Chapter 5
Whats Wrong With Sayuri?
"Saa" Fuji whispered to himself as he watched Eiji lob the ball back to him. They were warming up as they waited for Tezuka to begin practice
But their captain was having a serious talk with his cousins and by their faces no one dared to confront them. Tezuka and Shoichi looked very serious which was normal for Tezuka but it was not in Shoichi’s nature. Sayuri seemed very sad and a tad bit angry. But she also seemed resigned to whatever it was that Tezuka and Shoichi were demanding. Within a few minutes Tezuka had the team gathered on the benches, Fuji made sure that he sat right next to Sayuri knowing that she was not feeling very well about the situation.
"Shoichi will be practicing with us for the rest of the season; he’ll be our back up." Tezuka said
"Naya! What about Sayuri-sempai" Momo called hearts in his eyes as he starred at the girl
Tezuka looked at his team seriously "Sayuri can practice with us every once in a while but I’m afraid that she cannot do it every time." He turned to his female cousin "Would you like to tell the why Imouto?"
"Hai…" she said softly and turned to the group "I have Hemophilia."
"W-what?" Takashi stuttered for the regulars
The group was stunned and was working over this new information
"Hemophilia: a group of hereditary genetic disorders that impair the body’s ability to control blood clotting or coagulation." Inui recited
"Nani?" Eiji asked looking as if what had been said went right over his head
"It means that if she gets a cut she won’t be able to stop bleeding and could die from blood loss." Oishi said softly
The seriousness hit Eiji like a rock and his face went completely white
"I’ve had it for a long time now." Sayuri said with a sad smile "My Father died of it when I was only a few years old and he passed it on to me."
"But I thought the chances of inheriting that were slim?" Takashi asked with a concerned look on his face
"They are," Inui replied "as a matter of fact it is rare to see a woman with hemophilia at all. The only explanation is that one of Sayuri’s ‘X’ chromosomes was mutated and the other was given to her by her father."
"Why would that be the only explanation?" Momo asked
"Because Shoichi doesn’t have the disorder," Inui said as if it was common sense "If Sayuri’s mother had been a hemophilia Carrier she would have passed on the chromosome to Shoichi, and their father would have passed on his own and Shoichi would have hemophilia as well."
Fuji wrapped an arm around Sayuri who seemed to be having a difficult time. She looked up startled but accepted the comfort with a thankful smile leaning against him slightly as if the gravity of the situation was pushing her down.
"Are there any warning signs?" Fuji asked his smile slightly grimmer than normal although he liked her leaning against him.
"Extreme nose bleeds." Inui stated pushing up his glasses "Intense menstrual cycle and some spotting."
The boys turned red and fell over at the last part
"Nya, Sempai, My virgin ears!" Eiji said
Inui, Oishi, Fuji and Tezuka seemed amused at their reactions but blushing as well.
"When did you get so immature? We learned this when you turn 10." Oishi laughed
The moment turned to humors but the problem was in their minds though they didn’t want to let it show for Sayuri’s sake.
