"HA I fucking beat you!" the blue haired male cried, throwing his hands up in the air, his right hand clutching the PS2 controller tightly as to not let it fly out of his grasp and hit one of his band mates in the head.
On the other hand, his bright red-haired companion groaned and tossed the green controller carelessly to the side. "That's because you always cheat," he muttered and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Aww, is Daisuke being a poor sport?" the man next to him teased, and he could just feel that goofy grin spread across the bassist's face.
"No, I'm just calling you a cheater, Totchi," he replied smoothly, leaning his back against the bottom of the couch. Both men were seated on the floor, while two of their friends were sprawled out and relaxing on the couch, watching in amusement.
"Why don't you two just have a rematch, Die?" came a mature voice from up on the dark cushioned couch.
"Not until he admits he was cheating!" Die retorted, narrowing his eyes at the man who was in a giggle fit. "And you know you were cheating, Toshiya!"
"How could I? I have no way of rigging it or hacking into the game," Toshiya said, covering his mouth to conceal his laughter, which evidently was not working.
At that moment, just as Die went to go turn off the game consol, the door was flung open, and a slim cream-blonde haired man quickly stepped in and shut the door, closing his umbrella. "Sorry I'm late you guys, and the heavy rain outside wasn't helping," he apologized.
"You're late," Toshiya chimed in along with his wave to the drummer.
He frowned as he set his umbrella down by the door. "That's what I said, Toshimasa. Besides, what's so important that I had to get here as quickly as possible?"
Even though he could not see who gave the next response, the drummer still knew who it was because he was the only figure whose head he could not see, due to his short height. "We wanted to relax and hang out," he mumbled, coaxing bits of laughter from his other band mates aside from the one in front of the door.
"Well, when you put it that way," Die added, snickering. "Don't worry, Shinya. You had nothing planned tonight anyways, right?"
Shinya approached them in the living room, taking a seat next to the petite vocalist on the couch. "Luckily, no."
"Good!" he grinned, "Because we're planning to stay up until midnight so we can wish you a happy birthday then drink and pull an all-nighter!" he announced.
Shinya sighed and rested his forehead in his palm, though he was in fact smiling. It was the 23rd of February, and his birthday was on the 24th, when he would be turning 21. After a while, he felt as if there was a pair of eyes lingering on him. He traced them back to Toshiya, who was in fact staring intently at the drummer's lips.
"Shinya... how come your lips are abnormally huge?" the bassist inquired, obviously amazed.
"What?" their leader said all of a sudden, questioning the authenticity of the subject. "How come you just noticed that now?"
"I saw him smiling and it just popped up into my head!" he stated, then turned his attention back to their youngest member. "But I don't get why your lips are so huge... your parents have normal sized lips." Then a gasp was emitted from his throat. "Did you have a million girlfriends in high school and that's why your lips are big??"
Kaoru scoffed and looked down at him from the couch. "What?" he repeated, just as Die hit him upside the head. "Where the hell are you pulling these ideas out from, your ass?"
"Itai! Why can't I just wonder about things?" Totchi whined, sticking out his bottom lip and looking up at Kaoru with big eyes.
Kyo pulled out a box of cigarettes and a lighter, sticking one of the long white sticks in his mouth as he lit the other end. "Shinya used to play trumpet in middle school and high school before he joined La:Sadie and us."
Die sat cross-legged on the carpet floor and faced the feminine man. "Really? So... were you born with big lips or were they normal until you started to play trumpet?"
Toshiya beamed in triumph that he now had the guitarist on his side in this matter. "If that's the case, then he must have not had any girlfriends because he was either too girly or too wrapped up in the trumpet."
Shinya frowned at them. "Not true! I did have a girlfriend!"
"Good morning class, and welcome to the marching band! Now I would like you all to sit in your sections by type of instrument, please," the band director, Inamura-sensei, told the new class in his booming voice. The students all scattered into their sections, but there was one who was left out.
A petite girl with short raven-black hair stood impatiently in front of the director, and said in a confident voice, "I got put into the group of trumpets, but that's not the instrument I play."
Inamura-sensei looked puzzled down at the young girl. "Was there a mistake? What is your name?" he asked, taking his check sheet and gazing down at it. I clutched my trumpet in my hands, looking down at it and then back up at the girl.
She hesitated for a while, then said, "My name is Koyasu Choizu."
Inamura sensei looked down at the list, then shook his head. "You tried out for trombone, correct? I'm sorry, you were the only trombone who tried out, so we had to switch you to trumpet."
Choizu frowned. "What the heck? I don't own a trumpet! And I don't know how to play it either!" she countered; obviously no happy with the position she was assigned to.
"I will have..." he looked down the list again, "Terachi Shinya help you and give you lessons on trumpet. Also the school will let you borrow one."
My head perked up, and my eyes met with Choizu's. Even from where I was, I could tell she was trying to burn holes through my skull with her eyes, so I quickly waved and looked away.
After school that day, while I was walking home, I heard footsteps from behind me. I turned my head to find that Choizu was following close behind.
"Oh, hello, Choizu," I greeted with a nervous smile.
Choizu frowned. "Are you good at trumpet?" she asked me, ignoring what I had just said.
I shrugged as she caught up to walk beside me. "I think I am a decent trumpet player."
"Are you passionate about it?"
Truthfully, I was losing interest in trumpet and had been playing the drums for a year and a half now, just as a little hobby aside from trumpet. "Well... not really anymore. But that doesn't mean I will teach you poorly or anything."
Choizu nodded, still looking up at me. "I brought the school's trumpet, so I'm going to come over to practice with you today."
I was a little stunned, she had just invited herself over to my house without my consent! But, nevertheless, I didn't argue with her and just replied with, "Fine."
Once at my house, we went up to my room. In the corner was my drum set, which wasn't entirely big, but it suited me fine. It didn't matter about what your set looked it, it matter on how you used it.
Choizu was fascinated with it, and quickly went over to examine it. "You can play these? I want to see!" she said, smiling excitedly. I did as she said and got behind the set, taking a seat on the drum throne and picking up my sticks. I started out with just a fairly easy beat, and then stopped. I decided to play the beat to a song I had written, Marmalade Chainsaw.
It was unknown to me how I could hear her voice through my playing, but I heard them loud and clear in the middle of it all, "So this is your true passion then."
I stopped abruptly and looked up at her smiling face. "What do you mean? It's just a hobby."
She giggled, showing a totally different side to her than I had thought. When she smiled, she looked innocent and honest, and I finally noticed how pretty she actually was. "But that's not what your face actually shows. The whole time you were playing, you were really smiling."
I put a hand up to my lips, to find out that they were indeed curled upwards into a bright smile. I nodded and got out from behind the set, picking up my trumpet from its case by my desk. "Ok, let's just start with the basics now."
--
"I think I really like her, Tooru."
I was walking home from school with my next-door neighbor, Nishimura Tooru. He was two years my senior, but about 6 inches shorter than I was. He had been hanging around my school, waiting for it to end so we could hang out later. He had dropped out after the 9th grade, which was the year I had met him. We went to the same middle school, when I was a 7th grader. Now he was joining bands and going around to perform at clubs as a vocalist for bands. He was more the quiet and mean looking-type, but I had read some of his lyrics before, and behind all of the grotesque and vulgar words, there were some lyrics that made me want to break down into tears.
"Then tell her, before it's too late or something," he advised, taking a drag on his cigarette. He was only 17, but he still smoked anyways, regardless that it was against the law. He however did not drink, because alcohol didn't mix well with his stomach.
"What do you mean?" I asked, waving away the grayish white puffs of smoke that blew my way.
He just shrugged. "I don't know, anything can happen you know."
There was a pause, and within that time, I heard someone from behind us call out in a muffled voice, "MMFGH!"
I turned around and saw Choizu running towards us, her trumpet case in one hand, her book bag in the other, and a bagel shoved in her mouth. When she finally caught up to us, I held her trumpet case for her, and Tooru held her book bag. She took the bagel from her mouth, "Thanks. I can have them back now," she said, slinging the book bag over her should and holding onto the handle of the trumpet case.
"Where did you get the bagel from?" I asked her.
"It was my breakfast," she answered, taking another bite out of it.
Tooru snickered. "So why didn't you eat it at lunch?"
"Because I forgot about it," she retorted, sticking her tongue out at him. This earned a small laugh from me, but then she added, "Also, Shinya-kun, is it ok if we have another trumpet lesson? I'm having problems with this one part..."
Tooru and I exchanged glances, and then he nodded. "It's ok, we can hang out some other time then. I've got band crap to go deal with anyways. Starting to piss me off," he muttered the last part, starting to veer off into a different direction. "You two have fun and use protection, ok?"
"Tooru!!" I cried, my face turning tomato red. There had been times within the past two months I've known Choizu where he would come over and make those jokes about us, but nothing really that sexual sounding.
Once at my house, I went to go get Choizu and I something to drink and eat as a snack. When I walked back up the steps to my room, I saw Choizu sitting on my bed, her head hung down and she didn't even look up at me when I came in. "Is something wrong?" I asked her.
"No, nothing," she replied in a small voice, though I knew better. "Shinya-kun, if you love something a lot, don't ever let it go, ok?"
I raised an eyebrow at her and sat beside her on the bed. "Like what...?"
She paused momentarily, then said, "Like... um, playing the drums. Don't give it up because it's your passion, isn't it?"
I nodded. "How come you're telling me this all of a sudden?"
Suddenly, Choizu grabbed me by the collar and pressed her lips against mine. My eyes grew wide, but I then closed them, pulling her closer. It was my first kiss ever, and I was so happy inside that it was with her.
Unexpectedly, she pulled away, stood up abruptly, and ran out of the room, down the steps, and out the door.
"Choizu!" I cried, rushing after her, but it was too late. She had already gone.
I slunk down with my back against the wall, hugging my knees to my chest and thinking about it, close to tears. "What just happened...?"
"And since then, I never saw her again," Shinya finished, sitting with his knees up against his chest very much like how he did when Choizu ran out of the house. "It was rumored that her family had to move to America because her parents got a new job."
"So..." Toshiya began, "technically, she wasn't your girlfriend?"
"Totchi, shut up!" Die barked, hitting him upside the head again. "That's mean, and completely besides the point!"
Kaoru sighed and leaned over to pat Shinya's head, just as Toshiya had finally recovered from the smack to the head. "So is that why you're never going out with other girls?"
"Mainly, yes..." the drummer admitted, feeling the sorrow coat a thick layer around his heart. He had missed Choizu so much, and it had been nearly 6 years already, and he had heard nothing from or about her since then.
"Hey, let's not make this birthday all-nighter be depressing, alright?" Kaoru spoke up, "Because it's five minutes until midnight, which means we can go ape-shit and get drunk soon, but we need to bring in the cake first, ok?"
Die offered up a wide grin. "Fuck yes! This is the part I've been waiting for!" He ran into the kitchen and came out with a cake with white icing and strawberries and other fruits on it, with unlit candles.
"Hold on, I got it," Kyo said, pulling out his lighter and tossing it to Die. "Don't be stupid with it."
Die and Toshiya both got to lighting the candles, with one minute to spare before midnight. They all chimed in to sing to the young drummer, "Happy birthday to you... happy birthday to you... happy birthday day dear Shinya-kun, happy birthday to you!"
"Hurry up and make a wish!" Toshiya urged, glancing at the clock.
Shinya smiled, and was touched at his band mate's consideration at preparing this for him. He leaned forward, thinking for a moment what his wish would be. Then, when he knew what it would be, he took a deep breath, and blew out all of the candles.
Ding-Dong!
"Right on time," Kyo said, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Shinya, you're the birthday boy, so you get the honors of opening the door."
Confused, he stood up and went to open the door. When he did, he saw a young woman with raven black hair and a shy smile on her face. She seemed so familiar to him. "Um... who are you?" he asked her as he let her into the house out of the rain.
She looked down at her feet, and then rubbed the back of her neck when she gazed up at him. "You're a famous drummer now...I see you didn't let go of what you really love then."
At those words, Shinya gasped and he whispered in a barely audible voice, "No way..." He grabbed her tiny body and pulled her close to him in an embrace. "You're actually wrong, Choizu. I let go of the thing most important to me without realizing it."
She gave him a puzzled look. "What do you mean?" she asked him, with a hint of hope in her voice.
Shinya smiled. "I let you go that day, without telling you that I love you." And with that being said, he leaned down to give her the kiss he had been waiting to give her for so long.
Happy Birthday, Shinya!
