The next day at lunch, Alex sat quietly, picking at his so-called sandwhich. Jack and Rian were talking amongst themselves, neither of them noticing the unusual silence coming from Alex.
"Well, what do you think Alex?" Rian asked, turning towards Alex.
"I think I want to die," Alex thought. Since the day before when he reunited with Kendyl, he couldn't stop thinking about her. It wasn't a constant thought of the good things about her, but more like the nagging reminder that he was in for a long, painful ride. Fingers snapped in his face and he looked up from his sandwhich.
"Are you okay?" Rian asked.
"Yeah," Jack said. "You've been kind of quiet."
Alex shrugged and looked back down at his plate. He couldn't say he was okay when quite obviously he wasn't. But he didn't see the need in filling the guys in with the history lesson that was him and Kendyl Turman-now-Merrick.
"Just, a long day," he huffed and rested his head on the table top. Rian and Jack looked at each other with the same face of concern.
"Tell us," Jack commanded.
Alex lifted his head for a second and glanced at them with crooked eyebrows. "No."
"Now," Rian said sternly.
Alex repeated himself, "No."
"Alex would you just-"
"No!" his head shot up. "Now will you please just drop it?" He layed his head back down, closed his eyes and reopened them quickly. Ever since he'd seen her face again, it was all he could see.
"Gee," Jack said. "Someone hasn't gotten any action in a while."
"Jack," Alex said with a warning tone. "If you don't shut the hell up, I will pumble you until your last breath."
"You wouldn't," Jack teased.
Alex lifted his head again. "And just why wouldn't I?"
"Because if you did you wouldn't have a best friend anymore," Jack said with confidence.
"I have Rian," Alex said, pointing to the innocent bystander.
Rian scoffed. "Well thanks. It's nice to know I'm the backup."
Alex huffed and threw his plate into the nearest garbage can. "I don't have the patience to sit here and deal with this." He stood up, ignoring the talk coming from Jack and Rian, and began to walk for his car. He didn't have to stay in school. It was his senior year and according to him school was overrated and needed to be taken lightly, if taken at all. He made his way to the parking lot unnoticed and was about to cross the road to find his car when he noticed two people he did not want to see at that moment.
"Hey Alex!" Zack Merrick called.
Alex stopped trodding and became dizzy and lightheaded at the sight of the dangerous grin playing on Kendyl's mouth as she trailed behind Zack. He waved and continued on his way, ignoring the stare he was receiving from Kendyl.
She watched him walk quickly and looked up at Zack as he continued to the school. "Hey, I'll be right back. I need to go talk to him about something."
Zack looked at Kendyl, then at Alex, then back at her. "Alright. I'll be right through those doors whenever you're done."
She nodded and followed Alex.
"Oh, and Kendyl," Zack called after her. She turned around and rose her eyebrows. "Whenever you do get back, how about filling me in on what's going on?"
She rocked her head from side to side. "Maybe." She turned back around and found Alex sitting in his car with his head on the wheel. She could see his lips moving, meaning he was either talking to himself out of insanity, or singing a song to calm himself down, something she knew was a habit of his. By studying the movement of his lips, she made a song out, "Here's Your Letter".
Alex was finally able to close his eyes without seeing Kendyl's haunting face. He took deep breaths in and out as he sang quietly to himself. "Here's a letter for you but the words get confused and the conversation dies. Apologize for the past. Talk some shit take it back. Are we cursed to this life?"
He looked out the window and froze when he spotted Kendyl leaning against the car parked next to his. It was like a horror movie; she was the monster and he was the helpless victim. He quickly cranked the car and hoped to put it into drive fast enough so she wouldn't have time to do anything. As he was about to drive away, he looked at her once more and she had her hands on his door below his window. Her eyes seemed to beg him to stay.
"Open up," she said. Alex hesitated, but eventually put his car back in park and opened the door. Kendyl stepped back to give him room so he could get out. He shut the door behind him and backed a few steps away from her. She smiled slightly and looked at his car that was still roaring.
"You're wasting gas," she said.
"I know," Alex answered quickly. She looked at him with a face that showed no emotion. Alex was going to stay quiet, but broke down at the looks she was casting his way.
"Kendyl, look I apologized yesterday. I meant it! I'm sorry I left you on those terms but I didn't know what else to do! No girlfriend had ever said that to me before so I panicked and ran. I'm sorry! What else do you want from me? My dignity? My pride? What?"
She kept the same emotionless face as she spoke. "Your forgiveness."
Alex was imidiatly dumbfounded. "Huh?"
She looked at her feet to quiet her voice. "I overreacted yesterday. I understand that you were scared; I was too when I said it. I just really thought I felt it, and I thought you'd feel it back. It's okay that you didn't, it's just that you left without a goodbye or anything. I'm sorry for the childish threats I threw at you. Can we just start over and forget what happened between us? I mean, I'll never really forget it, but can we just be normal and be friends?"
Alex's mouth was slightly ajar as he searched for words. He uttered and stumbled on phrases, making Kendyl chuckle quietly. "Can I take that as a yes?"
Alex nodded slowly and Kendyl smiled. "Great. I guess I'll see you after school at your practice then." Alex nodded again and watched in shock as she turned around and left him in the lifeless parking lot.
As soon as her back was to Alex, she rolled her eyes and walked back to Zack with her ever so famous grin plastered on her face. She pulled out her phone and punched in her friend Laura's number to send a text. Laura was in on everything and had absolutely no problem messing with Alex.
"Let the games begin," Kendyl wrote and pressed send.
she's a lady and ladies shouldn't be messed with.
