I groaned as I woke up,stretching my soar limbs. I shivered when my legs came out from under the blanket, cold air washing over my exposed skin. I sighed as I sat up,rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
I got out of bed, stretching again to pop my back. I always slept in a curled up ball,so my body tended to get cramped.
I walked over to my laundry basket-I never put my clothes away- and pulled out a pair of black sweats. I pulled them over my boy shorts and walked out of my room, running my fingers through my messy, rainbow hair. I love my hair-not to sound too full of myself, but it was unique-very unique.
My hair was mainly blonde but the front of it was striped with natural-yes natural- colors, like blue, purple, pink, red. Like a rainbow-hence my name. Iris means colorful,or rainbow.
I looked out of the window as I walked to the kitchen,I could hear someone,Max most likely, rummaging around for food.
I loved our house. We were isolated on a mountain, safe from curious people who could find out about our secret. It was shaped like an E turned on it's side, and the view was amazing-mountain tops that the sun broke through in the morning, sending shadows all over the land.
We could live free up here-no cages,no rules,no grown ups. When we moved here,Jeb had been with us. He was like a dad to us,but two years ago he disappeared. None of us have our real parents so now we're alone-just the Flock.
There's Max,or course. She's the oldest and she keeps us in line, without being mean about it.
We don't go to school, but we learn from the Internet. But still,no school,no doctors,no social workers,or anything. The basic concept is-if no knows we're here,we stay alive, and we'd like to keep it that way.
I walked into the kitchen just as Gazzy asked Max-Ha! I was right- what was for breakfast.
"Um,it's a surprise,"she said, and I smiled. Max was not a cook by any stretch of the word. IT was obvious she had no idea what to make.
"I'll poor juice," Gazzy offered,as he got up to do so. He was a good kid. Him and Angel both were, and they were both brother and sister-the only ones by blood, but we were all family in a way.
"Mornin', Spaz," he said to me as he walked over to the fridge, noticing me for the first time that morning. Spaz was a nickname the boys tended to call me. It's because I'm hyper a lot,and they say my wings spaz out, because they move so fast-so yeah, that's the story behind that.
"Morning, Gazzy, Max," I said as I walked over to our beat up couch. I perched myself on the armrest and crossed my legs Indian style.
Not long after,Iggy slouched into the kitchen. With his eyes closed, he fell back onto the couch with perfect aim. He never really has problem being blind anymore, unless one of us decides to redecorate and move the furniture without him knowing.
"Hey, Ig, rise and shine," Max said.
"Bite me," he mumbled sleepily.
"Fine," she replied. "Miss breakfast."
"Mornin' Iggy." I piped, turning around to face him on my armrest-he'd lied down on the couch I was sitting on,I was talking to him if he was awake or not.
He grunted a reply and I sighed. I wanted to jump on him,to wake him up,but I wasn't in the mood to be yelled at.
"Will you quit that?" I heard Max say. Fang. I thought and turned my head to look. Yep.
"Quit what?" he asked calmly. "Breathing?"
"You know what." Iggy grunted and staggered upright.
"I'll make eggs," He announced. Isn't it strange that a blind guy can cook better then two girls who can see?
"Fang? You set the tables. I'll go get nudge and Angel." Max instructed. I was left to sit there and just watch everyone do their thing.
I poured more syrup on my eggs-yes on my eggs. I need sugar, tons and tons of sugar. We probably have more syrup and sugar than we do vegetables. Scratch that,we do have more syrup and sugar than vegetables.
"I want to go pic strawberries today. They're ripe now," Angel said as she was scooping up her scrambled eggs and looking at my plate with a strange look. My plate probably looked like a pool of brown goo with chunks in it,but God did it taste good.
"I'm in." I stated. "Strawberries are sweet, and I could use more sweets."
"You're practically drinking syrup and you need more sweets?" Iggy asked.
"Oh,don't act surprised," I said with a slight laugh. He smiled slightly in reply.
"Okay, Angel, I'll go with you," Gazzy said. Just then he let rip one of his unfortunate occurrences and giggled. Those occurrences are the reason he has his name.
"Oh, jeez, Gazzy," Max said with disapproval.
"Gas . . . mask!" Iggy choked, grabbing his neck and pretending to asphyxiate.
"I'm done," Fang said, getting up quickly and taking his plate to the sink.
"Sorry," Gazzy said automatically, but kept eating.
"Yeah,Angel," Nudge said. "I think the fresh air would do us all good. I'll go too."
"We'll all go," Max decided.
Outside,it was beautiful, with the first real heat of May. We carried buckets and baskets as Angel led us to a huge patch of wild strawberries.
"If you make cake," Angel, who was holing Max's hand, said," I can make strawberry shortcakes."
"Yeah, that'll be the day, when Max makes cake," I heard Iggy say beside me. I looked over in shocked humor, and saw his lips weren't moving. I grinned, trying to hold in me laughter."I'll make it, Angel." Iggy said.
Max whirled around. "Oh, thank you!" She exclaimed. "Okay,I'm not a fabulous cook, but I can still kick you're butt, and don't you forget it!"
Iggy was laughing and holding up his hands in denial. Nudge and I were trying really hard not to laugh, even Fang had a grin plastered on his face. The Gasman looked . . . mischievous.
"Was that you? Max asked, coming to realization. He grinned and shrugged trying not to look too triumphant. Iggy can mimic any sound or voice. Iggy and Fang had been very close to being hurt because of stuff Gazzy had said in their voices. It was a dark gift and he wielded it happily.
It was just another weird ability- most of us had some sort of one. Whatever they were- they made life interesting.
I saw Angel freeze beside Max and screamed. I jumped and looked at what she was looking at. In the next second, men with wolfish muzzles, huge canines, and reddish, glinting eyes dropped out of the sky like spiders.
