Keeping Your Sanity is a Bonus...Keeping Your Life is Crucial [Part 8]

Here's part 8. Do you know I think I have more of the sequal done than I do for this? Then again, I started with the sequal, so that makes sense I guess. This layout was made by Balmy January Layouts.

When she awoke, she heard the steady "beep! beep! beep!" of her heart on the machine that was monitoring her heartbeat, and it took her a few minutes to realize that she was in the hospital wing of the mansion. Why she was there was beyond her.

Looking around, she spotted Alex in a chair beside her bed, fast asleep. She noted that he was a lot less annoying when he was asleep, and she smiled at his sleeping form. "Just like Damien", she thought with a smile on her face.

Wait, where was Damien? She looked around the room, not finding him. He would've been the first person waiting for her to wake up, not Alex. Why was Alex in here anyway? She wasn't on good terms with him yet. Damn it! Where was Damien?

She stuck her hand out, shaking Alex awake. He groggily opened his eyes, looking like he wanted desperatly to fall back asleep until he noticed who had woken him up.

"Rose, you're awake!"

She stared at him blankly for a minute.

"Why was I asleep?"

He looked at her for a moment, until he realized that she really didn't know why she was in the hospital.

"Rose, your body went into shock. You fainted at the funeral."

Funeral? Who had a funeral? She didn't remember any funeral.

"Who had a funeral? And where's Damien? He should be here now."

Alex couldn't believe it. She didn't remember that Damien was dead. He tried to be as gentle as he could about it, because he didn't want to lie to her.

"You don't remember?"

She was beginning to get annoyed, something that happened frequently to her.

"Remember what?"

He let out a long sigh before standing up and pressing a button on the wall.

"Yes?" A woman's voice squawked on the other end.

"I need you to send in Dr. Whalberg. Rosalie Stanton has just woken up, and there's a slight problem."

The woman's voice perked up slightly, the first interesting thing that had happened all day. "I'll get him right away sir."

Five minutes later, Dr. James Whalberg bustled into the room. He was an old, balding man with a warm smile, and could make anyone comfortable, no matter what the situation.

"Ah Miss Stanton, you're awake! Lovely, absolutely lovely."

He turned to Alex, "You said there was a problem?"

Alex nodded, like he was confirming someone's death.

"Yes sir. She doesn't remember what happened to make her body go into shock and lock itself away. She's asking for Damien."

The doctor instantly looked somber.

"I was afraid of that. This isn't the first time something like this has happened to her. The last time was when her mother locked herself away. I hear she's out and about now."

Rosalie's expression soured at the thought of her mother.

"What are we going to do?"

The doctor sighed, rubbing his forehead. "The only thing we can do; tell her the truth."

They turned to Rosalie, and Dr. Whalberg decided he should be the one to break the news. He'd done it once before, so he knew what kind of ground he was treading on.

"Rosalie, dear girl, your brother is dead," he started gently.

The words didn't register in her brain.

"He died during an attack last week by the vampires. You were there, right beside him when it happened I'm told, which must've been traumatizing to begin with. You had such an attachment to him, which made it worse by default. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to care deeply about your family, I'm just stating a fact. You loved your brother, and were hurt deeply when he was killed. At the funeral, your body simply shut down from the internal hurt you felt."

No, he was lying. Damien wasn't dead. They were lying!

"You think it's funny to play a cruel joke on someone who's just woken up in a hospital? My brother is not dead! You're lying!"

Dr. Whalberg was expecting her reaction.

"No Rosalie, I'm not. Your brother, Damien Nathaniel Stanton, is no longer with us. They lowered his body into the ground Three days ago. You've been out cold for three days."

She scruntinized the doctor's expression, moving to Alex, and back again. There was no hint of a lie, only sincere regret for what happened.

She broke down, and Alex moved to comfort her.

"Ssh Rose, it'll be alright. You'll move past it, you're a strong girl. It'll be alright."

He continued to whisper words of comfort in her ear, and the doctor signed her release form before leaving the room.

Rosalie eventually composed herself and looked at Alex.

"Why are you comforting me anyway? I'm mean to you."

He laughed, and she didn't see what was funny about what she had said.

"Only because I kissed you when you didn't want it. Besides, I'm your boyfriend. It's in the job description."

She shook her head, "If I were you, I wouldn't want to be my boyfriend."

He smiled gently at her, "Luckily for you, you're not me, and I do like you. So you're stuck at the moment unless you find someone else who likes you."

Holding her eyes, he leaned forward, gripping her face gently and kissing her lightly. She didn't push him away this time. This time she embraced it, deeping the kiss somewhat before breaking away for air. She smiled at him, and he returned it.

Leaning forward, she rested her head on his chest, content for the time being. Maybe some good had come from this afterall.

She looked up towards the sky outside the window, fresh tears pricking her eyes.

"Take care of him for me." she prayed silently. A rainbow shot across the sky, and she knew that God would keep his word.

Poor Rosalie. She's strong though, and will move past it.
