The Mystery Behind Her Green Eyes
Chapter 3 : The Mystery Behind Her Green Eyes
After a few hours of reading,I was just coming up for air when our doorbell rang. It was one of those long ringing tunes, and I was curious who would be coming to our house at-I glanced at the grandfather clock beside the fireplace- 3:45. I didn't order pizza, did I?
I walked quickly through the hallways, hoping that whoever it was wouldn't think nobody was home and just leave.
"Just a second," I yelled from the front hall. Exasperated,I opened the door to find a guy wearing a greasy looking hat that said "Pizza Hut" and a wrinkled tee shirt and jeans to match. Hishairwas amessy brownmop and when he looked up at me I blushed, for his eyes were of such a piercing blue it was like they were penetrating right through me, seeing all my secrets.
"Here's your order: Sweet and Sour chicken and egg drop soup," he saidwith more of a duty than enthusiasm.
"But.. I didn't even order anything.." I looked at him, waiting for him to pull out some list of orders or something. When he didn't, I sighed and said, "How much?"
"That'll be $15.60 total," he said writing something on the receipt asI handed him a $20. He smiledwith aseemingly innocentgleam in his eyeas he handed me myfood. "See you around,"he replied. And with that,he turned on his heel and left.
I gave one more confused lookat the car then closed the door behind me.When I thought of him the word that popped immediately was-Yummy..Indeed.Suddenly I was the one smiling in that secret way, and whenI turned the stereo really loud, I felt a silly fill of giddyasI sat at one of the bar stools in the kitchen. Laughing at myself,I looked at the note inquisitively. It read:
690-556-9256
Ryan- call me
"Hmm... maybe.. not."
Guys were always sending girls notes like this, and even if it was appealing, I knew not to think anything of it. It's all driven by hormones, and there's aplenty of them already. God, was he hot though. I decided I should tell my girls this news, and see what they thought. What's the point of having a mystery guy come to your door and bring you chinese food when you hadn't ordered it if you can't tell your friends all about it?
I signed on instant messanger, and saw thattwo of my friends were on.
Justlistening: Hey guys what's up?
Damienishot: OMG! KAYLN!! Are you okay?? We heard what happened, everyone's talking about it.
Justlistening: Really? Oh you know, I needed some air, and english seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Damienishot: Say no more. So what else is happening?
Greenfreakmachine: Hey hey! OMG KAYLN!! i'm so sorry!! I heard all about what happened! Do you need a girl's night? I can come over if you want!
Justlistening: Hey Nicole! Well.. i do have alot to tell you guys, and with us not being in the same grade and all i never do get to see you.. I'm here all by my lonesome *puts on innocent face*
Damienishot: Gurl! All you had to do was ask
Justlistening: Thanks guys! See you in a few!
Greenfreakmachine: Okay see u
OnceI signed off,I decided to slip into my pj's before the girls got here. The only times we got to hang out was at lunch, afterschool, and the weekends.
It's not like I didn't try to have friends in my own grade, but since the age gap was always a barrier, it was naturally easier to hang out with the kids my own age.
Pondering whether I should try harder to make friends closer to my own grade level, I was interrupted by thethe doorbell.. again. I rushed out my bedroom after grabbing a big bag of chips and a huge bottle of gingerale from the kitchen.
"Hey!"Brianna immediately pulled me intoone of herworld-famoushuge bear hugs.
"Hey! I've got amo,"I said holding up the chips and soda.
"Great! I brought chocolated covered bananas,I know how much you love them."
"OHH! YUMMY!!" I squealed, impatiently inviting her inside.
"This place just seems to get bigger and bigger everytimeI come over."She commented, doing an exaggerative spin around the marble floored room. The front foyer was prettyimposing with the wooden staircase curving around the room and theglass chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
Irolled my eyes at her; shewasalways making me feeluncomfortable about theamount of money mydad and I were fortunate enough toown."Ya well-" I was cut off by, guess what, the doorbell.
Being in the front hall still,I opened the front door before the doorbell finished ringing. "Hey!! Glad you could come!"
"Omg, Kayln, you have so much to tell us! First off, why are you home alone on a friday night and-"
"Whoa whoa, ifI was alone, then who was with you?"
She stuttered for a second, obviously caught off guard."I..."
"Uhuh, that's just whatI thought. Come on in! Dad left me enough food for the weekend and more I'm guessing. And I'm home alone because... he um.. he had a business trip or something."
Both of them raised their eyebrows but didn't questionme any further, much tomy relief.
After watching a few romantic comedies and filling themselveswith candy,I told mytwo favorite people in the world about the chinese guy and askedwhatI should do about him. They saidI should call him for the heck of it, and see if he turned out to be a good or badegg, for you never know until you've tried a guy out.
"I mean girl, if he's really a jerk, just drop him! You've got the looks to get the hottest senior, if you tried." I blushed a deep crimson at that, but she and Nicole were smiling all the same.
"See! You know it's true! Why don't you go after him?"
I thought about it, and really, it might be nice to give into the whole 'teenage relationship' crap. It's also highly possible that I would regret even calling him back. But what is life if you don't take any leaps?
With a sigh I slowly said, "I guess. I mean, why not?"
"YAY!" They squealed in unison. Then we all broke out in laughter, one of those uncontrollable laughing fits where you'rehowling and rocking back and forth untilyoucan't breath, rolling around like rolly pollys.
