I walked home from the academy late as usual, it wasn’t quite dark yet and that was the time that I had to be home by, but it was getting there. I heard a yelp coming from the park, it sounded like a tortured dog so I walked closer to the park. There was a group of little boy’s fiddling with something then they parted enough for me to see what they were doing, I had guessed it was a dog but as soon as I saw it I knew that it was Akamaru, Kiba’s dog. I was going to go and help Akamaru but that might mean seeing Kiba and I really didn’t want to do that, well I really didn’t want him to see me. But then Akamaru let out another yelp of pain and I ran over to help him
“What do you brats think you’re doing?!” I shoved them to the ground and they scattered running of throughout the dark. I didn’t pay much attention to them I was concentrating on finding out whether Akamaru was ok, I picked him up and cradled him then I heard the voice that I was dreading.
“Is he ok?” I turned and faced Kiba who was standing about an inch away from my face I nod, it’s was the slightest gesture but he seemed to catch it. I held Akamaru out to Kiba who gives him a brief look and then laughs.
“You’re shy? You didn’t seem that shy when you were screaming at those boys.” I stared up at him, worried.
“You saw that?” He just laughed harder.
“More like heard it; I came over to make sure no one was getting killed.” I blush and self consciously turn away so that he can’t see but I was still sure that he knew why I turned and he just laughed again.
“So what’s your name? I haven’t seen you around before.” I turned and began shouting at him as a reaction.
“You haven’t seen me before? No of course not, I’ve only been in your class every single year since we started at the academy, why should you know me? But don’t you dare think that I’ll bother telling you my name again, it would be useless you’ll just have forgotten it by tomorrow” Then both him and Akamaru started laughing, they both sounded very alike, whether Akamaru laughed like a human or Kiba laughed like a dog it was still the same. I caught myself before yelling again, remembering who I was talking to, and retreated back to my usual self conscious state for when I was around Kiba. Then I noticed that it was dark and I thanked the lord for an excuse to cut this meeting short. I began running through the park after muttering and excuse. But he didn’t let it go that easy he caught me just before I got out of the park and held my arm so I couldn’t leave.
“Name? I promise after a speech like that I won’t forget it.” I pulled my arm out of his grip and once I was out of the park I shouted over my shoulder in response.
“Kaiyo.” Then I ran home and hoped that by tomorrow he would have forgotten about it not that it really mattered since tomorrow was the last day of the academy before we got set into groups.
The next day I ran into school and entered the classroom late, I muttered an apology to the Sensei, as I usually did, and then I glanced up to the back of the classroom where Kiba was usually sleeping on his desk, as I always did. He had looked up as soon as I had entered the classroom and he caught my glance before I dropped his gaze and stumbled over to my desk. A few of my friends asked if there was something wrong and I waved them off convincing myself that I had imagined it. By the time we were let outside I was back to my normal self, arguing with the Sensei when he talked and talking to my friends when he wasn’t. At lunch my friends started with their usual conversation about how good Sasuke looked that day, then they eventually turned their attention to me and asked whom I liked.
“The same person that I’ve liked since you guys started liking Sasuke.” Then a voice came from over my shoulder and if I hadn’t recognized it then the bark that Akamaru added would have told me.
“And who would that be?” I turned, blushing worse then ever and without the darkness to hide in, and just incase he hadn’t picked up the answer from that there was always my friends behind me who had started giggling like hyenas. He smirked confidently then turned, but before he took a step away Akamaru jumped down and ran over to me sitting at my feet patiently waiting for me to pick him up. I didn’t think, which was usually normal for me, I just bent down and picked him up cuddling him close to my chest. When I saw Kiba taking a step closer to me I hide my face in Akamaru’s fur, but I could still feel Kiba’s gaze on me. When I eventually looked up Kiba was still looking at me, he slowly held his hand out for Akamaru and I handed him back giving him one last stroke after he was in Kiba’s arms. In this movement my hand had also brushed against Kiba’s chest so I drew it back suddenly stumbling back a step while stuttering an apology. He and Akamaru just laughed again and Kiba turned and walked off before my friends circled around me asking what that had been about. It took me a few hundred attempts before they would even listen to me about it meaning nothing then a few more hundred before they believed me.
By that time we were called back into class to be set into groups of three and four, ninja’s usually worked in groups of three but the number didn’t work this year so there was going to be one group of four. It would have worked out nicely into groups of three but then Naruto had to do something noble and get through. I sat with my friends fingers crossed hoping to get in each others group but I knew that they were really hoping to get in Sasuke’s group just like I was hoping to get in Kiba’s group. But when Kiba’s name was called out followed by mine I instantly regretted it, I really hadn’t thought this through. I glanced up to the back of the room where he was and saw him smiling down at me, I wasn’t sure if I could live through it. I turned back round and tried to remember who else I had been put in a group with; I asked a friend when my mind drew a blank.
“You’re in the group of four with Hinata, Shinto and Kiba.” She put special emphasis on the last name and all of my friends looked to see my reaction, I just blushed and focused hard on the corner of my table.
We were told to wait outside for our sensei to come to take us on our first mission, I stood talking quietly to Hinata fully aware that Kiba hadn’t taken his eyes off me since we left the classroom. When our Sensei got there I was relieved, I liked talking to Hinata, she was my friend but I really wasn’t myself when I had Kiba staring at me. She turned introduced herself as Kurenai, and then told us a bit about the mission we were going on that day.
“We will be going on a mission outside the city, it shouldn’t be that hard but I didn’t want to pick a challenging one to see what you could do.” Then she led us outside the town walls. It was the first time I had been outside the town and even though Kiba wqas there I couldn’t help it they went down the path as I bounded through the treetops on either side of them, after about three steps Akamaru joined me and shortly after him, Kiba. But even that didn’t stop me it was so fun to jump just out of Kiba’s reach with Akamaru beside me. Then Kurenai stopped and I jumped down besides her still wishing I could be flying through the trees, Kiba landed next to me doubled over panting, then Akamaru jumped down on his back and he collapsed. Kurenai looked over me, laughing at Kiba, Kiba, collapsed on the ground shaking his fist at me, Hinata, who had a slight smile hidden behind her hand, and Shinto who was standing perfectly still as if nothing was happening. She mumbled something about an interesting group then spoke to us.
“I’m going to scout around and look for our destination, please stay on the path.” I managed a nod then I stepped on Kiba’s back my foot just beside Akamaru to show that he wasn’t going anywhere. Kurenai gave me a doubtful look before jumping into the trees immediately invisible. I took my foot off Kiba, suddenly remembering who he was, and apologized sounding pretty much like Hinata did when she talked to Naruto. Then I slunk over to Hinata and began talking quietly with her and Shinto while Kiba caught his breath then circled us in the trees with Akamaru.
It was a while before we heard anything but when noise came it was a rustling in the bushes from the wrong side, Kiba and Akamaru jumped down from the tree and positioned themselves between the noise and Hinata Shinto and me. Hinata moved one of her legs back slightly to use soft fist fighting, and anyone who recognized that would probably avoid her. Shinto took a fighting stance and bugs began to crawl around him, and I just stood there waiting to see what was going to happen. So I guess I was the obvious victim but that didn’t occur to me until the attacker dropped down behind me and threw a shurikan at me, I stood frozen and it wasn’t until Kiba landed between me and the shurikan that it even occurred to me that I should move.
“What on earth are you doing?” I screamed at Kiba as I pushed him to the ground following him down; we only narrowly avoided the attack. I jumped back up once it had passed and prepared to fight back, Kiba stood up after realizing what had happened. Before I got a chance to attack back our Sensei jumped down from the tree and knocked him out easily. She looked up at us before looking back down at him.
“I think that will do for today, do you think you can make it back to the village? I have to take this guy to the Hokage.” It was clear that she wasn’t really asking us because before any of us could respond to her she had disappeared. With out being able to fight the guy who had attacked me I turned and vented me anger on Kiba and Hinata and Shinto began walking back.
“You know I am a ninja too I am perfectly capable of protecting myself, I don’t need your help!” He looked at me startled for a moment then replied.
“Well it didn’t look like you were going to even dodge so I had to do something.” I wasn’t going to dodge and if it wasn’t for him I would have been hit, but I wasn’t going to tell him that, it would kind of ruin my angry rant. Just because I was a dithering idiot around him didn’t mean that I was always like that. I was about to start yelling at him again but Akamaru jumped to his side and Kiba dropped on all fours too in their fighting stance, and it was directed at me. They both growled at me so I reacted as usual before I thought, I dropped to the ground so we were eye-to-eye, flipped my long brown hair from over my face looking viciously over at them and hissed back. Akamaru jumped back and hide behind Kiba who stood up looking at me approvingly
“Feisty aren’t you.” He smiled and then walked away following Shinto and Hinata, I ran after them, running straight past Kiba and settled back to a walk when I caught up to Hinata who was silently giggling so I presumed she had seen what had happened. I blushed and turned away so that she couldn’t see me, I managed to avoid Kiba the whole way back to the village but once we got through the gate he stopped me then waited for the others to go out of ear shot. I stood patiently, blushing just because he was that close to me; luckily it was dark so I hoped he wouldn’t notice. He finally turned to me and began to speak which was worse because it meant that he was looking at me.
“I only went in front of you back there because you were scared and I was worried that you weren’t going to do anything.”
“I wasn’t scar-”
“Don’t try lying I can smell it on you. You were even scared when I pretended to attack you.”
“I’m not scared of you.”
“Then why do you stutter almost every time you talk to me?” I blushed furiously under his gaze and he was far too perceptive to not know what that meant. He laughed at me again.
“If that’s what you do when I’m just talking to you then what on Earth would you do if I kissed you?” I felt my jaw drop and my eyes grew wider then I would have thought possible. Kiba turned and walked away, before I could remember how to change my facial expression, laughing at my reaction. I went home that night dreading what the next day would be like, then it occurred to me that I was going to have to spend every day for probably over a year with him. The only way that I managed to fall asleep was when I finally convinced myself to take it one day at a time.
The next day I put my hair into a ponytail remembering how it had got in my face and eyes when I had hissed at Kiba, my fringe wouldn’t quite stay in place but it was better then having all my hair in my face I decided as I tried to brush it behind my ear. I had taken as much time as I could to get to the meeting spot worried that if I was early I would be stuck there alone with Kiba, but when I got there Kiba was the only one waiting there. I was just thinking about leaving and coming back when I was sure that others would be there but Kiba was already in front of me.
“You look nice with your hair up, you have a pretty face.” He brushed the side of my face with the back of his hand and I lent my head towards it before common sense kicked in and he drew his hand back as I stepped backwards. He laughed at me again and leaned back against a tree, his calm pose somehow really annoyed me, so I told him so.
“I can’t believe you, you just do that because you think girls reaction’s to you are funny?” He shrugged and stepped closer to me again.
“Not any girl’s your reaction is the best. That and I just plain like you.” I stumbled back a little further then planted my feet as he took a few more steps toward me.
“So we’re friends and you think that fact that I have a crush on you is funny?” Kiba took one more step towards me so that I could feel his breath on my forehead. I looked up at him as he answered me.
“No.” I’m sure that I looked a little confused but that didn’t even show half of what I was feeling.
“So we’re not friends?” He raised my chin again and brush his lips against mine letting go and stepping back just before Hinata came running up apologizing for begin late, close behind her was Shinto and then Kurenai just appeared. Kiba leaned towards me for a moment and muttered so that no one else could hear.
“Does that answer your question?” I nodded slightly then we did the mission as was expected of us and we have been working together happily in a team for over a year. There have been rumors about us going out spreading but neither of us has told anyone that they’re true so they’re still spreading as rumors.
