She watched Shikamaru as he gently pressed the tips of his fingers together trying to think of a way to beat her. The only thing that stopped her from attacking him then and winning was curiosity. All she had been doing was darting through the trees attacking him with flying weapons so far and he was already struggling. It had been fun to watch the weapons that he hadn’t caught with his shadow fly past his head, but he had always dodged them so it had been kind of pointless. But she had just been throwing them and he had been using up chakra to catch them, which could work to her advantage. She put her fingers together imitating Shikamaru and closed her eyes after a while she opened them with a new idea; it could work to her advantage nicely. She watched him for a while until he opened his eyes too, she could see that he had made up a plan just like she had. She had overheard Asuma saying that when he did this he had thought out the next ten moves unless in his head he had beaten her before that. Well whatever he had thought out she had to presume that it had included her staying up in the braches doing what she had been doing so far.
So, just to mess up his plan, she jumped out of the trees landing neatly in front of him. She could see by the shocked look in his eyes that he had been betting on her staying in the trees. But that was as far as her plan had gone too; she knew that she had used up less chakra but it was quite possible that he still had more chakra then her. That was the first time that Shikamaru had been able to see his attacker clearly, by his judgment she was about a year younger then he was, she was about an inch shorter then him and her hair was the same colour as his but it was a heap messier, free and went down to her elbows. She moved her head closer to him and stared into his eyes as if trying to work something out, she instantly drew back and looked as if she had made a decision about him, but he didn’t know what it was. She was about to jump back into the trees and put the distance that had stopped him from using his shadow imitation, but he caught her a moment before she left the ground. She managed to turn her head and slightly shuffle her feet around to face him which was more then anyone had ever been able to do. Once facing him she stuck her tongue out in a gesture of disobedience then slouched leaning slightly on one leg and waited to see what he would do. He shook his head and responded like she thought he would.
“Look you attacked me first so this was all self defence and now since I don’t know who you are I’m going to have to take you to someone else to decide what to do with you.” He was speaking slow and clearly in a friendly tone as if talking to a child, which from her behaviour so far was how he thought she should be treated. She obviously picked up the tone in his voice because she imitated it when she was talking back to him.
“That’s ok I understand, I know that children like yourself always have to report back to your parents before doing anything, but you are being a little painful here so do you think that you could just let me go while we waited for a grown up to come?” The first response that she got to this was a snarl but when she laughed at him he calmed himself down and responded.
“Ok you don’t seem to be able to support a conversation so lets try some questions. What’s you name?” She hesitated and glanced around; she knew there was no way out so she might as wall entertain herself while here.
“I’m fine with conversations, but perhaps I made it too sophisticated for you to understand. My name is Leiko Aemi.” He was about to argue with her on the first point she had made but then he realised that she had actually told him her name, which he hadn’t expected. His mind instantly translated it, arrogant honest child, well the first part certainly seemed to suit her and because she had answered the question maybe she was honest. He decided to try again with the questioning, he couldn’t move from here until someone came which shouldn’t take too long since he was out with his team.
“Where are you from?” After he said it he realised that his teeth were still ground together from her last response and she smiled wickedly to show that she had noticed how much her comment had annoyed him.
“I haven’t the foggiest clue. I don’t even know where I am.” Well he could tell that she was really being honest. She glanced around as if waiting for someone to come, which was what he was doing.
“Is someone coming here for you?” She looked shocked at him for a moment then realised that he was referring to her looking around.
“Oh no. I was just wondering where your friends were going to turn up. Surely they know that it isn’t safe for people like you to wander around alone.” He was going to yell at her for that but then he realised that once again she had just given him a more interesting question to ask.
“So what are you doing in the Leaf Village?” Once again she looked shocked and if he hadn’t been suddenly so worried about her, he would have been happy that he had got the better of her. But she quickly changed the look to a pleasantly surprised look.
“Oh so that’s where I am. Well I guess that works.” Shikamaru looked at her trying to work out whether she was telling the truth or not then he shook it off deciding that it was too much effort, he would just leave it up to someone else.
“So let me get this straight. You don’t know where you’re from, you have no reason to be here, and you didn’t even know where you are until I told you?” She bit her cheek thinking over the three things in that question. Then she nodded her head decisively
“ Yep got it in one, or was that two, or three. Well anyway you did better then I thought you would, maybe you are smarter then a glass of water.” This was a more obvious insult then the others she had said but she was getting sick of standing there, it really was pointless, Shikamaru picked up on this instantly.
“Look it’s not my fault that you decided to come here without permission, it’s not my fault that you attacked me, and it’s not my fault that I have to hold you here until someone a higher level then me comes.” She shook her head briefly before staring at him and speaking with the same sharp tongue that he had used.
“No. But it’s not my fault that I have no idea how to get permission or that I even need permission, it’s not my fault that I thought you were a threat, and it’s certainly not my fault that you live in a village where you have to abide by those kind of rules.” As she talked she was marking off on her fingers the points that he had made, he was about to argue back every one of those points when he realised that her stance had shifted into a fighting stance when his stance hadn’t changed, and her hands were moving at her will. He hadn’t been able to concentrate on one thing for long enough to get anywhere she could so easily shift his concentration it was scary. He let out a sigh of relief when he saw his sensei through the leaves and beckoned Asuma to the ground where they were. Asuma looked at Leiko and gently took her by the arm at the same moment Shikamaru dropped his shadow though he was pretty sure that if she had really wanted to leave she could have done it anyway. Shikamaru watched Leiko’s head drop as if she had been defeated and was surprised by how unnatural it looked on her and how much he wished she would smile again. He watched as Asuma began to ask her questions without her even acknowledging that she had heard them. Asuma turned to Shikamaru turning Leiko with him.
“Can this girl even speak?” Leiko looked up and looked as though she was silently begging him not to tell, they were enemies, she had attacked him. But even with this thought in his mind he had to look away to answer his Sensei, not sure if he could handle the betrayed look in her eyes or even worse the look of defeat.
“Yes she spoke to me. Her name is Leiko Aemi, she doesn’t know where she is from and she didn’t even know where she was until I told her.” Asuma nodded and then headed off for the Hokage’s office expecting Shikamaru to follow, and he did with only the slightest hesitation. Once in the office the Hokage asked for everything she had said and Shikamaru answered cutting out all the insults she had added, no one else noticed or even thought that he might have skipped anything out but he saw Leiko, through the hair that had fallen around her face, smile. She was put in a flat temporarily but the doors and windows were to be constantly locked so that they knew she was there at all times, and only Asuma, the Hokage and Shikamaru were allowed to see her. The only reason that the Hokage had added Shikamaru to that list was because he had argued that he was the only one she would talk to, silently adding past tense to that sentence unsure if she would be willing to talk to him anymore. He lingered in her flat after the others had left hoping to get the chance to talk to her which of course he did since she could leave the room. She tried to ignore him for a while but it didn’t work with him following her around leaning lazily against the wall whenever she stopped to do something. Eventually she turned suddenly and he ran straight into her before falling back against the wall.
“Is there a reason that you’re following me around like a love sick puppy?” That got him, he reacted like any male his age would, he recoiled as if she had punched him and stood up straight in front of her.
“I’m nothing like a love sick puppy.” He practically spat out the words and she just shrugged as if his saying it meant nothing.
“Is there a reason that you’re following me around?” Shikamaru realised that she had only taken the last bit off and he was pretty sure that she added it in her head but he decided to let it drop.
“Yes there is a reason. I wanted to know if you were still talking to me and since you are I’ll be back tomorrow to do something with you.”
“Great.” She mumbled sarcastically but as soon as he shut the door behind him she smiled.
The next day he came back bringing a shogi bored to play with her, she looked at it sceptically when he entered the room but he answered her question before she could ask
“We need something to do and I’m guessing that you don’t really want to talk since last time you told me something I told it all straight to some one else.” She smirked and he conceded
“ok not everything but still. And since there isn’t much in this room to do I thought I’d bring this.” He held up the board, she gestured at the table and he put it down then sat down and set up the game. She sat down and stared at the board before looking up at him and smiling her evil smile.
“What do I get If I win?” he looked up at her and recognised the smile.
“What do you mean?” he asked cautiously.
“Well in a battle if you win you get to live, so if I win I have to get something.” She looked very confident and that worried Shikamaru but he couldn’t resist.
“Deal, so if you win what do you get?”
“A kiss.” Shikamaru bit the inside of his cheek and muttered the response like he knew he was meant to.
“I guess I did already agree didn’t I?” A huge grin crossed her face as she nodded and they began to play. Half way through Shikamaru paused and looked up at her again.
“This is a serious amateur game right?” Leiko looked up confused that that would affect the game at all, but Shikamaru looked happy at her response. They played for a while and it was obvious that Leiko was trying her hardest but she was no match for Shikamaru and soon they could both tell that in the next move it would be mate and Leiko would have to admit defeat. Then Shikamaru moved a completely different piece halfway across the bored, she looked up at him confused
“That move is illegal.” She went to move the piece back but Shikamaru caught her hand.
“In a serious amateur game a player who makes an illegal move loses immediately.” He said directly quoting the rules and it took Leiko a moment to understand before she looked up happily
“That means I win, and I get a kiss.” Shikamaru laughed at how happy she looked and then pulled her up from the table after standing up himself. He pulled her close and kissed her and when she eventually pulled back he brushed some of her hair out of her face.
“You know in a battle the winner lives and the other person doesn’t so you should get the kiss and I shouldn’t.” She shrugged happily
“I wouldn’t be able to kill you in battle anyway.” Then she leaned back towards him and just stood there as he hugged her.
She ended up talking to everyone after quite a bit of badgering from Shikamaru and she moved into the village and joined the academy, which worked well until she was put in Shikamaru’s squad. They constantly argue but make the best team there is when they eventual agree.
