The next month was splendid but Elizabeth hated the pampering and extra attention from James and Caleb. She hadn’t seen Lacey for quite sometime and was beginning to wonder about her mother-in-law. When ever she asked about her the subject was quickly changed or she was assured she was fine just on a little vacation, so she thought everything was fine. James and Caleb bought her gift after gift, but the gifts were bought to keep her occupied doing little, non-stressing things. James had bought her a computer, clothes that fit momentarily and a few other things, but the one thing he got her that she loved the most was a small gray kitten named Salem. She adored the kitten, it was spoiled instantly, it slept in the bed with her and James, always had a bowl of milk and always had someone to play with whether it was her, James or Caleb. It even tried to fend off James in jealously when he tried to hug her whenever she held the kitten. Caleb had bought her a new desk for her computer along with a comfortable computer chair that was black and fluffy. He had helped James hook up the computer and they both fought the entire time, arguing that this wire goes there not there and such. It was rather entertaining to her but whenever they heard her laugh or giggle at them, they would quit arguing and go back to hooking up the computer. After they hooked up the computer they both insisted they paint the room because the green color on the walls made her queezy. It took them about a day to paint the awful green and turn it into a beautiful dark blue. When she was looking at her new room, she gasped as she felt a good swift kick in her belly. Her hand flew to that spot instinctively. James and Caleb heard her gasp and saw her hand move from her hip to her belly and they were both in sudden alarm going crazy yelling and shouting “It’s time, it’s time.” James had rushed over , picked her up and put her in the bed fussing over her as well as Caleb. “James. Caleb.” Seeing that saying their names calmly didn’t work, she raised her voice, “All right! Look, it’s nothing, it’s not time either. It was just another kick that hurt. You two are very edgy around me so calm down.” ‘With the way your always being kicked it should be any day now huh? I wouldn’t even be surprised if you’re carrying twins. The kicking keeps me up at night when ever I can feel your belly against me whenever you’re asleep.” James kissed her on the forehead with a smile in relief that it wasn’t time. He wasn’t ready for all of that just yet. Relief didn’t last long though. There came a knock at the door and Caleb opened it when James nodded an ok, there was a nurse at the door. “You’re majesties, it’s the queen. We must hurry, there’s not much time. Come on.” She grabbed Caleb’s hand was began pulling him. Before he was out of the room he managed to say, “Come on James, now! Bring Elizabeth too!” James wasted no time, scooping Elizabeth up in his arms, carrying her out the door catching up with Caleb and the frantic nurse. “James what is going on? What’s wrong with Lacey?!” He didn’t say anything, he couldn’t knowing that Lacey was the mother she never had. They reached Lacey’s room and went right in to a dark room with candles as the only light. The sight of Lacey in the bed saddened Elizabeth seeing her once blonde hair now white as snow, flawless skin now wrinkled with sudden age and the twinkle no longer visible in her gray eyes. James placed her in a chair beside Lacey’s bed and just held Lacey’s almost lifeless hand. She know knew what was happening. James and Caleb were talking to the doctor and she could faintly hear the words that were being exchanged. The only words she heard were “She only has a few moments left.”
