Sinful Secrets
Chapter 2 : Chapter 2
The whole day Cassie felt like she had been stuck at the back of a
crowded elevator, with greenish-brown mold on the walls, cockroaches at her
feet, and the ever too familiar stench that immediately told you that someone
had missed a spot. As she stepped out of the building her chest loosened and
her muscles relaxed at the cool summer breeze moving in from the north. For a
few minutes she just stood there basking in the sun's light as it shone on her pale
face. She waited as the wind swept her honey-brown hair away from her face
and ruffled her shirt around so that it pulsated against her chest.
Cassie was calm now. Finally, after weeks of desperation and
anxiety, she felt at ease. When the wind stopped, she closed her eyes for a
moment, intaking the warmth and feeling it throughout her entire body.
Suddenly, the wind picked up again, only this time in the opposite direction. So
now her hair was being whipped into her face, leaving tangles in her hair that she
knew would take forever to undo. The tall girl opened her eyes and just stared
off into the street, watching as her classmates hurridly made their way home.
The yellow in her eyes was starting to dominate the seafoam green color around
her pupils, and knew if she didn't get home soon, she would get another
migrane.
Cassie did a prerequisite rubbing of her temples and then sighed as
she made her way down the concrete steps. She made her way down the road
mindlessly, not paying attention and just letting her feet carry her the way home.
Halfway to her house, Cassie pulled out her ipod and put the songs set to her
"favorites" playlist. The first song played, drummed in her head and she picked
up her pace to match the beat. It wasn't until the second verse had ended that
she began to sing.
"I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I'm the face that you have to face
Mirrored in your stare
I'm what's left, I'm what's right
I'm the enemy
I'm the hand that will take you down
Bring you to your knees"
Cassie paused the song after she sang that phrase, and shuddered at the
completely obvious similarities between it and whoever the killer was. She
immediately took off the hold button and pressed next. The song,"Tear You
Apart" by She Wants Revenge came on, and Cassie grunted, pressing next
again. This time, "Paralyzer" by Finger Eleven played and she smiled. It was one
of her all time favorite songs. She immediately sang along, as she remembered
how many times her and Shannon voted to get the video to number one on
TRL. She let out a sad laugh, being reminded of Shannon.
Without even looking up, she could tell by the patterns in the
speckled sidewalk that she was just outside her house. By then she was listening
to the All Time Low version of "Umbrella". Cassie had always thought that this
version completely beat the original. She laughed at the fact that she had listened
to this version so much, that she forgot how the original Rihanna version
sounded. She sang out loud, belting each note into oblivion, and danced in
circles as she made her way towards her door. When she reached for the
golden handle, the door opened. Cassie was then greeted by a tall, athletically
built, 18 year old boy with wonder dimples that were beautifully placed on his
cherubic-looking face. It took her a minute to realize who was standing in front
of her. She examined his straight dark-brown hair, his build, and then his eyes.
Those of which totally gave it away. It was Trace.
Her eyes began to water and well up with tears as she staggered.
Her words fumbled out like tripping feet on a floating log. Trace just smiled at
her, and picked her up in a giant bone-crushing bear hug. She didn't mind.
Trace and Cassie had been separated for a year now, after he was accepted
into the foreign exchange program to study abroad in London. They weren't
together, but were the best of friends. The two usually spent everyday possible
together, and stayed on the phone until Trace's mom came in and yelled at him
to stop filling up the phone bill. His mom always figured that the two would get
married, but they were both convinced that they were too good of friends to go
that far. Although, they both secretly thought about it.
For a good 5 minutes, they just looked at eachother, finding things
that had changed. Trace spent a lot of time looking at Cassie's face. He loved
the way her eyes and hair looked in contrast to her pale skin. She just looked
so angelic and pure. He also noticed that she lost a considerable amount of
weight. He frowned at this. She was already skinny enough before. He
wondered what happened to make her look so melancholy. Cassie's face had a
hint of sadness in it. Her eyelids looked heavy and there were dark circles
around her eyes, as if she hadn't been sleeping. Trace furrowed his eyebrows
and finally asked," What happened?"
