These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven’t Figured It Out Yet
Panic! At The Disco
I sat in silence, comprehending what Laura just told me. Oh, God. This is not how I planned my Friday night. “I-I think I’m gonna go to bed now.” I mumbled. Laura remained quiet as I stood up and slowly made my way up the stairs, effortlessly.
I quietly closed my door and locked it. I leaned against the back of my door as I tried to calm down. I crouched down and balled up as I began to brake down. I felt cold droplets fall from my face onto my hands that covered my eyes. I cried in silence, in the dark. I felt alone. I lifted my head and wiped my eyes on my hoodie. I sat up and sniffled as I walked over to my phone that was lying on the floor. I looked at the time. It was already 9:46. I dialled Jennifer’s number and waited a moment.
“Hello?” She yelled from the other end, with what sounded like nightclub music.
“Jennifer?” I almost whimpered.
“What? Who is this?” She yelled.
“Jen! It’s me! Ryan!”
“What? I don’t know any Bryans!”
“RYAN!” I yelled, hearing my voice echo.
“Hang on, Bryan.” I rolled my eyes. I paced myself around the room, still in the dark with only the moonlight from my window beaming on me. I stopped dead in my tracks to hear Jennifer giggling and a man’s voice.
“Chris, stop it.” She giggled. “What? I can’t help it. You’re too good!” I heard him reply. I felt my heart sink.
I heard more laughing until she spoke into the phone.
“Who is this again?”
“Bryan. I mean Ryan!” She suddenly became silent.
“I still can’t hear you! I’m gonna go outside. Hang on!”
I clenched my fist as I heard that creep whisper disgusting things to her, which made her laugh.
Everything became quiet as she spoke into the phone.
“Hello?” She giggled as she spoke into the line.
“Jennifer.” I sounded dead serious.
“Yes? Who is this?”
“Take a long guess.”
There was a silence, but I heard her heavy breathing.
“It’s Ryan, genius.”
“Uh… Ryan? Hey baby.” She sounded nervous. Busted!
“What have you been up to?”
“Studying for tomorrow.”
“Really? Then what was that blearing music?”
“I’m at my cousins.”
“Then who’s that dirt bag you’re with, who I can HEAR YOU WHISPERING TO?!”
“A friend.”
“DON’T LIE TO ME, JENNIFER! I HEARD EVERYTHING YOU TWO WERE DOING!”
“I don’t have to put up with this.” She huffed.
“That’s what pisses me off! You don’t deal with issues! You run away! And you’re not even faithful! I can’t leave you for a damn second without you running after some pig!”
“Go to hell, Ryan! You’re not enough for me! You’re too high and mighty! When was the last time you and I ever had fun?!”
“I’m not going to sell myself out to you, Jennifer! If that’s your idea of fun, then you can forget it!”
“What are you saying?!”
“I’m saying WE’RE OVER!!” I slammed the phone shut and threw my phone on the bed.
I collapsed onto the bed. Why is life so cruel? What have I done to deserve this? Reece was right. She was no good, I just didn’t see it.
“God, why are you doing this?!” I cried out, while on my knees. I stopped instantly and became quiet as someone knocked on my door.
“Ryan?” It wasn’t Laura, it was… Reece?
“What?”
“Can I come in?”
“Why?”
“Coz it’s cold out here and my best friend is really upset.”
I thought for a moment, wiped away my tears and opened the door.
He walked in, with an expressionless face. I locked the door instantly. He sat on the floor with his legs into his chest and his arms on his knees. I walked over and leaned against the bed.
“Laura told me.”
“Oh.”
“I think she’s right. Don’t get so upset. The doctors may be wrong. This is only an opinion of theirs. And it was only one test.”
“I know, but it’s just, the thought of being alone, again.”
“Well, there is that new-”
“I’m not staying with that wack-job evil scientist, Reece!” I hissed.
He sunk back a bit.
“That’s not all, what else is wrong?”
“Nothen.”
“Come on, Ryan. I can see right through you.”
I sighed deeply.
“You were right about Jennifer. When you told me at school.”
“I was right? Sweet!” He sounded even more surprised then I did.
“She was with some jerk when I called her. So I broke up with her.”
“I told ya man, emos and cheerleaders don’t mix.”
“Yeah, but she quit to be emo.”
“Um, better make that wanna-be emo.”
“I guess you’re right about that too. She did look pretty creepy in that black mini skirt with dark make-up.”
“I guess she couldn’t leave her old self behind.”
“I’m glad she’s gone. She was never there for me.”
Reece moved closer and put his arm around me.
“You gonna be right, man?”
“Yeah, thanks. Don’t know what I’d do without a friend like you, Reece.”
Reece pulled away and stood up.
“Now that you feel better, how bout we go get drunk?!” He yelled in glory. I cocked an eye at him.
“I’m 17.”
“And?”
I sighed. “Just a tad too young, Einstein.”
“Oh, yeah. My bad.” He slid down and sunk his head down.
“What now?” He asked.
“Now, I think I’m gonna stare at the wall for a good 20 minutes, message Lex on VampireFreaks.com and then, go to bed.”
“Of coarse. What a normal night.”
“I’m not in the mood for much else, Reece.”
“Ok… Well, I’m guessing you want me to leave?”
“Well, if you want to stay, you’re most welcome to, but, a big partier like you, I think you wouldn’t want to hang around a low-life like me.”
“WHAT?! Ryan! You are my best friend! I’m not going to bail on you! I never have before have I?”
I shrugged, and pulled my legs into my chest and stared at the wall with an expressionless face.
“Uh, Ryan? Are you alright?”
I didn’t reply, I just sat and stared into space, letting my mind take me away. I felt calm until Reece shoved me to the ground.
“What the hell?!” I hissed at him.
“You scared me, I thought you died or something.”
“Dude? What is wrong with you?!”
“Well, who sits and stares at a wall?”
“I do! I am a man of my word!” I spoke with little emotion and crawled back up and sat in the same position again.
Reece sighed and sat back down again.
“You don’t have to stay here if you don’t want to.” I mumbled.
“I know, but I would feel bad if I just left you here alone.”
“I’ll be right. Go on.”
“No, I have a better idea.”
“…..”
“I said; I have a better idea.” He repeated louder.
“What?”
“It’s only 10:15. Lets go catch a movie. That kick-ass new movie is playing now. Come on.”
“Nah.”
“Come on!” He smiled while nudging me.
“Oh, fine!” I gave in, as I heaved myself off the ground.
“Go get ready, the next session time is11:00.”
He walked out of my room leaving me in darkness. I sighed as I switched on my bedside lamp and picked up my wallet and phone. I shuddered as I remembered of the conversation with Jennifer, and me so I put my phone back down on the bed. After a few minutes, I opened the door and slowly made my way down the stairs.
Reece sat on the sofa waiting for me. Once he saw me, he stood up and smiled.
“Wow, you actually came out. I thought you were just going to stay in there.” He spoke with amazement. I smiled weakly as I opened the front door and walked out without and other word.
After about 20 minutes, we finally made it to the cinemas. We walked into the building, admiring the light affects in the auditorium. We walked up to the ticket seller and bought two tickets to see Prom Night. Once we had our tickets and our snacks, we sat down at the seat next to room 4, waiting for the people to clear out. That’s when I heard a familiar laugh in the distance. I debated whether to look up or not, but I did anyway, to almost wish I hadn’t.
There in the distance, I saw Jennifer making out with another guy. I heard my heart tear in two. Just when I thought my day couldn’t get any worse, I manage to prove myself wrong. And, to make things worse, Jennifer suddenly stopped and looked in my direction, I looked away, as she had a sickening smile on her face. That’s when she got up and made her way over to me. Oh, god, what now?
