Two [Shane Told] I Would Wait Forever
Chapter 3 : Three [Shane Told] I Would Wait Forever
The only thing I'd done to my room so far besides pack it with boxes was hang my calendar on the wall. It's a ritual of mine, I suppose, to make sure I check off every day as it passes me by. So following my habitual pattern, I marked an 'X' from corner to corner of the square that represented the 20th of July. School was scheduled to start on September 1st, and my birthday was to take place on September 2nd.
As I entered the kitchen I crossed my mother making an attempt at pancakes.
"Oh, good morning sweetie. I was hoping to get these finished before you and Matt were up as a nice surprise. I guess you're just too fast for me!" She had a huge smile plastered to her face that just seemed so phony to me, like her and I were the best of pals.
"That's great mom, but neither of us ever eat breakfast."
"Nonsense. Since when?"
"Um, since ever mom." I had to actually get into a box, dig out a glass, unwrap it from its protective layer of newspaper, and rinse it out before getting orange juice from the fridge. Hopefully she'd start putting things away today.
"You know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day."
"Yep, that's what they say,"I finalized, a poor excuse for a closing, as I left her standing alone with the blackening pancakes.
"Matt! Big brother!" I went into my sleeping sibling's room without permission to enter and did my best to coax him out of bed.
"What time is it?" His voice was muffled from underneath the pillow that hid his face from the rising sun.
"Time for you to get up! I need you to go to the school with me to get registration papers."
"Have mom take you."
"Nahh, she's acting weird this morning. She's out there making breakfast!"
It was then that he removed the pillow from his head and sat up, yawning. I handed him the OJ and left him to get ready and so I could as well.
Sifting through my things I recovered a clean outfit and toothbrush and makeup. I moved quickly because I knew Matt had only to throw on a pair of jeans before he was ready to go.
We left after briefing our mother of our objective. As we walked the Court, making our way out to the main road, a boy--the boy from yesterday--passed us. He was thin and had brown hair, not long but on its way, and big bright eyes that would have captivated me had I not looked away before he could catch my wandering eyes. I considered saying hello to him but thought better of it; he hadn't seemed to fond to meet me the day before.
"You know that kid?" Matt asked once the boy was past us.
"No, why?"
"I don't know, he was just looking at you like he knew you form some place."
"He was at the pool with his girlfriend yesterday when I went, but that's it."
"Ohh he's got a girl, what a downer huh?" he said with an accusing grin. I just laughed.
"Not at all. He seems rude. I'm not interested," I answered truthfully.
"Eh, no biggy. There's going to be so many people at the new school, there's bound to be one person that can like even you."
"Hey shut up! I don't see you witha significant other."
"Yeah well once school starts the chicks will be lining up for me." Him and I always wore the biggest smiles when around each other.
"Please," I snorted. "Is your ego big enough?"
We continued to joke around as we walked, the day already half-over and summer going by way too fast.
