“Hey Jordynn,” I muttered trying to sound excited. I looked down at my shoes and diverted my eyes from her. I couldn’t have her knowing. And it wasn’t fair for me to be angry with her when she didn’t know. Gah! This was all too confusing. It was then I remembered that my knight in shining armor was standing there.
“Hey Cody.” I chirped my demeanor instantly brightening. My peripheral vision caught Jordynn rolling her eyes. That stung a bit.
“Hey, um, Addy, do you want your cappuccino now” she said obviously trying to divert my attention from Cody. I nodded said thanks and grabbed the caffeine, I had a feeling I would need it. I turned back around to Cody hoping to give Jordynn the hint. I could feel my conscience screaming at me from the back of my head. What are you doing? She’s your best friend! You can’t let a measly boy ruin your friendship! I, to my own horror, ignored it and continued to flirt away with good ol’ scrumptious.
“Bye,” Jordynn muttered, I could hear the hurt in her voice. I turned to smile at her, it took all of my strength to keep the maliciousness from it. I could her feet walking down the side walk and my insides were singing the halleluiah chorus.
The bus ride was uneventful as usual, well at least up until that last three minutes of our ride. It was my fault, but I had to know.
“So. . .” I said slowly. “How do you know Jordynn?”
He looked at my for a few, long, seconds.
“Addy, you know that I don’t like her right?” he said quietly. He was staring right into my eyes.
“I-” I didn’t know what to say. “Okay” I said feebly.
“Good,” he said and we were at school. He stood and waited for me to stand.
I stood up and started to leave but his caught my arm and pulled me back. “Yes?” I muttered. My heart was jumping out of my chest. I swallowed. I could never have been prepared for what happened next.
He leaned down and, kissed me. It was quick, a peck, but still. It took all of my concentration to breathe. By the time I was fully operational again Cody was already of the bus.
“Are you getting of kid?” asked the old bus driver.
“Er,” I said confused. He stared at me. “Yes,” I said as if I suddenly had an epiphany. I walked of the bus, the driver staring at me as if I were crazy.
