Chapter 1
Chapter theme song:
A Little Less The Sixteen Candles
Fall Out Boy
I woke up in a daze. I rolled over on my side looking at my alarm clock. 3:41 it read. I rubbed my eyes and tried to go back to sleep. After about five more minutes I gave up. I got up out of bed and slowly walked down the stairs to the kitchen. I didn’t turn on the light, as I thought, I would be able to see. Of course to my luck, I managed to trip over a book my completely evil roommate, Angela left on the floor, just like she does with everything else. I fell to the floor, knocking down a vase as I went. It made a huge smash on the tiles. ‘Oh, great, nice going Lacey!’ I thought.
Just as I thought things couldn’t get any worse, my dad and Sarah’s light went on from their rooms.
See, my Dad and Sarah were long-time friends from college and decided to move in together. They have their own rooms though. Don’t get any ideas, they are only friends. They have their own lives. And besides, Sarah, is the mother of my completely evil roommate. And as they say ‘Like mother like daughter’. She is very snobby to me and doesn’t have time for me unless if she needs something. Sounds a lot like Angela. But even though she is a snob and raised a spoilt princess, she also has a son, Alex. You wouldn’t even no that such an angel like him came from a woman like her. He has a perfect smile and gorgeous pale blue eyes. I have always had kind of a crush on him. He is in the room across from me. He was so kind and gentle, even though he is an emo; but emo’s are cool! I still think he is amazing.
So where was I, oh yeah……
My dad was the first to come out holding a book ready to strike. “Who’s there?” He called. Sarah was hiding behind him. My dad flicked on the lights. I shielded my eyes from the bright light, and groaned. Great, I then realised I had a huge bruise on my ankle.
“Wha- Lacey?” Was all my dad said looking concerned. Sarah then pushed him to the side and shrieked. “What on earth are you doing?” Sarah growled looking at all the scattered vase pieces. “My vase!” She shrieked once more. Me and my dad both flinched at the sound of her high-pitched voice. “It was an accid-“ “Sure it was!” She said sarcastically. “You have been trying to make me miserable ever since we met!” My dad looked at me shocked. “Lacey?” He questioned. “Dad, she’s lying! She was the one making me miserable!” I whined. Sarah glared at me with her evil stare. “You can buy me a new one!” She grumbled as she whipped her short, blonde hair. She turned and stomped off to her room.
I rolled my eyes. She always went out of her way to make me feel worse about myself. Oh, how sweet! Yuck! How on earth could my dad meet and be friends with such a creature?
“Dad! I – She – “ I stuttered. What was I supposed to say? ‘Dad, she is a horrible witch and I hate her! Kick her out and her daughter too, but not the imaginary love of my life!’ Or can I? No! I can’t!
“Is there something you want to tell me?” My dad folded his arms, frowning. “It – this – “ I stuttered again. I didn’t know what to say. I looked over towards the stairs and noticed something. Is that, Alex? It was. I saw his head poke back as soon as he realised I was looking at him. I looked back at my dad, he was staring directly at me.
He shook his head, held out his hand and said; “We can talk later, right now we need to get an ice pack, that looks painful.” He said in a more gentle tone.
I took his hand and slowly got up. He helped me over to a chair. He walked over to the freezer and pulled out a freezer pack and handed it to me. “Thanks.” I mumbled. He just nodded slightly and stood there for a moment or two. A strange silence crept up in the room. “So…” I said bored, hoping to start a conversation. “So, I hear there is a big dance coming up at school!” He said excitedly. “Umm, yeah.” “So, anyone in mind who you are going with?” He asked while nudging my arm. I looked over my shoulder. Alex was still there, I think.
My dad was still looking at me, wide eyed. “Uh, I don’t know.” I said, moving a little bit away from my dad. I hope he didn’t notice. Poor thing, he tries to be cool but he just can’t. Sad, really.
“Sorry,” My dad said looking away, a little embarrassed. “I guess, I got a little carried away again.” “That’s ok.” I laughed. “So anyway, how have you been? We haven’t had a lot of time to catch up, you know.” He smiled at me. “Well, that’s just because Sarah keeps tearing us apart.” I mumbled. “Lacey!
“Don’t say things like that! She may be a little cranky at times, but she means well.” “No she doesn’t! She always goes out of her way to make me miserable! I’m glad that stupid vase is broken, even if it were an accident. Are you happy? Have you caught up to me yet or do I have to tell you more things that she does to me?” I cried. I have never said anything like that to him before. He looked shocked. I felt really bad, but I had to tell him. My dad opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by a creaking of the steps. We both looked up at the stairs, it wasn’t Alex this time, but it was Angela. She froze. Busted!
Angela’s eyes were wide open. “I-I came down for…… Cheese.” She fake smiled. It was very obvious. Dad rolled his eyes. “Go back to bed, Angela. You too, Lacey.” As Angela galloped back up the stairs again dad whispered to me in a harsh tone; “We can discuss this tomorrow, young lady.” I didn’t say anything. I just wanted to go somewhere to escape. Not here, not my room because of nosy princess Angela, I guess only my dreams.
As I walked up the stairs I took one last look at my dad. He was sweeping up the pieces of the hideous vase. I finally reached my door and just as I was about to open it I heard a voice, a very pleasant voice. I turned around. “Alex?” “Hey, um, are you ok?” He asked me shyly. I smiled sweetly. “Yeah, I guess. Thanks.” “Don’t worry.” Our eyes met. I stared into his pale blue eyes, while being almost hypnotized. There was a peaceful silence around us as we gazed into each other’s eyes. “That vase was ugly.” He laughed. I giggled. “Night.” He said softly. “Night.” I smiled and looked into his eyes once more and went into my room.
I felt peaceful and calm until… “What was all that about?” Angela questioned me right up in my face. I had such an urge to shove her out of the way. “Nothen’” I simply stated. “Well, it looked more like something to me! And your dad looked really mad, too.” “Well thank you for being so observant, I don’t know how I would have managed without your dictating!” I snared. “Whoa, calm down!” “Can I go to bed now?” I groaned. She sighed and turned out the light. I looked at my clock. It read 3:57 am. A few more hours until I have to get woken up by high pitch screeching of Angela on the karaoke. Oh, goodie!
But, it didn’t take long for me to fall asleep.
Slowly, I went to turn over to my side, but to my luck, I fell off the bed. I quickly got up, now wide-awake. I looked inside my drawers and picked out a stylish tank top and some pants. I looked around once I was fully dressed and done my hair and make up. I wonder where Angela is. I thought aloud. As I went to check for emails I heard a knock on the door. When I opened the door, I was Alex. “Oh, hey. I didn’t know you were awake yet.” He smiled while I smiled at him back. “Lunch is ready, if your interested. Where having hamburgers!” “Lunch time? Are you sure?” I looked at my clock. I read 1:23 pm. “I think my clock s going to fast.” I said picking it up and examining it more closely. “No, I think you were just tired.” He stood therein the doorway looking at me. I think I heard him laughing. I turned to see him giggling. “What?” I said as I started to laugh. “It’s just…” He looked into my eyes. “You make me laugh.” “Well, I’m glad I amuse you!” I said sarcastically.
I walked down the stars soon followed by Alex. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at me. I felt very uncomfortable. Angela looked at Sarah to see what reaction she had and back at me. Oh, she must be enjoying this! She is evil!
“Those hamburgers smell good.” Alex said trying to ease up the tension. “Good evening Lacey.” My dad said plainly. I nodded. I suddenly felt like I was only three inches tall. I quickly grabbed a plate at sat next to Alex. As soon as I sat down, Sarah got up and left. Ouch. Angela just almost giggled to herself. Man, I just so wanted to throw my drink at her! “Yum! These hamburgers are good!” I smiled at Alex. “Thank you, Lacey.” Sarah said emotionless. Oh, SHE made these? Suddenly, I felt like as though I wasn’t hungry anymore, but I kept eating, just so I wouldn’t start up a fight. “How is your ankle?” My dad asked with a hint of concern. “It’s ok, I guess. Just a little bit sore.” “It'll have to get better because we have a sports test at school next week.” Angela intruded. “Thanks, but I’ll manage.” She really is a princess. She has to be involved in everything!
After lunch I quickly washed up and tried to sneak upstairs without my dad noticing. “Lacey, can I speak to you outside, please?” Well, I guess I couldn’t avoid it forever.
I slowly walked back down the stairs and went outside. I sat on the little love seat. My dad soon followed, but just stood there for a moment, staring at me. He opened his mouth to say something, but closed it. There was another moment of silence until he finally spoke. “Lacey, what is going on? We used to be so lose, but know, I feel like I don’t even know you anymore.” I stood up to face him now. “I told you, it’s Sarah and her million dollar princess. They keep making me feel horrible. They are stealing you away from me.” My dad just stood there with his arms folded. “Why don’t you believe me?” I whined. He just stood there like a statue. “Say something, dad.” “I know Sarah. She wouldn’t do something like this.” I rolled my eyes. “She can be a little over the top, but she is a sweet, lady. And Angela can be a little nosy, but she just cares for you, that’s all.” How blind could you be? I felt like saying. But I kept silent. I soon grew impatient of the silence and turned toward the door. “I have a paper to write at school. I’ll see you later.” I started for the door until he spoke. “Lacey?” He paused. I just stood there, my back turned to him. He stuttered, I didn’t want to wait anymore, so I simply left, without a word.
When I walked up the stairs I bumped into someone, Alex. He looked concerned for me. “Are you okay?” “Fantastic!” I stated lamely. He laughed softly as he tilted his head to the side, causing his black fringe over his eye to sweep down further. I love it when he laughs. “Have you done your paper for school?” “I haven’t even started.” I replied. “Neither have I.” We both laughed. “How about we work on it together? It is due tomorrow.” He asked me shyly. “Love to.” “Cool, I’ll just grab my books and, I’ll meet you outside.” Just before he left, I grabbed him by the arm. He turned to look at me with a blank look. I gave him a hug and said. “Thank you.” He smiled. “What for?” “For being here for me.” “I’ll always, be here, Lacey.”
