the intercom finish it’s warning before standing up. “Is that so I’ll always look at you?”
“Yes.” He stood, “Because I’m so good looking, and no other college artist will ever live up to me.”
She wrapped her arms around his neck, tracing circles in the way she always did. “A bit conceited there aren’t we?”
Brendon shook his head, already leaning in. “No, I just want to make sure I’m the only one your mind will think about.”
They kissed for as long as they could, and once they pulled away Ruby could already tell that things wouldn’t be the same. She missed him the moment she turned the corner and he left her sight.
