"Let's get going, then." Cough, cough.
You smiled. "Mm-hmm."
"So, kid," Said Asuma, dropping his cigarette butt on the floor and stamping it out, "What brings you here?"
"I kinda just explained to the Jounins, do I have to do it again?" You asked, throwing him a pleading look.
"Nah, I'll just ask them later," he said, pulling a second cigarette.
Hayate coughed pointedly at Asuma. The smoker shot him an innocent look, and he let out a resigned sigh, taking a couple of steps away from said walking tar-pit and fanning some of the smoke away.
"I should show you around," Hayate said to you, putting his hand on your shoulder and half-dragging you out of the cloud.
"Yeah, that'd be nice," You said, ignoring the imploring look form Asuma, "Kotetsu didn't really say much." You smiled slightly. "He seemed to want to be rid of me . . . "
Cough. "I can't think why that'd be."
Asuma grinned. "It that's your idea of flirting, Hayate-kun, you're never gonna get a girl."
Hayate blushed bright red but pretended to ignore him.
Asuma's grin widened. "You're a swordsman, she's a swordswoman. Match made in heaven, I say."
"What's that meant to mean?" You snapped at him, grinning nonetheless.
Asuma tapped the side of his nose. "Work it out, kid, work it out." He glanced down at his watch. "Ah, sh~ . . . crud, I should be taking my little Genins on a mission. See you two kids around!"
And with that, he was gone, leaving you, Hayate and a suspicious lingering smell of smoke.
"Shall we, umm, go, then?" Hayate asked you.
"Yeah, sure. Go . . . where?"
He laughed, but the laugh quickly turned into a coughing fit. You stepped up next to him, putting one hand on his back and leaving it there until he stopped.
"I was thinking of-" Cough, cough "-just showing you around. I'll tell you where all the important places are, so you'll, umm, know where to go."
You nodded your thanks and set off at a slow walk around the village. Hayate walked you to the food district, and showed you around a few clothes shops, but you eventually ended up outside a weapon shop.
"I just need to pick something up for my father, if you don't mind," Said Hayate, stifling a cough and stepping in to the shop.
"S-sure!" You called after him. After a moment's contemplation, you followed him inside.
"Hey, Gekkou-san!" You heard the shop's owner call, "I've got that sword you ordered! Who's your friend?"
Hayate looked round, and beckoned you over to the counter. "You're a swordswoman, right?" He asked.
"Yeah," You said, busy inspecting a broadsword that was hung above the counter.
"That's-" Cough "-good. I am to."
You smiled slightly. "I wondered what Naruto-kun was poking me with on the coach."
Hayate laughed at you and grabbed your arm, guiding you in to what looked like a storeroom behind the counter.
"Ahh, Gekkou-san, you finally came in here," Said the owner, who was hunched over something in the corner. "You'd better check this out. I had it ordered specially."
"Thanks, Kara-sama," Said Hayate, coughing into his hand and walking over to inspect whatever it was this 'Kara' had been working on. You followed him, out of instinct.
"My father ordered this a few weeks ago," Explained Hayate, picking up a beautiful katana and holding it up to the light, looking along the blade and touching the point against his finger. "He always liked katanas. Where did you, umm, order this from?" The second part of this was directed at Kara.
"Iwa," He said, "Ordered it from the Saitous over there. Best sword maker around, that Saitou Kaida."
Hayate looked over at you. "Aren't you a Saitou, Mai-san?" He asked, seemingly slightly shocked.
You nodded. "Yeah. Kaida's my father. Arrogant piece of~" You stopped, coming to your senses and nodding slowly.
Kara was trying to hold in laughter. "I heard as much," He grinned, "But he makes a damn good sword, so he's forgiven."
You shot Kara a dark stare before turning to Hayate. "Can I have a look at that?" You asked him. He nodded and handed you the sword.
Definitely your father's handiwork. It had his traditional dagger motif on the hilt, and - yes, if you looked closely enough - the kanji for Saitou was carved into the blade, just along from the tip.
"Looks like he actually got off his ass and worked on this one!" You said incredulously, handing the katana back to Hayate who sheathed it and strapped it to his back.
"Thanks, Kara-sama," He said, smiling and walking out of the storeroom, into the main shop.
Kara smiled a slightly predatorial smile. "If you don't mind, I'd love to talk swords with you some timeMai, is it?"
"I . . . I think I'm gonna be kinda busy while I'm here . . ." You muttered, "And I've kinda gotta go, I have to be somewhere in a minute . . ."
He smiled sadly. "You're a terrible liar, child."
You gave him a hollow smile and backed out of the room, walking into Hayate's back in the process.
Cough. "You alright? You look kinda, umm, shaken." He asked, walking out of the store and back into the sunlight.
"H-he wanted to meet up with me . . ." You said carefully, not wanting to offend anyone.
"Don't worry, he's like that with everyone." Smiled Hayate. "I'd better show you where your apartment is, umm, before it gets too dark."
You nodded. "Thanks a bunch, Hayate-san."
He coughed again, but managed to choke out a 'No problem, Mai-san'.
Hayate led you out of the shopping districts and over to a little park, complete with koi pond. "Your apartment's one of those, over there" He said, pointing at a tall building on the other side of the grassy expanse.
"They look like nice places," You grinned, "And this park is so sweet!"
Hayate nodded. "Yeah, I like coming here when I'm stressed . . ." He said quietly, looking around. "Anyway, let's go." Cough.
"Mmm."
You walked along the gravel path that wound through the park, past the pond and through a little cluster of saplings. It really was a beautiful place.
"Here," Said Hayate, gesturing to a bamboo door in the side of the building. "You go in there and-" Cough "-turn left at the top of the first staircase. Room seventeen. I've got your key somewhere . . ."
The dark-haired man reached into one of the many pockets on a shinobi uniform and pulled out a key, complete with panda key ring. You raised an eyebrow at that, but took the key and thanked him, stepping into the cool air of the apartment building.
I like it!!
I don't like it.
Yay!!
Nay...
Concrit, then??
Shoot.
