Chapter 9 : Get What You Deserve?
Cloud was following Namine the entire time.
She walked to the gondola and Cloud walked up behind her.
"Namine..."
"I knew you were following me..." she said, walking on the gondola with Cloud and sitting down.
She then began to explain herself.
He tried his best to fall back asleep, yet thoughts of Namine clouded his mind.
It was awkward being in the same room as Yuffie, and trying to stay asleep. It quickly occurred to him that life seemed just like it was before, as if things hadnt changed at all.
They walked back in the room, awkwardly.
Neither of them said a word, yet Yuffie and Namine were the only ones who knew Cloud enough to see that he was at least a little bit shaken from the information she's told him.
"What's wrong, guys..?" Yuffie asked.
Namine looked to the floor, then walked over to L and knelt down next to him.
"Lawliet..." she whispered, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Wake up."
Cloud, though, remained silent.
"Doushita nano..." L said quietly. He pretended to waken up even though he had actually been awake for a while now.
Things just seemed quiet afterwards except for Namine's soft voice.
"Get up... We're gonna go, now..."
L looked up at her, "A-alright..." He said, slowly getting up alongside her.
And they walked.
Out of the hotel and away from the Gold Saucer.
As they walked out, Cloud spoke for the first time in a while.
"We're going to a little place called Gongaga... after that, it's Nibelhiem... and to get to Nibelhiem, we need either a few chocobos that can cross rivers, which is hard to find... or we freeze it over and walk over."
Namine simply nodded as she listened.
"Chocobo?" L said in confusion, ".... What are those?"
Namine looked at him and quietly spoke, "It's like a giant chicken that you ride on." she said, folding her hands and smiling.
"A... giant chicken?" L asked, with the confused look on his face. "This place is so hard to understand...."
Namine smiled slightly. He was clueless. "Yeah... but it is more peaceful." she said, regarding the issue of Kira.
L looked at her oddly, "Peaceful? Really, Namine.... a power company is in control of the most powerful military in the world. Their leader is corrupt, and one of their top ranking military officers is running loose going on his own accord!"
He tied to calm imself, "I know that my world is dangerous.... but I would feel better with you in my world than here; whoever Sephiroth is.... I dont like him, and I wont feel safe unless you're successfully protected from him...."
Namine took a step back. "Cloud is a great guardian, and I have nothing to worry about when it comes to Sephiroth-- I can handle myself! I'm not just a little girl anymore, L, I'm nineteen years old!" she exclaimed. She felt belittled by the fact L didn't seem to have much confidence in her.
Cloud put his hand on her shoulder. "He is right, Namine." he said quietly, as if he half meant it and half thought he was against himself for saying it. "Sephiroth is dangerous, and the only ones here to protect you are myself and Yuffie..." he said. "Whoever is making your world so difficult to live in must be tough, but Sephiroth is a much worse entity then anyone could ever face, and a fragment of him is in your head, talking to you in your sleep--"
"Kadaj isn't harmful in the least!" she snapped at him, her eyes grew teal.
As soon as Cloud looked at her funny, Yuffie went up to her and grabbed her wrist, dragging her along. "Come on... we have to get to Gongaga Town before feuding." she said, walking fast as Namine tried to get her to let go.
"Let go of her, Yuffie..." he said, walking ahead of the group. "She can walk on her own. She's a big girl now." He mocked, turning her words back on her.
Namine blinked at him, then a sly smirk grew on her pale lips, and Yuffie let go.
"Thanks, Cloud." she said, and they all continued to walk like nothing happened. That was perhaps the first time anyone argued with Namine...
She looked at L, half-smiling as the others walked ahead and folded her hands, like she always used to. "I promised myself that I would find Roxas before returning to that world... I don't want to break another promise." she said, then proceeding. "You understand." she said with her back turned.
L stood still, watching all the others walk off. He didn't know what to say to Namine, or any of them. They were like a whole other species.
"I dont understand this place at all... I dont understand you people either...." Said L, with his head facing the ground.
"Maybe it's because I dont know the whole story.... maybe it's because I've spent my whole life living something the polar opposite of all you."
He could no longer bear to look at them, he wanted nothing more than to keep his face concealed, "At first glance we all look the same. We all react to pain, laugh at funny things; eat when we're hungry, sleep when we're tired- but after basic human actions... thats where the line is drawn...."
He paused, "I.... I dont know anymore. I've been waiting years for this. I had hoped, and planned and imagined everything. But now it seems that everything I had ever thought was pointless, the life I'd lived for 28 years is nothing anymore. I dont even know what I'm saying anymore......"
Namine didn't understand why L had gotten so worked up. Turning her head to face him, she gestured for him to follow her as they reached the entrance to Gongaga Town.
"I'm sorry about that... everyone.. I, uhh... I'm just sorry..." Said L, slowly walking up to Namine and following her.
Cloud and Yuffie didn't seem phased by the words that attacked them. Namine, though surprised, stared up at the sky with a strange look on her face-- kind of hypnotized.
She took a few steps into the woods of Gongaga Town, slowly, and pointed to the sky with that zombified look on her face.
"Hm...?" Cloud furrowed his eyebrows as he looked up to the sky. Yuffie and Cloud were both shocked at what they spotted, and not long after seeing it they saw Namine running towards the source.
Something was creating massive amounts of smoke to rise into the air above Gongaga.
"Namine, don't--!!" Yuffie began, her and Cloud running towards the direction Namine sprinted off in.
Yuffie stopped momentarily, gesturing L to follow. "We have to stop her!"
L was confused again, "What's going on!?" He said, running after Yuffie.
Namine had ran ahead and lost Cloud and the group for a short time. The next thing they knew, they arrived at the old, run-down reactor. With that, Cloud looked up and saw a helicopter, carrying a pink dress away.
"... Damn it." he said, "Not this again..." he growled, gripping the hilt of his sword behind his back as Yuffie and L arrived after him.
"What happened-- where's Namine?" Yuffie asked.
Cloud growled at her, "ShinRa got her."
L stood still for a long moment. He sort of just turned his head away from the group and twitched, "That was not the conclusion I imagined...."
He then collapsed on to the ground and sghed, "Well I suddenly feel useless...."
