How My Heart Behaves -One- Kevin Jonas

The next couple of days were good. I started going back to school. I spent some time with Jules and I started to tutor Nick in math.

“So when you take this to the other side… x equals 12?” Nick asked scratching his head with his pencil

“You got it man” I said smiling

“I think I actually understand” he said leaning back into his chair.

“Alright” I said cracking a huge smile

“Melissa, I need some advice”

“Well, I’ll try to help”

“See, there’s this girl that I know, Lucy… and uh we’ve gone on a couple dates… and I want her to be my girlfriend… how do I go about that?”

“Well of course you say in your manliest voice ‘hey baby, wanna go steady?’ and then you flex… that’ll get a girl every time” I said smiling and nodding.

“I don’t know why I asked you this” He said rolling his eyes shaking his head

“I’m kidding… just... ask her”

“What if she says no?”

“You’re a great guy Nick… plus you play guitar in a band, it doesn’t get any better in a girl’s point of view”

“Alright”

“You should do it now”

“What?”

“Call her… do it now; I’ll be here for moral support”

“Umm…” he said taking a deep breath “Alright… but don’t make any faces, kissing noises, don’t go get my brothers, and don’t leave until I say you can… I might mess it up if you aren’t here”

“Got it… now call!” I said handing him his phone. He dialed some numbers and put it up to his ear.

“Hey, it’s Nick… oh not much, I just figured out algebra… yeah Melissa helps me… Umm, she’s just leaving now” He said shooting me a look that said ‘don’t leave’ I nodded to him “I guess? Yeah she’s pretty, no I wouldn’t say prettier than you… umm I called for a reason and I’m just gonna go ahead and say it… I like you a lot, a lot a lot… and I was wondering if maybe you would be my girlfriend?” I could hear the squeals through the speaker and started to laugh.

“I’m gonna go” I mouthed to Nick while pointing at the door; I gave him a thumbs up and left the room. I was waking to the door when Denise met me in the hall. She handed me a 20 dollar bill.

“For Nick’s tutoring”

“You don’t need to pay me… I’m happy to do it, I like math”

“No, no, no, I insist” She said taking my hand and putting the money in it.

“Um, thanks” I said putting the money in my pocket.

“How come you never pay me when I help him with English?” Kevin said walking up behind his mother

“Because, I’m you’re mother, if I don’t feel like paying you I won’t… plus I like Melissa more than you” she said leaving. Kevin’s jaw hung open. I started to laugh

“I can’t believe my own mother likes you more than me” he said shocked

“Well, come on… what’s not to like?” I said shrugging. Kevin took a step back and looked at me.

“You’re right… you are perfect”

“So true” I said smirking

“Do you wanna go grab a coffee?”

“Yeah sure… I’ll drive” I said patting my pocket, “Shoot, I left my keys in Nick’s room… be right back” I ran up the stairs to Nicks room. I knocked twice and Nick answered the door; he was still talking on the phone.

“Hang on a sec” he said in the phone

“I forgot my keys” I said grabbing them off his desk

“Hey, Melissa?”

“Yes sir?”

“How do you feel about you and Kevin maybe going on a date with me and Lucy?”

“Well… I don’t see why not… I’ll ask Kevin” I said leaving Nick’s room.

“Got ‘em” I said dangling my keys “Hey, how do you feel about going on a date with Nick?”

“Uh, dating my brother? Well, he’s a nice guy, but his hair’s a little too bushy for me” He said as we walked out to the car

“That’s not what I meant” I said hitting Kevin on the arm, as I turned on the car “He wants you and me to double date with him and his girlfriend”

“Nick has a girlfriend?”

“Yeah… he said her name is Lucy”

“Interesting”

“Quite, so… are we going?”

“Sure… it could be fun” Kevin said evilly

“We are NOT embarrassing Nick… you need to be nice”

“Fine, take all the fun out of being a big brother”

“Maybe I will”

“Do you have any siblings?”

“I have four older brothers”

“That’s cool… older brothers are the best” Kevin said cockily

“Sort of… I haven’t spoken to any of them for years”

“Yeah… about that… what’s the deal with you and your family?”

“There’s no deal… I just don’t talk to them”

“You don’t just stop talking to family without a reason”

“Well there’s a reason… I just don’t like to talk about it”

“Alright” Kevin said, he wouldn’t pry because he knew that I’m too stubborn to just tell him. After a bit of silence we got to Starbucks.

“I got this” I said to Kevin “I’ll use the ’I like you more than my own son’ money your mom gave me” I said grinning. Kevin playfully glared at me. I made a face at him and got the coffees. We took them to go because we had to find out that night’s details from Nick. In the car Kevin kept looking over at me.

“Hey Melissa?”

“Yes?”

“Do you wanna go steady?” He said in a really deep voice then he flexed at me.

“Were you eavesdropping on me and Nick” I said in mock disgust

“I was walking by when you said it” Kevin said in his defense

“Alright… well, was that a real question, or were you just being a jerk?” I asked glancing over at him.

“Can it be a little of both?”

“I guess”

“Well it is”

“So do you want an answer?”

“If you have one”

“Yes… times two… yes I have an answer and the answer is yes”

“Sweet” Kevin said as he took a drink of his coffee. This was the best thing ever. It was so comfortable; it was like we were just making sure of something that was already there… It didn’t change anything. We got his house and we went inside. We saw Nick sitting in the living room watching TV with Joe. I sat on the couch and Kevin sat beside me.

“Where were you two?” Joe said without looking away from the TV

“Coffee run” I said, Joe’s head shot up

“Without me?”

“You can have a sip of mine if it makes you feel better” I said in a patronizing voice. Joe grabbed my coffee

“For being mean I’m taking the whole thing” he said sticking his tongue out at me

“Alright man” I said as he took a huge drink. His face scrunched up and he shut his eyes. He passed the coffee back to me.

“That’s disgusting… I don’t know how you can drink that” He wiping his tongue off with his sleeve

“You are such a baby” I said taking a drink, “So Nick… Give me the details on tonight”

“Well, I figured we’d go to the movies and out to eat… but that’s open for change”

“No, that sounds good… What time?”

“I told Lucy we’d pick her up around 5:30” I looked at my watch

“And it’s 3 now… I should get home; I have some stuff to do before we go out” I said patting Kevin’s leg and standing up. “I’ll see you guys later”

“Later” said Nick

“Why am I not invited?” Whined Joe

“Is your name Lucy?”

“No”

“That’s why”

“But you’re going… and so is Kevin”

“Are you getting to a point?”

“Yeah… that’s totally unfair”

“That’s life… it’s a lesson you should learn while you’re still young” I said patting him on the face. He stuck his tongue out at me.

“Bye Joe” I said happily

“Whatever” Joe grumbled. I laughed at him

“See yah tonight Kev”

“Yeah, see yah” he said.

I drove to my apartment. I took a shower and got dressed. I put on some bronzer, brown eyeliner and mascara. I straightened my bangs and put my hair in a ponytail. I went over to Jules’

“Hey Liss!” she said opening her door.

“Do you want to rent some movies tonight? I’m not gonna be home to watch them with you, but I’ll go with you to rent them”

“Yeah” She said excitedly while pulling on her shoes “I’ll be right back mom, Melissa is taking me to the video store!” she yelled into the apartment. I scratched a note on the back of a receipt that I found in my purse it said

Kevin, If I’m not home when you get here, hang on… I’m just at the video store with Jules, I’ll be back in like thirty seconds!

I put it on my door and went with Jules. We got to the video store and she got a couple Barbie movies. I brought her back and I saw Kevin standing outside my door.

“How long were you waiting?”

“Not even thirty seconds” He said smiling

“Good”

“You look nice” He said kissing me on the cheek

“Thank you… I’m dressing up for you… note the cords instead of jeans” I said smiling

“Aren’t you the best” He said as we walked out to the car. Nick was already in the back seat

“Hey Nick” I said sliding into the front seat.

“Hi”

“Nervous?”

“Pshh No”

“Really?”

“No… I am… kind of” I turned and smiled at him.

“Remember… you’re in a band. Every time you think ‘oh what if she doesn’t like me?’ remember you’re in a band… and girls love that” I said winking at him. He rolled his eyes at me. I turned back around.

“Girls love boys in bands?” Kevin said glancing at me

“Absolutely” I said as we drove to pick up Nick’s date. We drove up to a big white house.

“Be right back” Nick said as he hopped out of the car. He went to the house and knocked on the door. A tall skinny blonde girl came out of the house and kissed Nick on the cheek

“She’s gorgeous! How old is she?” I said in the car

“15”

“Why can’t girls look like how I looked when I was fifteen?”

“What did you look like when you were fifteen?”

“Alright… so maybe I was pretty, but I was a ballerina, I had to be pretty”

“You were a ballerina?”

“Ah yes another look into my secretive past” I said looking at Kevin “But back on track… look at her! She looks at least 18”

“Are you intimidated by a 15 year old girl?”

“When she looks like that, yes” I said as Nick opened the door for Lucy.

“You don’t open doors for me” I said in a fake jealous tone

“Well I know you’d just make some sort of sarcastic comment or make fun of me… or something along those lines” Kevin said glancing over

“You know me too well” I said sarcastically

“And you prove my point” I glared at him

“So, you’re Melissa?” Lucy said from the back seat

“Yep, I’m Melissa”

“I’ve heard so much about you”

“I’ve heard… tons about you too”

“Awesome”

“It is” I said turning back around to face to front

“So is she Kevin’s girlfriend?” Lucy whispered in the back seat

“Girlfriend? Umm… well, uhh… I don’t know for sure” Nick said. I laughed

“Yeah she is” Kevin said from the front

“She is?” Nick said surprised “When did this happen?”

“When your brother was being a jerk this afternoon” I said glaring at Kevin. Soon we were at the movies.
