The taxi ride back to his place took quite a bit less time than it had walking from there to my apartment building. Although it was a relief not walking, I still think I would have preferred it to the uncomfortable ride back to his mansion. The silence was deafening and the worst part of it was that I think he would have preferred it that way. There was just something about him that made me feel as if he wanted me to keep my mouth closed.

We arrived in front of the eerie house once more and exited our ride there. Jyrki reached my bags before I could even touch them and lifted them up without even the slightest bit of strain. He paid the taxi driver and started to head back inside while I trailed not too far behind.

He opened the door and let me into the dark, secluded elaborate foyer before getting in himself. He closed and locked the door behind him and then proceeded to walk up the stairs. I took the assumption that he wanted me to follow him up so I did so without a word.

I half recognized the upstairs hallway since I wandered it for a while looking for my exit last time I was here. I say half because I still couldn’t tell one hallway apart from the other. The bare walls held nothing that could distinguish one from the other, so I had a feeling I was going to get lost a lot here.

He led me into one of the bedrooms and dropped the bags down on the floor. The gesture made me assume that this was where I was to stay for a long time, so I had better like it. I took the opportunity to look around, since I hadn’t looked around much the first time I was here since I was too worried about where I was.

My assumption that this was the room Jyrki had set me in the first I had arrived was soon proved wrong as I looked over at the similar-looking vanity. The mirror here was perfectly fine and showed the same ghastly figure. I quickly looked away and looked at the large, king-size mahogany canopy bed. There were red sheer curtains around the whole bed, covering the silky crimson sheets that were neatly placed on the comfortable-looking mattress, topped with a thick down comforter.

There was a door all the way to my right, which I walked to and opened out of curiosity. It revealed a large bathroom that looked bigger than my whole apartment. It held a spotless white claw tub in the corner, a toilet and a sink, and even a separate shower stall. A mini vanity also stood to the side, complete with a little cushion seat.

I turned around to face Jyrki, who casually leaned against the doorframe watching me inspect everything. “I hope everything is to your liking?” he asked me as if he really wanted to make my stay here somewhat decent. “I was going to give you the room you first saw here, but the mirror is not yet fixed so this will have to do.”

“I don’t mind. It’s still an amazing room, especially compared to where I was living before,” I replied, trying to sound somewhat grateful for this horrible situation. Besides, I was way too exhausted from my eventful day to even consider arguing about anything. But I did have a feeling that I would find something to complain about tomorrow when I woke up. I always did find mistakes in everything. Even the things that were perfect.

“I guess I’ll leave you to unpack your things then. I’ll be back to check on you later tonight as I have some business to attend to. The only thing I ask of you is to stay in this room. At least just for tonight. I’ll go over which room you can and can’t go into tomorrow, understand?”

“Sure thing,” I replied as I walked over to my bag. I dragged the large, heavy thing over to the closet and opened up the door to reveal a large walk-in closet that could probably fit my wardrobe times ten.

“And try to resist breaking anything this time,” he grumbled, sounding annoyed at the fact that I had broken one of the sixty mirrors in this house. I rolled my eyes at the comment as he turned around and walked out of my room, closing the door behind him. I was surprised he didn’t lock me in. But then again, I wasn’t used to being trusted.

It hadn’t taken me long to unpack my things at all. But then again, I hadn’t brought too much to begin with. There weren’t many items I owned, and the items I did own were mostly junk that I decided not to bring along. All I needed was my makeup and accessories, and wardrobe full of clothes to wear in the nightlife of LA.

After I finished unpacking and checking out most of my new room, I went to lay down on the bed to relax for a bit and recap on the day’s events. Normal people usually came home to recap about their day at work: lots of paperwork, some juicy gossip, some office drama, etc. I, on the other hand, was recapping my time of almost being kidnapped and killed before a vampire came to my rescue and mutilated the man’s body.

I thought about the life I had given up tonight as well. My life of drug use, stripping, whoring around LA as if I were some type of Las Vegas prostitute… Those days were now over and I had to somehow get used to that. No more stripping for money, no more drugs for pleasure, and no more sex just because there was nothing better to do.

And the worst part of it was that I now had a housemate whom I didn’t know whatsoever. So far, the only thing I found out about my generous savior was that he was a vampire named Jyrki. He didn’t exactly publicize his life and he wasn’t the outgoing type so I knew damn near nothing about him. All I could figure out from his mysterious personality was that he preferred to keep his life in the dark. He was serious about almost everything. I saw him laugh about once throughout our time together, and that one time, I was sure he had faked it.

I got so bored with just lying that I had to find something to do. I was exhausted, but for some reason, I couldn’t find it in me to get to sleep. It most likely had to do with the new setting around me. Not only was I in a new place living a whole new life, but also I wasn’t even myself anymore. I was a new kind of creature, no longer human.

I got up from my position on the bed and started walking towards the door. I didn’t care what Jyrki said. If I wanted to go out there and explore my new home, then so be it. Besides, he did say he had some business to attend to so I doubted he would be here. I would have the whole mansion to myself. The only thing I really had to worry about was finding my way back to my room before he came back.

I exited the room and looked down both sides of the hallway before just picking one side and walking aimlessly down it. I finally found the long winding staircase I had come up from and went down again, prepared to explore the first floor foremost. All I had seen of it was the foyer and the dining room anyways. I was sure it had a few dozen more rooms than that though.

As I wandered from room to room, nothing stuck out to me. It was the same old Victorian/Medieval theme in every single room. Crimson red to a royal purple shone from every table, every mantelpiece. I remembered that he said he was only a vampire for a hundred years so I was curious as to where all this stuff came from.

After finishing off most of the ground floor, I moved up to the second story. I went down a hallway and realized that I had never been in this one before. Unfortunately for me, every time I tried to open a door, it was locked from the inside so I couldn’t get in. I had probably gotten through about seven doors when I just about decided to give up.

But that’s when something else caught my eye. At the very end of the hallway there was a large wooden door decorated elaborately with Victorian designs. I walked up to it and touched the door, tracing the intricately carved patterns. And then I heard something from the other side that made me jump slightly.

“Jyrki,” a female voice moaned quite loudly. I pursed my lips, trying my hardest not to let out a sound of disgust or a giggle. I then heard some groaning on Jyrki’s part as he mumbled something inaudible to the mystery girl. “It’s not like anyone can hear us, sweetheart,” she said back to him in a loud but seductive voice. “Now back to…this…”

I rolled my eyes at the sexuality that was practically seeping from under the door. So much for the “business” that he had to attend to. But then again, what was I to expect from him? He was a single, good-looking man in LA that just happened to be rich. Of course he got all the ladies. The only thing he was missing was the best one though: me. It wasn’t exactly jealously; it was more like the fact that he was missing out.

I turned around to leave since this was not amusing in any way, shape, or form. The last thing I wanted to do is spend my night listening to sexual moans and groans all night long. So I stepped away from the door and, to my horror, I stepped on a part of the floor that gave out a loud creak when my foot so much as touched it.

I closed my eyes and let out a sigh, as I knew that I was in deep shit now. A second later, I heard the door behind me creak open and then slam back shut again, causing me to jump slightly. I turned around to face a pissed-off looking Jyrki.

“What the fuck are you doing out of your bedroom?” he quietly hissed at me as he grabbed me painfully by the arm and started pulling me down the hallway towards my room. It was at this time where I despised the fact that vampires had excessive strength.

“I just wanted to look around,” I quietly replied back in a defensive tone.

“I told you I’d show you around tomorrow, didn’t I? Why was it so hard for you to follow my orders?”

“Because I don’t give a fuck! What the hell do you expect me to do until tomorrow?”

“How about what normal people do until the next day: sleep!”

“I believe you forgot that we’re not normal!” I relied angrily.

He stopped where he was and pulled me by the arm into the closest wall. He closed the gap between our bodies and his face was mere centimeters away from my own. “Listen up closely because I’m only warning you of this once. My hospitality ends at a certain point and you’re just barely keeping yourself from crossing the line. Now you will obey my orders from henceforth or I will throw you back out into the streets and wait for one of those crazy drug dealer’s men to kill you! Do you understand?”

I stared at him angrily for a while before I let out a frustrated sigh and looked away in defeat. There wasn’t really anything I could do at this point besides obey anyways. I didn’t exactly want to die, but I didn’t exactly want to live either. I just wished that things were back to the way they used to be.

He took me by the arm again and walked me to my room, opening it and practically throwing me in. He slammed it shut and then I heard something go through the keyhole. I knew he was locking me in as a precaution. I didn’t know why he would bother after that frightening threat though. After that, I don’t think I even wanted to be in the same presence as him.

I quickly changed out of my casual clothes into a tank top and short shorts before climbing in between the silk sheets and the down comforter. I had to admit that Jyrki had thought of nothing but comfort when he bought these things because it seemed as if my worries melted away just as I melted into the fabric. After pushing a lot of dreadful events out of my mind, I finally managed to drift off into sleep.
