I woke up to someone shaking me and opened one sleepy eye to see Tsunami standing over me.
"Supper's done, Aira-chan!" She chirped happily. I nodded and stood up, following her into the kitchen. I sat down at the table next to Sakura, my eyes half open.
"You look dead..." Sakura said.
"Un..." I made a small noise in the back of my throat, too tired to speak.
"Is that all you can say?" Kakashi asked jokingly. I shot him the darkest glare I could muster, causing Sakura to scoot away from me, and Tazuna to flinch slightly. Tsunami sat down plates of food in front of us just as Naruto and Sasuke practically kicked the door open, Sasuke practically dragging Naruto inside. I looked up at their tired, worn selves and suppressed a laugh.
"We made it to the top!" Naruto exclaimed happily, yet his voice betrays just how tired he is.
"Good job!" I said, lacking enthusiasm.
"Did someone just wake her?" Naruto asked. Kakashi waved it off.
"Since both of you did so well, you both can help Sakura guard Tazuna-san tomorrow when he goes to work on the bridge. Aira and I will come with you as well," Kakashi said.
"Yeah!" Naruto said, throwing his arm in the air, causing him and Sasuke to topple over.
"You total moron," Sasuke snapped, causing everyone to laugh at them. The boys got up, with my help, and sat down at the table, eating all the food in front of them. I got about halfway through my meal by the time they finished theirs.
"Well the bridge is nearing completion and its all thanks to you five!" Tazuna said happily, smiling at us.
"But please don't overdo it! Be careful!" Tsunami said her words tinted with sadness.
Tazuna ignored her. "I wanted to ask you earlier, but... Why did you come on this mission when I lied about it?" He asked.
"We couldn't just let you die, Tazuna-san. Even if these four hadn't of come I would have, even if we wouldn't have gotten far," I said. "Besides, it would have been a blow below the belt if we left you to die. And we aren't cowards."
"Aira is right. To abandon one's duty is not courageous. Below the courageous, there is nothing," Kakashi said. Tazuna and Tsunami take in those words, looks of shock on their faces for a moment. "The first's Hokage's words."
Inari, who had kept quiet all through dinner, looked over at Naruto, his expression hidden by his hat. I looked at him as he watched the sleeping Naruto, knowing he is thinking about someone that was close to him. After a moment a tear slipped from his eye and lands on the table.
"Why...?" He whispered. Naruto looks up.
"What?"
"Why do you try so hard?!" Inari screamed, slamming his hands on the table. "Even if you train you can't beat Gatoh's men!" Everyone eyes widened in shock at the screaming boy. Even mine had, before I let my calm nature take over and let him get it off his chest. I had been wondering when he would do something like that. He looked ready to explode when we first met him. "No matter how hard you work... Or how big you talk! Against the strong, the weak always lose!" He cried. I sighed, setting my elbow on the table and resting my head in my hand.
"Be quiet!" Naruto snapped, laying his head back on the table. "I'm different than you."
"Shut up! Seeing you pisses me off! You don't know a damn thing about this country, yet you butt in! You haven't had a rough life! You're always having fun! Laughing! I'm not like you!" Inari screamed. Naruto's eyes went dark as he turned to glare at Inari.
"So, like an actor in a tragic play, you are going to cry everyday, all day long?" Naruto asked, venom dripping from his words. "An idiot like you should just keep on crying!" Naruto looked up, his normally bright blue eyes dark, serious. "You sissy!" He snapped. Inari's eyes water and his face twisted up in anger and sadness, along with shock at someone shouting at him.
"Naruto! You went too far!" Sakura snapped. Naruto ignored her and got up and left. I sighed, looking at little Inari as he tried to cry as quietly as he can. "Naruto!" Sakura said. I stood up and followed Naruto, ignoring the crying boy behind me.
"Aira..." Kakashi started, but sighed. He glanced at Inari, but said nothing else.
I caught up with Naruto in his room. He had his back to me, but he knew I was there. I crossed my arms and lean against the doorframe, standing quietly as I waited for him to say something.
"He has no idea..." Naruto said.
"Of course he doesn't. That picture, the one he cries over at night, I asked Tsunami about it before I went to sleep one night. It was his step-father that Gatoh had killed because he was trying to save the village," I said. Naruto turns to look at me, his eyes saddened, seeming to regret what he did. "So, nii-san, tell me about you. Why did you get so protective when Inari said you had no idea what is was like?" I asked him gently. He looked at the ground and I walked in the room and bent down in front of him, placing a hand in his mass of blonde hair. "Tell me, Naruto."
He sighed. "I've never known my parents... I grew up alone. Everyone in the village shunned me, but I never knew why until recently. Apparently, when I was a newborn, I had a Demon Fox sealed inside me," Naruto said sadly.
"Everyone always ignored me," Naruto went on as I listened patiently. "Before I found out they looked at me like I wasn't human, or they just wouldn't look at me at all..." He sighed. "So to get everyone's attention I used to pull pranks on the village. I did that until Iruka-sensei gave me his hitai-ate. Yet, even with the symbol of the ninja, I still didn't get any respect."
"That's not true Naruto," I said. I sat down cross-legged in front of him while he spoke, listening intently. "I respect you. I know that you are strong, and I know that you would do anything for your friends." I smiled at him, bringing my hand up and ruffling his blonde hair with it. "Think back for a moment. When Zabuza had nearly killed me and Sasuke, you blocked us off from him, knowing that you couldn't win. And then you threw the kunai that, not only freed Kakashi, but destroyed Zabuza's water clone as well." I laughed slightly. "You're a good boy, Naruto. Even if no one else noticed it, I do. You'll do well to remember that," I told him, and stood. I walked to the door, but paused for a moment, and looked back at him over my shoulder. "Oh and Naruto" He looked up at me. "Go apologize to Inari. He may not have had it as rough as you, but to him it was just as bad, if not worse." I finished off with that and left Naruto in his room. I walked past a window and look out when I heard voices. Kakashi and Inari were sitting outside, talking to each other. I smiled slightly before heading up to my shared room.
"I'm really sorry about what Naruto said Tsunami-san." I heard Sakura saying to Tsunami in the shared room. I sighed quietly and walked in, my hands stuffed in my pockets.
"Naruto has had a tough life as well. When Inari said that he didn't understand, he snapped," I told her, glancing up at Sakura.
"Aira-chan-"
"It's ok, Sakura. I understand what Aira-chan is getting at." Tsunami bowed. "I'm sorry that Inari screamed at all of you like that."
"It's fine. I was actually wondering when the poor boy would snap. I'd been waiting ever since we first met," I said, shrugging my shoulders. "Now I'm going to go to bed. We have a long day ahead of us. You'd better get some sleep as well, Sakura." She nodded and lied down, already changed for bed. I just pulled on a large shirt before lying down and falling asleep myself.
I sat up slowly, hearing people shuffle around me. I saw Sakura starting to get dressed, and notice the door closing as Tsunami goes downstairs.
"Morning Aira-chan! We're going to the bridge today!" Sakura said happily. I grunted in response and she rolled her eyes. "We'll wait for you downstairs," She said. I nodded and stood up after she walked out and closed the door behind her. I walked over to my bag and pulled out a green tank top, a black over shirt, and a pair of pants that were easy to move in. I pulled them on, letting my tank show off most of my stomach, and tie my long hair up in a bun to keep it out of my face, holding it up with senbon. My bangs fall back in my face as I sighed and grabbed my kunai pouch, katana, and hitai-ate, which I tie around my neck, and walked downstairs, tying my katana to my hip and my pouch to my leg. Kakashi glanced up at me from his food as I walked in, examining everyone.
"Where is Naruto?" I asked.
"He's too tired, and he pushed himself to his limit yesterday," Kakashi said as I sat down, Tsunami pushing a plate of food in front of me. I ate quickly, and followed everyone else out of the house.
"Please watch Naruto," Kakashi said. Tsunami nodded.
"But what about you?" She asked.
"I'm fine. Aira cleared me yesterday," Kakashi said.
"Yep! His body was in pretty good condition, considering the fact that he totally ignored me when I told him to rest for a week," I said, glaring at him. He smiled and took a step back nervously.
"Well, everyone let's go!" Tazuna said happily. The bridge was nearly done, and he wanted to finish it by the end of the week.
"W- What happened?!" Tazuna yelled once we reach the bridge, bodies strewn along the path and broken wood everywhere.
"Kakashi they're here," I said, fear slowly mounting in my chest as I pulled out my katana. Sasuke and Sakura tensed up next to me, and Kakashi glared off down the bridge where Tazuna's slain co-workers lay.
Before soon the bridge was slowly covered in mist...
Rest in results!(Really, there is something there)
"Sasuke, Aira, Sakura!" Kakashi said. Kakashi stood in the back of the group, protecting Tazuna's back, while I protected the front, and Sakura and Sasuke the sides.
"Kakashi we were right... He really is alive," I hissed.
"Sorry for the wait, Kakashi," We heard. Zabuza's voice seemed to be coming from everywhere. "And I see your still with those brats, and the girl... He's shaking again... Poor kid," Zabuza said. Sasuke smirked as seven Zabuza's appear around us.
"But it isn't in fear," He said. "I'm shaking from excitement."
"Do it, Sasuke," Kakashi said, his visible eye smiling. Sasuke's smirk grew as he darted around, destroying all the water clones.
"Oh? He saw through the water clones. That brat has grown," Zabuza said, stepping out of the mist, along with the boy with the mask. "It looks like a rival has appeared, hey, Haku?" Zabuza said.
"It does indeed," Haku said from behind his mask.
I glance from Zabuza to Haku. From what I could feel, there wasn't anything emanating from Haku that told me that he could kill someone. It was all coming from Zabuza.
The demon of the mist indeed... I just hope we can nail both of them...
