An awkward silence grew as Mimi and Jack stared at each other on the staircase landing. What could either of them say? It had been around three years since they had seen each other. And their last conversation had not been a pleasant one.

“I um so how are you Jack?” Mimi spoke nervously and didn’t look him in the eye. Throughout her entire life, she had not been able to look people in the eye. It always made her squirm. But through all of her Broadway training she had broken the habit until this very moment. Damn that Jack Barakat.

“I’m good.” Now Jack was just plain confused. The last time he saw her he thought it was going to be the last time he was ever going to see her. Part of him was ecstatic to be seeing her while the other half remembered everything that happened and wanted nothing to do with her.

“Good.” She still couldn’t look at him. However, she could look at her black boots very easily.

“Mimi what ar-“ Jack never got to finish his sentence.

“Oh crap I have to go up to um my apartment now. I mean its not that its not nice seeing you its just I have things to do and such like sleep and do other things so um.” She finally met his confused glance for only a moment. “I’m in apartment 7 if you want to talk later um.” She started walking up the stairs. Suddenly she stopped and turned back around to face him still standing there dumbfounded. “It’s nice to see you Jack.”

“It’s nice to see you too Mimi.” He was still in shock from actually seeing her. With those parting words she shot up the stairs and ran up to her apartment and as soon as she was in it she locked it.

“I am such a dumb butt.” Slowly she slide down her door until she was sitting on her hard wood floor.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. She had planned it out that she was going to become a Broadway star and live in a fabulous pent house apartment. She had both. Her final requirement was to never see anyone from Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland ever again. Especially Jack Barakat. But apparently she wasn’t allowed to have that wish granted.

In the immortal words of Carrie Bradshaw, women in New York City where always looking for three things. A fabulous apartment, a job or a man. But why is it that whenever they don’t have one of them the other two don’t even seem to matter. That was exactly what Mimi was contemplating while she sat on her wooden floor that was three floors above her first love.

-Meanwhile-

“Yo Jack stop standing there looking like a blow up doll and help us.” Alex pushed the frozen looking Jack so that he regained his senses. Right behind Alex was Mia. She was once of their merch girls and another friend who had stuck by them out of Maryland. Mia hated Mimi for many reasons. One for what happened and two well Mia didn’t like the same sex at all basically. Mia is not girl friendly. Jack knew that she had feelings for Alex and he constantly told her to forget him. He felt that he didn’t deserve her and she deserved better. The two of them rushed down the stairs past him.

“Mimi.” It was the only word Jack could muster up. The duo stopped dead in their tracks on the middle of the staircase.

“What about her?” Alex stared up at Jack confused.

“Apartment 7.” He pointed upwards stuttering.

“What do you mean apar” Mia stopped in mid sentence realizing what he meant. Anger flared up in her.

The three of them fell silent for a few minutes until a short brunette came running up the stairs between them. Little did they know that it was Maria running to see a distraught Mimi who had just called her in a panic.

“We can’t ignore her.” Alex was trying to find a solution and use his brain. It was surprising for him.

“Oh yes we can. You where there with us that night Alex and you know exactly what she did.” A glare was plastered on Mias face. She wanted to protect her boys at all costs. Especially if the terror she was protecting them from was Mimi Ashford.

“Mia.” Alex turned to her with a warning voice.

“No I will not let her come back after what she did as if everything is alright. It’s not fair to Jack for her to do this.” Mia felt like punching Alex at the moment. Well she felt like punching Alex almost every moment.

“She didn’t do anything yet all she did was say hi. She lived here first anyways.” Jack pushed past the two of them and began walking back down the stairs. At the moment he needed some fresh air or he was going to pass out. His heart was beating faster than it was supposed to and he couldn’t speak in complete sentences. It was just like when he first started falling in love with her but now he hated him self for feeling this way again.

-Back to Mimi-

“Sweetie let me in.” Maria knocked on her door loudly. As soon as she went to knock again the door flung open.

“Get in!” Mimi yanked her into her apartment so fast that she almost knocked her over.

“Woah woah woah ok so what was this catastrophic emergency that I had to leave a coffee shop full of beautiful men.” She threw her bag and coat down on top of Mimi’s piano. Mimi opened her mouth to talk but nothing came out. She started dramatically fanning herself.

“Mimi! Breath!” Maria grabbed her shoulders. Mimi stopped and took a deep breath in and out. “Now what is the problem?”

“All time low.” Mimi blurted out.

“What about them?” Maria shook her a bit.

“Living three floors down.” Mimi pointed down as Maria let her go.

“So that means Jack.” Mimi shook her head violently. Maria took a step back with her mouth wide open. Maria was the only one who knew Mimis side to the story and the strife she went through. Actually Maria and Mimi met in a restaurant only a few days after the incident.

“He caught me before I fell down the stairs and then it was oh hi Jack Barakat, boy who I was madly in love but then I left town and never spoke to you again, how has your life been?” Mimi threw herself down onto her couch.

“You need chocolate and wallowing movies.” Maria ran off to the kitchen, then to Mimi’s room. All the while leaving Mimi to talk to herself into her coach cushions.

“Ok up up.” She came back with cans of frosting, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and other random junk food.

“Nehhhh.” Mimi sat up and grabbed a can of frosting. “Can I move Maria?”

“You can’t afford it.” She walked up and turned the TV and the DVD player on.

“Well can I live with you again?” Mimi popped open the can.

“No.” Maria was quick to respond to that question.

“Can I make them move and then erase their memories of ever seeing me?” She ate a spoonful of frosting.

“No I don’t think you’re physic enough to do that.” She then proceeded to flop on the couch next to her and press play.

“It’s just.” Mimi set the frosting down. “They way he looked at me was a look of pure shock but I saw what the shock really was. Behind his eyes was still the same Jack that I left broken in Maryland. The same boy who I loved some much and when I told him I goodbye forever I didn’t even think to say I love you” The two of them sat there in silence as the menu for Breakfast at Tiffany’s came up on the TV.

“Mimi you can’t run from it anymore. Fate has led you two back together” Mimi cringed at Maria’s words.

“I just never though I was going to see him again.” Mimi leaned her head on Maria’s shoulder.

“I know. I will be here to support you through this. I supported you when it all began and I will support you when it finally becomes resolved. I just know if Jack loved you that much back then there is no why he could hate you completely now.” Maria patted her head and pressed play.

“But what do I do when he asks me why?”

“That’s up to you Mimi. You can tell him half of the truth but the whole truth well that is something that I don’t think you should share with him just yet.” Maria looked down at her concerned threw her emo glasses.

Mimi fell silent. The truth. If she had it her way, Jack Barakat was nevergoing to know the whole truth.
