I felt bad about abandoning Melanie like that at the dance, so after I had caught my breath, I called her cell phone. She answered after 2 rings.
''HAYLEY! WHERE THE HELL DID YOU GO?!'' was the first thing that greeted me after she had picked up her cell.
''I'm really sorry, Mel. I didn't feel good, so I walked home,'' I said, feeling guilt wash over me.
''But you're okay right?''
''Yes, I'm fine,''
Liess.
''Okay – Josh, cut it out, you'll talk to her in a second!'' she exclaimed into the phone, as I heard the music in the background, along with Josh's deep voice.
''You're okay now?'' I asked dryly.
''Well, when you left, I panicked, and asked Josh if he'd seen you. Of course he hadn't, so we've been worried and we kinda forgot all about the Bit – I mean, FINE JOSH, BRITTANY!''
I heard some weird noises as Melanie seemed to struggle with the phone.
''Hayley?'' asked Josh's familiar voice, as he finally managed to wrestle the phone away from Melanie. I heard her loud complaints in the background.
I didn't know what to say.
''Hello? Hayley, are you still there? Hello?'' Josh asked, questioningly into the phone.
I could just imagine the way his brows furrowed when he was worried.
''HELLO? Dammit, your connection sucks, Melanie..'' I heard Josh say, as the phone was handed back to Melanie.
''Well, it's not disconnected – LEMME SEE IT! Hello? Hayley?'' she asked, as she regained control of her device.
''Hi.'' I squeaked.
''Why didn't you say anything to him?'' she asked, her voice lowered, and I heard the music fade from the background. She had apparently left the gym.
''I – I don't know,''
More and more lies.
''What is up with you two? You've been acting so weird around him lately!''
''No I haven't,''
''Yes you have.''
''No I haven't.''
''Listen. I'm not gonna argue with you. I'm glad to know that you're home and okay, but I'm gonna go back to the gym, okay? I'll get home around 11 or so, and I'll get online. We can talk then.''
''Fine.''
''Bye, Hay.''
''Bye.''
I hung up the phone and went to shower. Maybe that would help.
