It was amazing really, how Cassandra lied so easily to her friends about the hour she spent with Draco. How easily she could tell them it was hell, when the truth was that she hadn’t had more fun in a long time, how easily she could tell them Draco was a prat and she still couldn’t stand him despite the fact that every time she thought about him her stomach erupted in butterflies. Every time she passed Draco it the hallways she had to turn her head from her friends, because she simply couldn’t help the smiles that crept onto her face.
It was Saturday now, and Cassi decided to indulge in the rather sunny day on Terry’s suggestion. He was acting a bit odd, being much quieter than usual, and looking at everything but her. She simply brushed it off as him being worried about homework. They were heading to a rock by the lake their clique usually hung out on when the weather was nice. They smiled and waved as they passed Harry Potter and his friends at an old beach tree, they were far from friends, but they were alright with each other, Hermione had more than once helped Cassandra with her homework.
As Cassi climbed onto the large flat rock she caught a group of Slytherins out of the corner of her eye. She tried her best not to look, but her eyes fallowed them, Crabbe, Goyle, and Pansy were fallowing behind Draco as usual. As she watched, Draco turned his head slightly and smiled at her. None of his group, or Terry had seen it, and Draco turned going to sit under a tree a good fifteen feet away from Cassi and Terry.
When she looked back to Terry he was just sitting down next to her, he looked at her for as moment, his eyes squinted against the sun, and then down at the rock. “Do you fancy him?” Terry asked flatly, Cassi was a little taken aback; Terry wasn’t usually someone to be bold. “Who?” Cassandra asked cocking her head to the side a bit, honestly confused, her common sense seeming to fail her at the moment. Terry motioned to the group of Slytherins, “Malfoy.”
“What? No.” Cassandra said shaking her head a bit; she hated lying, “Why?” She asked, doing her best to sound truly curious. “No reason really.” Terry shrugged looking over towards Draco, he was staring at a bird, his jaw muscles twitching slightly. It made Terry wonder if he was listening. Turning back to Cassi he took a deep breath. “Well actually… I was wondering if maybe you’d want to go to Hogsmade with me next weekend.” He asked, wincing as if expecting to be hit.
Cassandra had to try quite hard to keep her jaw from dropping and began to play with the tips of her hair. “I go to Hogsmade with you every time.” She said simply, pretending to not understand his invitation. “I know, but maybe this time we could go just me and you, like a date.” He said, seeming to choke slightly at the last word. Cassi took a few breaths, trying to think of the nicest possible way to say no. “Terry.” She sighed looking down at the rocks. “I-” She began, but Terry cut her off, he was nodding. “Ok, you don’t have to give me a long drawn out rejection. A simple one works just as well.” He said as he stood and began to head back up to the castle. She called out to him, but he didn’t even turn to look at her, she considered fallowing him, but what would she say?
She buried her face in her hands and just thought. She felt horrible, how could she have turned him down? She shook her head rather violently before getting up herself. She didn’t bother to turn to look at Draco, she was close to tears, and shaking slightly. She just walked, unsure of where her feet were taking her until she reached a not so secret passage behind a tapestry and leaned against the wall, sliding down it until she was sitting.
Terry had done so much for her over the years, she should have given him a chance, and knowing her friends, the moment they found out they would either stop talking to her, or chew her out for it. She buried her face in her hands again and just sat there for a while, letting hot tears soak her face and hands. She shouldn’t feel so guilty, but then it wasn’t just rejecting Terry that she was feeling guilty about, it was lying to all of them every day as well.
She hadn’t heard to footsteps, and didn’t realize anyone was in the pass with her until a chilly pair of hands wrapped themselves around her wrists and pulled her hands from her face; she let her eyes drift up to meet a pair of silver eyes. Great. This was just how she wanted Draco to see her, he probably thought she was a big baby now. What happened next she really couldn’t have expected, not from Draco. He sat next to her and gently pulled her into his lap, not saying anything, and stroked her hair.
With him there it didn’t take long for her to collect herself; she sniffed rather loudly and wiped her tears away with the sleeve of her cloak. “Uhm thanks.” She choked out feebly, not knowing what else to say, he just sort of stared at her for a bit, it was impossible to read his expression. He looked down, and she fallowed his eyes, realizing she was still on his lap and half way jumped, half way fell onto the stone floor in front of him. She saw the corner of his lips twitch slightly and blushed. “Is something wrong?” She asked as she adjusted herself a bit, getting as comfortable as she could on a stone floor. He looked up at her for a second before shaking his head a bit.
They sat there in silence for a while, it was a bit awkward, but Cassi couldn’t bring herself to leave. It felt like they were there for an eternity before Draco finally spoke. “Were you lying when you told Terry you don’t fancy me?” He asked in a would be casual sort of way. Cassandra cleared her throat a bit and nodded, “Yes.” She said timidly, looking up at the ceiling, she didn’t think she could imagine a more awkward moment. She wouldn’t look at him as she fidgeted with her sleeve and resisting the very strong urge to hide, so it was a bit of a shock when she felt his hand on her neck, it actually made her jump.
She felt herself blush and looked back at Draco ready to babble stupidly, but didn’t get the chance. Her eyes widened further than she thought they could go as his lips collided with hers. It was nothing like she had imagined it would be, his kiss was aggressive and her insides seemed to melt rather than jump around like she thought they would. It wasn’t a sweet little romantic kiss, but she seemed to prefer this way. It was a short kiss really, she hadn’t even had time to react and kiss back. When he pulled away she realized her eyes were sill as big as saucers. He looked at her for a minute, almost as if examining her for a reaction, but she still sat there, unmoving, and staring at him like he had three eyes.
As Draco began to grow nervous wondering if he should have waited to kiss her he saw her face finally relax, though he still couldn’t really read her. She felt as if she were coming out of shock, there were really no thoughts in her head as she sat there, and before she even realized she had moved she found her lips on his again.
