Hey There, Delilah (1-Delilah's P. O. V.)

Chapter 13 : Hey There, Delilah (13-Delilah's P. O. V.)

Max's best friend for nine years, whom he trusts more than anyone, has been telling him that everything’s great, everything’s awesome… when in reality, it’s not. Based on the hit Plain White Tees song “Hey There Delilah” and inspired by karrababy05’s “Hey There Delilah (Twilight Version)." (And I know Harvard's not in NYC, but I figured it's fiction anyway, so who cares?)

“Maria!!!” I screamed the name for the world to hear. Maria was running towards me, pulling two large navy blue suitcases behind her. I ran full-speed towards her, and when I was about five feet away she dropped both of the handles and I flung myself onto her. She spun me around as if I was a little kid.

“I’ve missed you beyond belief, Lilah!!!”

“I’ve missed you more!” She put me down and picked up her suitcases again. I took one from her, and we pulled them along through the airport. “But we don’t have to worry anymore, because we’re together again. So how’re you feeling? I know it’s not exactly a short flight from Minneapolis to New York.”

“Hungry.” The two of us laughed together. Maria’s laugh was like magic; it could literally lift a thousand of the saddest spirits. “But other than that, I feel pretty good. Can’t wait to start dancing again.”

“So I’m guessing you’re pretty excited for school to start?”

“Hell, yeah! How’s school with you so far?”

“Hard,” I said, “but worth it. Totally worth it.” Actually, when I thought about it, it wasn’t really worth it… but I didn’t tell Maria that.

“You’ll make a great lawyer someday, Lilah.”

“Thanks.” If only I really wanted to be a lawyer. For almost my entire life I’ve wanted to be a Broadway star. I’ve wanted it ever since I saw my first Broadway play when I was seven. But there was no way I’d tell anyone that, except maybe Max. I can’t sing very well, and I guess my acting is okay, but my dancing… “So you’re going to teach me how to dance, right?”

“I’ll try, Lilah, but I don’t know how well it’ll work out.” She laughed, and I laughed with her, only not as good-naturedly. “It’s not you, I mean, I’m sure you’re a great dancer, it’s just that I’m not a very good teacher.” That made me laugh for real.

“You’re a better teacher than I am. Max still doesn’t understand break term.”

“Break term? Wasn’t that in, like, ninth grade?”

“Yep. Just goes to show, huh?”

“Max is a slow learner, too.”

“You’re telling me! Speaking of Max, how’s he doing?”

“I don’t know, we don’t talk that much… but I did call him yesterday to say goodbye. He seemed kind of… out of it, if you know what I mean.” We walked out of the airport and breathed in the smog-filled air of New York City.

“…No, I don’t. But whatever. Come on, let’s get something to eat. I know this great place a few blocks away from where Thalia lives.”

“Thalia?”
“I haven’t told you about her yet?” She shook her head. “Oh, she’s awesome, you’ll love her. Her little sister Theresa’s going to Ailey too. I’ve met her, she’s cute. Maybe you two could be friends.”

“Maybe.”

“Oh, by the way, I can’t really hang out much during the weekdays because of all the work I have, but I’ll be free most weekends.”

“You’ve figured this out after only two weeks?”

“Yeah.” No.

We walked to the restaurant filling each other in about what’d happened the two weeks we’ve been apart. It felt so good to have her back.
