03: NERD KING;;

'Hey, baby, how was your day?' I looked at mum for a minute.

'Horrible. I ha-have to t-tutor L-Luka Black who's like- who's like th-the dumb-dumbest kid in s-school' She smiled sympathetically to me.

'Aw, Milton... you're such a nice boy...' I sighed and walked through the tiny place and to my bedroom.

I lived in a really, really tiny apartment with only two bedrooms, one dirty bathroom in between them, and a kitchen. There was also a tiny hall like thing that we used as a living room with a TV and a filthy red couch.

I lived with my mum only, after dad had died three years ago. She worked her butt off to give me a good education and I made sure I made her proud.

Our apartment was exactly 30 meters square.

I dropped my backpack on my bed and took off my jacket. Then I walked towards the bathroom to have a bath, and I looked myself in the dirty mirror for a minute or two.

Yeah, I did look nerdy.

I sighed contemplating my reflection.

But what can I do about it?

I mean, I seriously need my glasses and the contacts make me so uncomfortable I hate wearing them...

Although I could try.

I frowned... maybe I could look a little better.

I opened the drawer and took out my contacts, then I took of my glasses and tried to put them on. After about 10 minutes I finally did it, and although tears were rolling down my face and it itched like hell, I kept them on.

I closed my eyes for a while, then I opened them again, looking at the mirror again.

Wow, it was a huge difference.

My eyes were actually kind of big... and blue? I always thought they were green.

Then I got a little exited and turned on the water in the sink, getting off the hair gel I used to wear make it tidy. I towel dried my hair and looked at me again... how can I make my hair look normal, but not that untidy? I ruffled it and then shook my head, my straight hair fell lightly over my eyes, covering them really slightly. It actually looked good.

Then I grinned at myself.

I never thought I could look good, mainly because I never really cared until now.

It really bugged me that Luka and his friends thought I was a nerd.

I unbuttoned the two top buttons of my shirt and loosened my tie a bit. Then I unbuttoned the buttons on my sleeves, folding them up and finally, I un-tucked my shirt.

I walked out the bathroom towards the kitchen.

'Mum, d-do I-I-I-I look nor-normal?' She looked back at me and her eyebrows raised in surprise.

'Wow... Milton you look grate, honey. Are you wearing your contacts?' I nodded.

'I don't care if I-I-I look gr-grate or not, d-d-do I look normal?' She smiled at me kindly and walked towards me. Then she caressed my cheek.

'Milton, you've always look normal, baby. You're a very handsome young man, you knew that? I'm glad you're willing to show it off now' I smiled.

So I did look normal.

I wondered what would they think. Maybe they wouldn't even notice.

'Why are you so keen in looking good, huh? Is there a girl there?' My cheeks went pink for some reason.

You see, I've never been familiar with this type of conducts in the human being. So it really creeps me out when my body reacts before my brain and I can't seem to control it.

'No, there's n-no girl, g-girl... I j-just wanna l-l-look different' She smiled wider.

'I think that's great, Milton' I kissed her cheek.

'Thanks mum' Then I walked to my bedroom again, shutting the door this time and I got out my biology book.

I grinned at the mirror in the bathroom and then chuckled to myself.

I liked the way I looked... and that was a strange feeling. I still didn't know how would my friends react, or them.

I sighed and looked myself again, re-adjusting my hair and fixing my clothes. I didn't look untidy, surprisingly. I only had unbuttoned the top button of the shirt and loosened a bit the tie, but everything else was perfect as usual. Oh well, I couldn't let myself make my hair untidy. I still was myself after all. but I only combed it to the side, no gel this time. Which made a difference.

I was late because I couldn't decide if I wanted to put my glasses or contacts... you know, the self-consciousness kicking in... I decided on contacts and it took me 20 minutes to put them on, now I'm 30 minutes late for my first class.

I sighed deeply and walked out the bathroom, and quickly towards my first period: History.

I stared at the door for a couple of minutes and then inhaled deeply before knocking twice and opened it.

Everyone looked at me, at first, not knowing who I was.

Did I really looked that different without glasses?

'Sit down, Milton, I'll let you come in this one time... you look good, boy'

I looked at the floor, embarrassed and walked towards Bernie who looked at me in awe.

'Milton?' He whispered to me as I sat down. I smiled at him.

'Hey...' He then grinned and I sighed relieved.

'You look grate, Tony!' I smiled.

'Th-thanks, B-Bernie...'

I thanked God only Vincent was here, and he out of all his friends, was the kindest. Luka was in this class as well, but I guess he was also late.

Not that he was kind, but he was kind of bossed around by the others so when he was alone he was kind of nice.

It was funny, he treated me nice almost everyday until Katrina told him to beat me up or something like that.

'Looking good, Stuart!' He screamed from the other side of the classroom.

I smiled to myself, feeling a little more confident.

Until the door opened, that is, and Luka came in, with his usual smirk.

The teacher looked at him and then ignored him.

Luka looked around looking for Vincent and his eyes landed suddenly on me.

He looked at me a while longer then his smirk just grew, and he walked pass my desk.

'Nice change, Dexter'

I almost jolted in surprise but kept my composure, trying to ignore the funny feeling in my tummy.

Again, those unfamiliar human conducts, I just hate them.
