"No Please don't, it's not her fault," "You can't protect her forever," "but this really was my fault" "Wedon't care..." blackness and nothing but black.

Surine woke up in a sweat. That dream was back, Surine looked around her room. Nothing had changed in years, except one thing. Today she wasfinally16 and she was getting her lisence later that day.Surine got out of bed knowing that sleeping in was for deviants. It was the last day before the last day of school. This of course meant exams for everyone but the select few that were exempt, she had only one thing to thank for that "for once FCAT pays off." Surine got dressed in five minutes. She put on a pair of shorts and a regular t-shirt, flipped her hairwithout brushing it and ran downstairs for breakfast.Mrs.Lynn sat at the table by herself, she was eating waiting for her only daughter. Surine looked at her mother and mumbled something about toast before she grabbed a piece and ran to the bus stop. Mrs. Lynn screamed at her daughter something about a proper breakfast and how she was making life so dificult because she was completey antisocial, she was always running. It seemed like she was doing alot of running this morning, more than usual anyway. She wasn't lateor anythingbut she did want to keep her reputation of being fashionably early to everything. As far as the buswas concernedsheopenly couldn't wait until she got her lisence, of course a car wasn't in her future but herneighbor's car was. Little Kristen wouldn't be16 for another year andSurine had been promised free rides since she was 12. The yellow beast appeared a good twenty minutes after Surine had. She took her usual seat in the secondseat behind the driver, it had the least chance of making her vomit, andshe took out herdrawing book and began to scribble little doodles on a corner section. Then she heardthe sound of some one shouting trying to catch the bus, Surine looked out the window of the door. The boy was close but the driver wouldn't stop. She felt bad for himand pity wasn't something shedid often. Surine closed her book and threw her shoeat the dashboard,it scared the driver so suddenly that he stopped in a panic. The boy was rightthere and the driver had nochoice but to let him in. Surine nodded towards him to get her shoe and the boy grabbed it as he walked by. He handed it to heronly looking up at the driver's nasty look for a second, he looked like he was going to sit somewhere else but at the same time he looked lost. "Just sit here," Surine insisted. "Um, thanks. I mean what you did so the bus would stop. Not too many people would have done that," he said sitting next to her. Surine finishedputting on her shoe and was back to doodling on that corner, her feetup on her chair and her knees up to her chin. Her position looked uncomfortable, butit wasn't. "Actually no one on this bus would have bothered to stop the bus, butI was feeling good today because it's my birthday," She said not looking up one bit. "Well I'm glad it's you're birthday then," hereplied smiling. Surine looked up and the minuteshe saw that smile she closed her book right on her pencil. "So...how come I haven't seen you on the bus all year? I know you can't be a new student because school ends tommorrow." She said taking note of his dark blonde hair and tan skin. He looked like a total skater boy, not her type so shewasn't planning to flirt. "My brother was supposed to drive me but bailed this morning so he could move into his collage dormroom," the boy explained. Surine nodded "I'm Surine Lynn," she said introducing herself for the first time. "Jasper Sikes, Surine. That's some name, are you japanese or something?" Jasperasked and that was when she opened up her drawing book again. "No I'm not japanese, I just have a really pretty name," she stated doodlingon a page. Jasper looked a little hurt "sorry, I didn'tmean to offend you or anything," he said and Surine smiled. "It's alright, I was as foolish as you once," she said throughing him further intoconfusion. So insteadof thinking too much about it Jasper looked over Surine's shoulder at what she wasdrawing. It appeared to be a picture of abeheaded girl and a bunch of smiling ghouls with fangs, claws and dripping blood. "Wow, that's...that's amazing," Jasper commented. Surine sighed "creepy ain't it? I can't help it, I have a lot of nightmares and I draw what I see..." she trailed off. Was that weird? Typically they were. This is what Jessica warned her about. "Surine I know you don't really carewhat people think about of and whatever, but they think the things in your drawing books are weird so justdon't talk about them," she said flipping her long perfect brown hair over her shoulder. Everything about Jessica was perfect, yet Surine couldn't for thelife of her see why they were best friends. "Look I'm sorry if this disturbs you or whatever...." "No really I meant it when I said it was amazing, creepy or not. You are an amazing artist." he said as the bus came to a stop. "Anyway, Iguess I'll seeyou later," he commentedgetting up to leave. "Yeah sure," Surine added getting up to leave herself.
Later in the hallway, Surine was being abnormally quiet. Jessica was talking wildly while she opened her locker. "Jess, what can you tell me about Jasper Sikes?" Surine asked suddenly. Jessica looked ather as if Surine justgrew three heads."The JasperSikes? The same JasperSikes that pulled an ollie right over PrincipalLin's head last year? The same Jasper Sikes, whoseperfect brother Emmett Sikes dated everybeautifulgirl in this school but me?" Jessica started to freak out. "What? Is he like a big deal or something?" Surine asked and Jessica gasped "only the biggest deal ever, but why did you ask. I mean he's totally not your type" Jessicaasked turning to go to lunch with her friend. "Ohh no reason really, he just sat next to me on the bus today," Surine stated. "Noway! Jasper Sikes, the cutest, most popular boy in schoolsatnext to you on the bus today." Jessica practically screameddown the hallway. Everyone looked their way. "Jess, shut your mouth" Surine snapped in ahushed voice. "It's not like I knew what a big deal he was, he was running to catch the bus so I made the bus driver stop..." "Noway, what happened" "Well I threw my shoe at the..." "No I mean what did you twotalk about" Jessica insisted. Surine sighed "we didn't talk about much, about my drawings and stuff. He said I was a good artist" Jessica squealed at the end ofSurine's sentence. "It's like fate, now the next time you see him you can introduce me," Jessica declared. "Ohh don't be ridiculous, I'm never going to see him again," Surine insisted walking past Jessica to the art room where she usually spent her lunch period. "Ohh no, I don't think so.We're going to the cafeteriatoday" Jessica said grabbing Surine's arm and pulling her away. "The lunch room? But I've never been there," Surine said and Jessica smiled. "Well it is almost the end of theyear, you have to see it sometime," "How about next year?" Surine said trying to get away, but Jessica's grip was firm for her size. Jessicadragged Surine into the cafeteria,Jessica smiled but Surine honestly looked terrified. Just like Jessica wanted Jasper was in the cafeteria sitting on a tabletop with a huge groupof friends. He looked up and saw her, "HeySurine, over here"he called for her and Jessica pushed the tan-skinned girl towards the group. "Hi," she said quietly. She never needed to talk to so many people at once. Surine wasn't soft spoken really, but she didn't really like people. "So this is the artist you sat next to on the bus?" a girl with long blonde hair andtoo much make-up. Surine remembered her from elementary school. "Don'tact any stupider than you actually are Rachel, you know exactly who I am. By the way Jasper this is my friend Jessica, if that's all Jess I'd really like togo now," Surine said walking away. Jasper grabbed her before she went too far. "Hey Surine, meet me at the bus stop later I have a surprise for you," Jasper said smiling finallyletting Surine go. Rachelfrowned "There's something really odd about that girl, and did you see the way she insulted me?" She commented. Another boy laughed "it's about time someone gave you a little shook up Rach," he said. "I don't know, she's kind of cute." Jasper mentioned. "Don't be ridiculous, she's not your type"another girl said. "Seriously, she's really not," Jessica said, she never left, Jasper gave her an odd look. "Well I should know because I've been her friend for years, she has nightmares and family problems. Have you seen her drawings? obviously we are dealing with a seriously disturbed child." Jessica commented. Jasper smiled "yeah I've seen her pictures and I think that her kind of expression is just what the world needs, she's not disturbed...just misunderstood is all," he said as if he knew everything. Jessica shook her head, she wouldn't beleive it.
