My head pounded and I felt sick to my stomach as I slowly started drifting back from unconsciousness. I couldn’t remember if I had fallen asleep or passed out last night. I assumed it was the latter since I was still hung over. The events of last night were a blur. There wasn’t much I remembered after my fight with Chris. And all I could remember after that were my shots of tequila and conversations with Theon. Everything else was probably lost from my memory forever.

I was turning over in my bed to make myself more comfortable when I bumped into something solid. Since Chris’s words from yesterday still echoed in my head, haunting me like the ghost of a murdered little girl, I rationalized that this could not be Chris next to me. So who else could it be?

I reluctantly opened my eyes as the figure next to me came into focus. The first thing that appeared was a tuft of golden blonde hair. My eyes ran down to the owner’s bare chest, which was fully facing me since said owner was lying on his side. Something glimmered on his chest from the small stream of sunlight that ran through an opening in my curtains. As my eyes could finally focus clearly, I realized that it was a nipple ring. And that’s when I felt my heart practically stop.

The hangover disintegrated almost immediately when I came into reality with who I was in bed with. I quickly sat up as the sound of my heart pounded in my ears and my head slightly spun. I looked under the covers to see if I even had any attire on, and felt sick to my stomach when I saw that only the thin fabric material of my bra and underwear covered my most private regions.

I quickly rushed out of my bed and to my closet, finding my silk robe and putting it on. I walked to the windows and pushed the curtains wide open, earning a pained moan from my ex-bedmate. I walked back over the bed and started shaking him awake. “Wake up!” I practically yelled since my shaking was unsuccessful.

“What do you want?” he mumbled in an irritated tone as he buried his head in my pillow and pulled away from me.

“What happened last night?” I hurriedly asked him, continuing to shake him in order to make sure he gave me a reasonable an audibly answer.

“What are you talking about?” he asked in his still grumpy tone. I got so annoyed that I pulled the covers off of him and threw them to the floor, leaving him in just his boxers. He finally did as he was told and sat up looking quite annoyed. “What the hell do you want?”

What happened last night?!” I repeated for the now conscious Theon. I was now starting to go into complete meltdown mode. For all I knew, I could have been pregnant with Mr. Arrogance’s demon spawn.

“How am I supposed to know? I had more to drink than you,” he calmly replied as he yawned and rubbed his eyes as if nothing at all had happened.

“Oh my God, what if we had sex?” I said, more to myself than him. I buried my face in my hands and wondered what I should do.

He let out a sigh and leaned his head back on my headboard. “We didn’t have sex. I carried you in from the taxi and woke you up to tell you to change. You slid off your dress and just climbed into your bed. When I was about to leave, you said you were lonely without Chris and asked me to stay with you. Nothing happened after that,” he stated, still taking the situation very calmly.

I looked up at him and found him to have a really sincere look upon his face, as if he really knew what he was talking about. When I finally found him to be honest, I let out a weak smile as the worry that was once etched upon my face deteriorated. “Thanks for carrying me in for the second time then,” I replied.

He smiled warmly at me, appreciating the fact that we were on good terms again. “So why would you care if we had sex anyways? Aren’t you and Chris finally over?” he asked as he swung his legs over the side of the bed and sat to my side.

“I don’t know…” I said with a heavy sigh as I stood up and made my way over to the bathroom to freshen up. After brushing my teeth, washing my face, and the likes, I went back into the kitchen, allowing Theon to get ready for the day as well. I was just making a pot of coffee when Theon walked back in.

“You’re really clingy when you’re drunk, you know that?” he stated as pushed himself up to sit on the counter. “Your arms were so tightly wrapped around me, I thought I would suffocate to death.”

“I’m a horrible drunk,” I replied laughing. “When you guys aren’t here, I don’t get drunk very often. It’s just Alex and I having a few beers at a sports bar while watching a game. I’m not a big partier.”

“I can tell. You always end up doing something incredibly stupid.”

I turned around and looked at him curiously. “What stupid thing did I do last night?”

Theon’s amused face turned into one of dreadful realization when he figured out that he had just said something he shouldn’t have said. For the next few seconds, he looked as if he was debating whether or not to tell me something. Just as he opened his mouth to answer, the doorbell rang out through the apartment, relieving him of his difficult decision.

“I expect you to tell me when I get back,” I warned him before exiting the kitchen and opening the door.

“Are you Aiden Drake?” the boy asked. He looked as if he was in his late teens and was casually dressed in jeans and a t-shirt as if he had just gotten back from high school.

“Yes, I am…” I replied, slightly confused as to why this kid arrived at my doorstep.

He looked to his side and waved, which I assumed was a cue for someone else to follow. A few seconds later, a second boy appeared with a large vase of red and white roses. If I had to guess, I’d say the vase contained at least two dozen of them.

“Where do you want these?” the empty-handed boy asked.

I opened the door for them. “Uhm…just put them on the coffee table,” I replied. They boys came in and set the beautiful ornament down in the center of the table. “Thank you,” I said, still shocked at the gesture.

“No problem. Have a good day, miss,” they said before exiting my flat and closing the door on their way out. I was still too busy staring mystified at the adornment of flowers before me to realize that they had even left.

“Who was it?” Theon asked, walking in with his cup of coffee. He noticed the flowers on the table a second later. “Wow, that is huge. Who’s it from?”

“I don’t know…” I answered as I walked to the arrangement and looked around all of the flowers for a note. I finally found one hidden underneath one of the matching white roses. I opened it up and read it silently:

My lovely Aiden,
I’m really sorry about my behavior yesterday. I have no excuses as to why I acted so rudely. Please answer your phone. We need to talk.
I love you so much.
Yours truly,
Chris

I let out a shaky sigh as I handed the card back to a patient Theon and sat down on the couch, burying my face back into my hands. For some reason, the note had me feel incredibly guilty. Here I was, holding a grudge against my boyfriend on Christmas Eve because he accused me of cheating when, just the night before, I slept in the same bed as another man, cuddled up closely to him. It seemed like I was the one that overreacted last night.

“So what are you going to do?” Theon asked me as he sat down on the chair across from me.

“I should forgive him, right?” I asked, looking up at Theon desperately, hoping he would somehow know the right answer.

“I don’t know,” he replied, shrugging. “He was late for your party when you specifically told him not to be, was he not?”

“You don’t like him very much, do you?” I asked, letting a small smile creep onto my lips since it was obvious he didn’t want me to forgive Chris.

“Well, he did punch me in the face.”

I stayed quiet for that comment as I deeply thought about how I should work out my situation. I didn’t want to stay angry with Chris forever, but it was obvious that we needed to work some things out. If I did decide end things with Chris, I would only be making Farrah’s point of wanting to be alone – and that, I didn’t want to do.

“I guess I’ll call Chris,” I finally said as I got up from the couch. He got up after me and followed me into my bedroom.

“I guess I’ll get a shower,” he said as he picked up his clothes from the floor. He dug into one of the pockets of his jacket and handed me my cell phone that he kept in there for me last night. “I hope you two work things out,” he stated, flashing me a smile and walking off.

I looked at my phone and saw that I had seven missed calls, all from Chris. I let out one final sigh before finally gathering up the courage to call him back.

“Aiden?” a hopeful voice answered on the other line.

“Hey Chris…” I replied weakly. “Thanks for the flowers.”

“So you got them? Good, good. I wasn’t sure if you would since it was Christmas Eve and all…” he said. This statement was followed by more silence. I didn’t think our conversation could have been any more awkward. I would have preferred fighting than keeping all of this emotion bottled up. “Listen, Aiden, I’m very sorry about last night. I had no right to accuse you of associating with Theon in any way. I know you would never do anything with any other man.”

Once again, the pangs of guilt had its strong grip on me. Calm down, Aiden. You did nothing wrong. All you did was sleep in the same bed as Theon. Nothing big… I thought to myself, trying to talk myself down. Of course, I tried not to think of the fact that I was cuddled up with him while both of us were half naked.

“It’s alright, Chris. It just annoys me that you showed up at the party late. I asked one thing of you before you left my flat last week and that was to show up on time, and that’s the one thing that you did not do,” I said, not bother to hide the irritation in my voice.

“I’m sorry, but I don’t see why it was necessary for me to be there. Did you just want me there with you while everyone congratulated you on such a successful outcome? Did you need a hand to hold while they praised you for handling the decorations well?” he answered back in an equally irritated voice.

I didn’t answer for a while because I was seriously considering hanging up on him right then and there, but he seemed to redeem himself before I could decide. “I’m really sorry for showing up late, but I want you to see my point of view too. I was watching an ice hockey game with Mike and you know how much I love that sport. Remember all the hockey games I used to take you to?”

Even though he couldn’t see me, I couldn’t help but let a smile cross my lips. He really did know my weak spots. “I guess I understand…” I replied. “So when are you coming back here?”

There was some silence on the other end and I knew the answer would not be a good one. “Well…I didn’t think that you would forgive me so soon because you usually wait like, a week or two before calling me back so…I kind of made some plans,” he said, sounding slightly nervous now.

I closed my eyes and brought my hand to my temples, caressing them softly and awaiting for the headache I knew was soon going to come from this. “What kind of plans, Chris?” I said through gritted teeth as I tried to calm myself down.

“Mike decided it would be a good idea to go skiing for Christmas so we’re in a cabin somewhere in northern California right now,” he replied slowly and quietly. “I think I’ll be back some time Monday though so I can see you before my flight leaves that night.”

I let out a frustrated sigh. “Don’t even bother. I hope you have merry fucking Christmas,” I practically yelled into the phone before hanging up on him. I put my phone on silent so the hundreds of calls I would be receiving from Chris wouldn’t annoy me and threw the phone onto the bed, trying to remove it from my mind as I went into my bathroom to get a shower. When I got out, I was feeling refreshed, as if nothing had happened between Chris and I. I ignored the phone as I got dressed and went back into the living room to play with little Mini.

“How did things turn out?” Theon asked as he walked in to the room, now fully clothed.

“Not too well,” I replied as I threw a ball for Mini to fetch.

“That’s too bad,” he replied as he sat down on the floor next to me. “Do you want to hang up some Christmas decorations or something? Your place is so…plain.”

“I like it that way, thanks,” I answered as Mini came jogging back.

“So what are we doing for Christmas then?” he asked.

“We could…uhm…go grocery shopping today and buy all the things we need to make a huge Christmas dinner. We’ll spend the whole day tomorrow cooking and invite the others over.”

“That sounds good to me,” he replied. “When is Chris coming back?”

“He’s not,” I answered in an emotionless voice without looking up. He took this as his cue to shut up. And just like that, I realized that this week with Theon would be nothing like the last. We would we have our ups and downs, but our downs wouldn’t be nearly as bad as they had been. Chris being gone would have its advantages after all…
