“I’m sorry Riley, but it’s final. End of discussion.” The finality in the mother’s tone of voice showed that there would be no convincing her. This left a sullen look on a young girl’s face, she could be any older than the age of 16. Her green eyes began to turn puffy and red while her lower lip quivered.
“But mom, I can’t leave! Where will I finish school? All my friends are he-” And before she could finish her sentence, the girl was cut off by her strong-willed mother.
“Riley, that’s enough. You’ll finish the remainder of your sophomore year at the lovely high school in the new neighborhood. You’re saying goodbye to your friends tomorrow. When I get home, I expect to see all of your things packed neatly away and ready for the move. Understand?” The assertive woman gave her daughter a sharp look, almost more intimidating than she had expected.
“Yes, mother..” A thick layer of melancholy wrapped around the words that could barely escape her lips. She was beginning to hate these battles with her mother, especially when they were battles lost in vain.
Standing in the park alone, a girl with bright green eyes scanned for her friend amongst the frolicking children. Her long dark blond hair danced in the wind as she whipped her head around to see if he was headed towards her way from behind. Waiting a few minutes, she began to grow impatient and play with her hands. The delicate fingers weaved in and around each other out of nervousness, a habit that she had long promised to defeat. Suddenly, her eyes caught a glimpse of a familiar patch of black hair that belonged to the boy that held her heart.
“Logan!” Riley’s small body balanced on the balls of her feet while she tried to maintain her balance and wave to her best friend at the same time. He walked towards her, picking up the pace and still holding that always present sparkle in his eyes.
“Hey there, kiddo!” The two 16 year olds hugged each other as if they haven’t been in each other’s presence since forever. While holding on, Riley couldn’t help but notice her heartbeat pulsing rapidly to the dancing of the butterflies within her stomach. She almost lost herself in the moment, until she remembered the awful news that she would need to break to Logan.
“Hey, Lo.. I have something to tell you..” He looked at her with concern in his eyes, but was only met with caution and fear in return.
“I don’t exactly know how to say this, but.. I’m moving.” Riley’s eyes had suddenly became watery once more as her voice shook when she said those last few words. Logan appeared confused, almost as if he didn’t want to believe it was true.
“I.. I don’t understand..”
Riley tried her best to try to make the goodbye as easy as it could be, but there was no way to hold Logan’s heart together when it was clearly shattering at the very thought of Riley leaving. All they could do was stand there and stare at each other, neither wanting to say those two words that meant the end of their friendship. Riley’s small body moved closer to Logan’s while she reached her arms out and gave her friend a final hug goodbye.
