Romeo stood up from the ditch and straightened his uniform as he stepped out onto the road. Robbie Williams was his latest alias, as was confirmed on his nametag. Funny, a lover sporting an Army disguise.
It was a beautiful Texas morning, the birds were singing and the air still had a moist taste.
Taste…
Robbie stopped in mid thought “what’s that taste?”
“Robbie? Robbie, come back to bed”
By now, the endless fields and awe-inspiring dawn were far outcast by this strange voice
Romeo turned and looked back down to the pile of blankets he just crawled out of. Sitting right in the middle, naked and only half covered, was a blonde haired women with bright green eyes.
By now the questions were flooding through Robbie’s head.
“who the hell is this?”
“what was she thinking, I don’t even know her”
“where are her clothes?”
“when did I get here?”
“why didn’t I notice her before?”
“wow… how did I score a chick like that?”
“is there anymore whiskey?”
Robbie was completely lost in his daze of confusion.
“you don’t remember anything do you?”
The seemingly young man immediately snapped to
“ma’am, I’m afraid not”

The girl began looking around for something to wear
“well I ‘m not surprised, you should be dead after all that drinking”
Her rough judgment was turned to a complete understatement as she threw a blanket aside to reveal dozens of empty bottles.
“now, I don’t feel right taking advantage of a heavily intoxicated and sensitive man such as yourself, but your plea was quite convincing… you called me your Juliet”
The memory brought a smile to this mystery girl’s face, but Robbie wasn’t as amused.
“I must have been completely smashed, I don’t even know your name”

The girl gave her on look of confusion
Maggie, it’s Maggie. Hey… shouldn’t you have a hangover or something? I mean, my skull is pounding and I didn’t even have a full bottle”
Romeo was never a man who wasted time. As sweet as Maggie seemed, this wasn’t his girl, if it was, he wouldn’t have woken up.
“I guess I must be graced”
The two both broke into brief laughter.
“well Maggie, I have to be back on the base by dusk. Lets clean up here and I’ll treat you to breakfast”
The girl didn’t seem angry at the thought of him leaving, it would simply be remembered(at least by her) as a wild night.
The two finished packing up their little “picnic”, buried the liquor bottles and drove back towards town.

It’s was the spring of 1926 and Robbie kept the look of a fit late-teen. Though the gods had given him the ability to slow his rate of aging and control the color of his hair and eyes, he preferred to “keep it simple”
Medium length dark brown hair, but he could never make up his mind on the eyes. Sometimes blue, others green. It was really a day to day thing. This was something Maggie noticed as their jeep pulled up at the diner
“you know, you’re very odd”
She sat sideways in the seat staring at him
“your right eye is brown. But, when you turned, I noticed the other is green”
Romeo immediately balanced things out.
“And just now!! Right as I say this, they both just turned blue! What are you?”

Robbie gave her a look and a strong tone
“please, lets just get some food and forget about this. Ok?”
Maggie looked down and calmly replied “well, they’re very pretty”

A compliment he’d heard countless times over the centuries, but still an honest one
“you can thank my father for those”

Their upbeat mood was revived in time for breakfast.

“Welcome to Jimmy’s Diner!”
Their waitress worse a tight skirt and a forced smile, she recognized Romeo but didn’t say anything.
Robbie Williams wore a lipstick stained collar and a look only to be matched by trembling prey
“ugh… ex’s” he thought to himself
death glares followed and Maggie was left only to imagine what went on between the two
“so, Dawn. Are we allowed to sit?”
Romeo’s grin was all too priceless as they were escorted to the smallest, dirties table in the place

All past issues aside, Romeo had to make sure he didn’t let anything out in his moment of alcoholic grace.
“two coffee’s”
Maggie was still figuring out the whole waitress thing
“if you don’t mind me asking, why is she ready to rip your head off?”
Robbie didn’t want to remember the details
“just a bad experience”
He smiled so she didn’t feel bad about bringing it up
“so… Juliet huh? What else did I blurt out?”
Maggie laughed short second before responding
“you wanted to know the places I’d traveled, people I had met. That sort of thing”
Safe, Romeo took a deep breathe
“well, Maggie. It’s was great meeting you, but I have a number of things I have to attend to before I leave. If I’m ever in the area, I’ll look you up”
Maggie had one last question
“what were those tally marks on left side of your body”
Robbie looked down
“one for every heartbreak”
He left a fifty on the table and headed for the door. But not without a wink for Dawn.

A girl he had never met, but slept with. Being served by a girl he thought he loved, but was only using him. “some sign I don’t understand” he thought

Romeo got in the jeep and tore off his shirt. That girl learned too much and it was time to drop this name and move on.
He even left the jeep in the parking lot. Instead, he just started walking down the street. And as he went, his hair grew out, and grew lighter. His eyes turned a dark dark brown and facial hair began to grow.
From a soldier to a hobo, his transformation was complete. Romeo continued down the road, out away from town until a passed the place where he had spent the prior night.
He tried to ignore the fact that, if wasn’t destine to be with another, he could have grown old with hat sweet girl. But the idea was like an old song he’d heard a thousand times, now she would be just another tally on his chest.
Romeo continued walking until the sun started setting.
It meant nothing though, this grace he had gave him the ability to go without sleep. He continued walking, simply because he wanted to.
Eventually, after hours of mind numbing boredom, a tree came along. It would be a fine place to bed down… for a couple days.
He climbed halfway up the tall maple and lounged on the huge branches.
In the distance came the sounds of a engine roaring along.
“jackass”
Romeo mumbled as he shifted his position.
“I hope he crashes”

The sound came closer and closer until the entire tree seemed to jump into the air. Romeo opened his eyes in mid air
“oh, what the fuck”
His body slammed down into the steaming remains of what was once the engine, and he would have played dead, but the heap began to burn.
So, after grabbing the motionless driver, This strange hobo from the tree moved off to a safe distance. As he walked, Romeo noticed that this joy rider was a young man. And this young man had taken a major blow to the head.
“well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is, you won’t be suffering for long. I’ve seen this before and you aint waking up man. The good news, I got your wallet”
Romeo set down the kid, who seemed to be in his late teens, and began searching him for anything useful.
“lets see. you got five bucks, a revolver with four bullets, and your name is… Clyde Barrow”
The hobo looked down at the body
“so.. You’re dead now, pity”
He then stood up and looked over at the fire that had now spread to the entire tree.
“well, you died doing what you love. I’m guessing, I mean you didn’t have any cops on your ass and you aint drunk”
Boom!! A part of the wreck exploded
“and you did go out in style… quite the character weren’t you?”
“well here’s the real good news. I like your style and your name aint half bad. So I hope you don’t mind me stealing it for a while”
Romeo reached down and pulled the shirt off of Clyde
“hmm.. Same size and everything, I think this could work”
The hobo threw on the shirt, his hair shifted back to a shorter and darker brown.
“Clyde Barrow… yeah, that works”
