Two [Shane Told] I Would Wait Forever
Chapter 2 : Two [Shane Told] I Would Wait Forever
By this point my bones ached and my muscles were sore, all from my neck to my ankles. I twisted off the cap of an Aquafina, and I cherished the icy water as it soothed my parched throat and cooled my core as it settled in my stomach. My hand was moist with the condensation from the bottle, and I wiped the exhaust across my forehead.
The couch that Matt and had I just dropped in the livingroom was the last bit of furniure, and we were now officially done moving. All that wasleft was to turn the keys from the old house into it's owner. Weplopped our fatigued bodies down onto the couch. The air was a thick, and well enough over 100degrees Fahrenheit, and it wasalmost too much to bare.
"Do you know where Mom is?" I asked.
"Do either of us ever know where she runs off to these days?"
"Good point. Shit, she changed so much when Dad left. I always thought she was stronger than that." Matt silently agreed with me.
"I can't stand this fucking heat," I complained, a good way to change the topic of conversation. "I think I'm going to go check out the pool." The blistering sun had already stripped me down into my bikini and a pair of boys' swimming trunks.
"Don't get in if there's other people. You don't know that they won't piss in it!" he said to me on my way out.
It wasa nice little court- perfectly symmetric houses with sparkling windows and green grass and 'Welcome Home!' mats. And at the very end of the circle lot was a small recreational park that only members of our community had the key to.
I padded over to the gate,my feet burning on thehot concrete andfeeling a little self-concious in just my swimming attire, and turned the key in it's lock until it clicked and grants me entry.
There was a playground with a slide and swings and monkey bars and a teeter-totter. Basketball court and ping pong table, swimming pool and hot tub, and lots of lush, healthy grass and picnic tables.
Nice, I thought, and nodded my head with great satisfaction. I made my way to the pool and sat on the edge, letting my feet fall into the cool water. Iwas not alone, for a couple sat on the stairs in the shallow end.
The girl, thin with shockingly blond hair, waved to me and called in a friendly voice, "Hello! You're the one who just moved in, aren't you?"
"Um, yeah, how'd you know?" I was swinging my legs back and forth in the heavenly liquid, my palms gripping the cement edge near the '8 ft.' warning.
"We saw you guys unloading when we were coming over here to the pool."
"Oh," is all I could think of to say.
"How do you like the Court so far?" I wondered why she is so sociable while her boyfriend is so distant.
"This is nice," I said with a wave of my arm toindicate that little area, "but that's really the only opinion I have so far." I stood up out of the pool and made up a lie before leaving: "I should really get back to helping my brother unpack."
"Okay, nice to meet you. See you around!" the girl cooned happily. My dripping legs left wet footsteps as I walked back to my new home.
At least I wouldn't be lonely here. She's my age, and seemed to be acceptable friendship material. Plus I've got my brother, who I was reallyclose with.
"That was quick," Matt commented when I got inside.
"There were people there," I replie vaguely. "I don't know they didn't pee in the water."
