Days had passed since the infamous winking incident, and Eric was glad that the memory had finally begun to make its way toward the back of his mind.
The feelings it resulted in, however, were still ring loud as bells.
They interrupted him while he did his homework, distracted him as he tried to practice, and, worst of all, wouldn't leave him alone as he and Amanda had... "alone time".
It was fifth period right now, and every Thursday, Eric had his favorite class: Independent Study. Normally, IS consisted of 20 students jumbled in a classroom with a very Nazi-esque teacher, all trying to manage an hours sleep. Today's study, though, consisted of the entire soccer team throwing paper balls at each other in the back of the room.
"Hahah! Fuck you, man!" yelled Dennis as he wadded up a piece of paper revenge to huck at Trevor.
"Son of a..." Trevor replied, but trailed off as he pulled Dennis into a friendly, laughter-filled noogie.
Typical teenage, testosterone-fueled male behavior.
Eric was sitting at his normal spot, sandwiched in between Conner and Amanda. He watched the playful scene enfold in front of him with his normal half-smile.
Yet again, his mind was not in room 19 with Mr. Cover. His mind was following Jesse Murdoch around the halls, trying to finally corner him and get some answers about that stupid little wink.
Did it even mean anything at all? Eric often thought to himself. Sometimes he wondered if it had even happened. Maybe his mind had fabricated the gesture.
But why?
He was so caught up in thought of Jesse, he though that the image of a boy in tight pants and an Atreyu shirt was all in his imagination.
But then Jaryd soon followed and sank into the seat beside his imaginary Jesse, and started having a conversation.
Cautiously, Eric lifted his eyes to look at that sat across that sat directly opposite the center aisle from him. He nearly let out gasp when he saw how intensely his gaze was met.
There was something about Jesse's eyes; Eric had never noticed how very blue they were (after all, who could see through all the make-up?). But even more. There was an... innocence about them. Like they displayed every emotion he felt.
Eric had to look away quickly. Jesse followed.
"Jess?" Jaryd called, waving his hand in front of his friend's dazed face.
Jesse sat up straight in his chair. "Hmm? What's that?"
Jaryd opened his mouth to continue, but stopped as piece of paper flung from the other side of the room, directly onto Jesse's face.
"Ah! WhattheHell?" he shrieked in his high-pitched and often girly tone of voice.
Laughter erupted from the opposite side of the room. A very specific section of the room.
He glared towards the jocks.
"Come on, sweetie, what's the matter?" yelled Mitch. "Did your boyfriend freeze you out last night?"
Everyone around Eric squealed with laughter, even the girls. He was shocked at how cruel they were being. What had Jesse ever done to them?
"Aw, Princess, don't pout." Trevor yelled. "Why don't you give me a nice big kiss?"
With that, Jesse was done. Tears in his eyes, he got up from his desk and stormed out the room. But of course, the boys had to have one final comment.
It was Conner, Eric's best friend in the world, who called. "Just tell me one thing: Who's the man of the relationship?"
Jaryd sent the sent daggers with his eyes to the entire section as he ran after Jesse, but for some reason, Eric couldnt help but notice how his eyes flickered especially to him.
"Wait!" the teacher snapped out of his daze. "Get back here, you two!"
"Probably off to the Janitor's closet." Muttered Deb, Mitch's girlfriend, under her breath.
Now it was Eric who was mad. He rose from his seat, grabbed and hall pass and murmered "I'm going to the bathroom" just loud enough for the teacher and his friend to hear.
It's off to find Jesse.
Is it to late to make amends?
