-BEEP-BEEP-BUZZ-
I rolled onto my side, [Mutant bunnies?] I asked myself. I rolled onto my feet being careful not move to quickly, so that the cut’s didn’t start bleeding again. I dressed in black slacks, and a long sleeved navy tee, throwing on my black jacket with purple, and blue swirling designs. I brushed through my hair before braiding it loosely on each side of my head. [Hm, I kinda look like Tuesday- (Tuesday from the Adam’s Family)- a Tuesday with more modern clothes.] I grabbed my bag before slinking downstairs.
I hurriedly made my Uncle his breakfast shoving the leftovers in my face. [Man was I hungry.] I had just set his plate down when Jamison came through the kitchen door. He staggered from side to side as he walked practically falling down. He must have had a lot to drink last night if he’s wobbling like this. Granted, my uncle’s a drunk but he’s a normal drunk. Meaning he could down a case of beer and be fine, not showing any signs except for his breath and slightly slurred speech. Minus the fact that the more he drinks the easier it is to anger him.
I was hoping I could get off this morning without a beating, but- who knows. I watched him eat, mumbling to himself. He seemed to be sobering up- a tiny little bit.
“Anabelllllle, tonigh’ my friens ar comin over. You ge her’-hic- righ after schoolll. And you better-hic-not be late.” He growled starting to come out of it. I nodded inching my way out the door, when Uncle Jamison got up, racing up to me hitting me across my face, luckily, it wasn’t the same side that he had hit me with the bottle on. “I hate you.” He stated.
I quickly took my leave, bound for school.
Deep down I was terrified, coming “home” would mean trying to fight off my uncle’s friends. I was able to get away last time, but this time, I might not be so lucky. I wasn’t paying any attention to the faces that looked at me funny when I passed, or the whispering behind my back-literally. Fortunately there wasn’t writing on my locker so I was able to grab my things and be on my merry way.
I got to my English class to find it locked. I walked across the hall, waiting for Ms. Jelk to come and open the door. I was losing concentration when I heard a bell go off. Realizing I must have spaced out, I stepped into the class.
It was Pre-Cal. time again as I quickly took my seat waiting for class to start. [Why am I always waiting?] I asked myself before I noticed a tall figure hovering over me, casting a shadow over my desk. I looked up to see if it was intentional, maybe it was Barbie, I mean who else could it be.
I rolled my eyes upon seeing Damien. I expected him to say something like. ‘What not happy to see me?’ but instead he asked.
“What happened to your face?” I was totally taken aback. For the longest time I hadn’t had to deal with anyone asking about my injuries.
“I-I uh, I fell.” I lied. [Way to go!] I chastised myself.
“You fell?” Damien asked critically.
“The ground has gotten a lot harder lately, haven’t you noticed?”
“No, I guess I haven’t.” He answered solemnly. I could tell he didn’t buy my story, but I also knew that he didn’t know what happened to me either.
Everything was going great until P.E. – Okay, that was a lie, the whole day stunk! Damien even bought me a lunch and made sure I ate it. See I’m not anti-eating but it’s the fact that he thinks I’m so pathetic that he had to buy my lunch. And in chemistry, well, I was lucky that I was smooth enough to talk my way out of a detention. I could not afford to get a detention- not today.
I arrived to P.E. late and rushing into my uniform to find that today we have to do outdoor sports like scaling the rock wall, climbing rope, or going through the agility course. [Okay, don’t freak you only have to pick two.] I thought. [Let’s see the rock wall is probably my best bet, and then maybe the rope? Ah hell, who am I kidding this s*cks!] I sighed aggravatedly. [Anyone of those things could aggravate my wounds and reopen them.] My brain was racking itself for some kind of disease I could have recently accumulated, when I felt a hand come down lightly on my shoulder.
I skittered away flinching, waiting for the residual impact to strike me down but instead a hand cupped my face up to look at Damien.
“What’s wrong?” His eyes concerned.
“N-Nothing you just startled me is all.” I answered, forcing a smile upon my lips.
“Oh,” he said. “So which are you going to do?” he asked. Looking over all the choices.
“Uhm, I don’t know. What do you think you want to do?” I asked.
“I want to try them all.” I nodded in impressment.
“If you think you can.” I shrugged. He smirked down towards me.
“I know I can.” He responded I rolled my eyes before our names were called.
“Alright, Damien,” Coach started. “Which ones will you try your skills at?” The coach asked.
“I’ll give all of them a try.” He responded calmly. The coach gave him an incredulous look.
“Alright, lets see what you can do.” The coach responded. The whole P.E. class came over by the rock wall, watching. Damien got suited up and approached the wall. He grabbed a grip with his right and left hands. I had a fleeting thought- [What if he can’t do it? What if he slips?] Then I got a glimpse of his toned and slightly muscled form and that thought just slipped away.
Damien waited for the coach to give him the ok before pulling himself up. I watched with a certain curiousity, it seemed as if Damien were weightless atmosphere- like an astronaught in space. It seemed as if he leapt from hold to hold with elegance and speed. And for some reason if felt like he was holding back. Like he wasn’t going as fast as he could. Also his legs didn’t seem to wobble as he went up like mine always did, also he wasn’t breathing hard, in fact it didn’t seem like he was breathing at all. [He-he has to be breathing-don’t be stupid Anabelle.] I scolded myself.
Even as Damien came down he seemed to glide. [That boy is strange.] I told myself. It was easy to see that everyone was impressed. Next was the rope hanging from the top of the gym ceiling. Damien took the rope in his hands easing himself up before gliding easily up the rope without breaking a sweat, seeming to come down just as easy. The agility course Damien just flew right threw. Everyone was impressed, the girls were all over him, the guys were high fiving him.
I on the other hand was off by the rock wall trying to not fail gym-Yes, you heard me, if I don’t complete at least one of these activities I fail, and I only have ten minutes left of class. Every time I reached for a handhold my stomach ached and felt like it was ripping. But I made it to the top, eventually. I paused at the top for a quick breather, I placed my hand over my stomach. My eyes widened. [Ah f*ck!] Blood was slowly seeping through my shirt. I looked around to see what everyone was doing and how good my chances were of running straight into the bathroom and hiding out until I had to run home.
I saw Damien’s eyes right on me with a darker tinge to them. Thankfully he was all the way across the room when I started my descent. Once my feet touched the floor I ripped off the harness and bolted for the girl’s bathroom. Damien was still fighting off the girls who had clung to him. I held the door shut for a moment before quickly changing into my other clothes. I took all my stuff and hid in one of the stalls.
-DING-…-…DING….-…DING-
I waited a few moments as feet thundered inside, then they ushered out. I stepped out of the stall and then the locker room, not even bothering to get any books from my locker. Running as fast as I could hoping not too run into Damien. I was rounding that corner outside of school when I noticed a group of people straight ahead. I had no choice but to barrel through. But after another step the group cleared out and my heart sank as I passed a pair of emerald eyes. Something cold tightened around my wrist yanking me back.
