Chapter 28
“Bonsai!!!” Frank yelled as he jumped into the lake in his boxers.
“Stop splashing!” Alexis whined.
“Well then, get your scrawny ass down here!” Frank laughed.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” Alexis took her time.
“That’s what she said!” Anne began laughing uncontrollably followed by the others.
“Hey Alexis, nice bra.” Kati walked over to her.
“Thanks I got it at- AHHHHH!” Alexis screamed as Kati pushed her into the water.
“Well, I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my bra covered in murky lake water.” Kelsey stripped all the way down.
“Oh Jesus.” Tricia rolled her eyes.
It was so dark it barely mattered whether you kept your clothes on or not. Besides, from the looks of things, Schuler doubted this group was very modest. Schuyler looked up at the moon, it was full and bright white. The moon had always been comforting to her, a sign of protection and purity. She was still perched on a high rock when she noticed everyone was in the water except her.
“You okay?” Jesse yelled up to her, judging by the bruises on his arms, it was clear everyone had ganged up on him and threw him in.
“Yeah, I’m okay. I’ll be down in a sec.” Schuyler slowly began stripping off her clothes. She was down to her bra and underwear when she realized Jesse had climbed up the ledge with her. She turned to face him sitting Indian style with her arms folded across her chest.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” he sat across from her and lightly laid his hand on her cheek and stroked it with his thumb.
“Yes, I don’t know I feel weird, distracted. I can’t stop staring at the moon, it feels… ominous somehow.” Schuyler threw his hands down in frustration.
“Perhaps it’s some kind of warning? Whether it’s good or bag though I couldn’t tell you.” Jesse pulled Schuyler into his lap. She rested her head on his chest and he buried her hair.
“I suppose only time will tell.” She sighed, lifting her face to his. Their lips met in a sweet and smooth kiss.
“I love you for eternity.” He looked her deeply in the eyes.
“You know I love you too, forever and for always.” She smiled.
“HEY BOOBS, GET DOWN HERE!” Gerard interrupted their moment. Schuyler laughed as she moved to the edge of the rock and removed her last article of clothing.
She felt exposed, but not in a bad way. Standing on the shore sky clad was freeing in a way. She dove into the water in a fluid motion, hardly making a splash.
Jesse shuffled in.
“Where’d she go?” Kati asked.
“Don’t worry, with those things, she’s gotta float- AHHH!” Gerard stopped short as he disappeared under the water.
Schuyler resurfaced laughing and gasping for air.
“Nice.” Anne slapped Schuyler high five.
“Hey! No one messes with my big brother!” Mikey playfully lunged for Schuyler, but Frank intercepted him mid-air and dunked him. Everyone began laughing and splashing and dunking each other.
Schuyler stealthily swam almost under the water, so only her eyes shone in the moonlight. She moved so smoothly she left no ripple, no sign she’d moved in the water. Quietly she crept up behind Jesse and wrapped her arms around his waist, she raised her head to whisper in his ear. “Shall we slip away?” She kissed his neck.
“Follow me.” He held her hand and pulled her further out into the water. They quietly slipped away and Jesse led Schuyler to a cove. They turned to face each other, only being able to see brief outlines of each other’s faces, and that was only due to their advanced eyesight. Jesse brushed Schuyler's hair behind her ear and moved his mouth to hers. His slow and cautious kiss quickened by her urgent one. She immediately tangled her fingers in his dark hair and pressed her body to his. He responded by further quickening the pace, his hands frantically clutching her body, he sensed her urgency in her embrace and couldn’t place why. He pulled back and she just as quickly advanced forward. He pulled back once again, this time taking her face in his hands and wiping the hair from her face.
“Whoa, whoa, relax Querida. What’s wrong? Why such urgency?” he looked deep into her eyes which were beginning to well up with tears. “Shh.” He soothed, pulling her to him and rocking her back and forth. “What’s wrong?” he smoothed her hair.
“I don’t know, something’s wrong, I can feel it, but I don’t know what.” She cried exasperated.
“Is it too loud again? Are you picking up too many thoughts?” Jesse guessed.
“No, something bad is going to happen, I can see it. I keep catching glimpses behind my eye, fire, a girl with dark hair, and a scream for help. It’s so dark, I can’t see where she is, I can’t help her, but she’s there!” Schuyler broke down in sobs.
“Are they memories?” Jesse asked, not fully understanding.
“No! I’m telling you this is going to happen tonight.”
“So you’re saying you’re having visions?” Jesse asked cautiously.
“I think so.” Schuyler answered.
“Well that’s new.”
“Story of my life.”
“Well, what do you want to do?” Jesse asked.
“I want to help her!’ Schuyler exclaimed.
“Okay, well let’s get going them.” Jesse and Schuyler swam quickly to shore and hastily began dressing.
“What’s going on?” Kati asked worriedly.
“Uhm… we gotta go… Schuyler doesn’t… feel… well…” Jesse fumbles for an excuse under the pressure. He was losing his skills becoming so familiar with these humans.
“Are you sure? Do you need help?” Anne asked.
“The truth is guys, I have a strong feeling something bad is going to happen to a girl tonight and I have to find her and help her.” Schuyler explained. Jesse just looked at her. “What?! We’ll be able to fix thing quicker with all the extra hands.” She explained.
“Alright, let’s go.” Kelsey exclaimed and everyone hurriedly got dressed, and jumped into the cars they came in.
“…So. Exactly how do you know it’s a girl that needs to be helped?” Kati asked.
“I’ve been having… visions. I guess you could call them.” Schuyler paused as Jesse shot her a warning glance. “in my dreams.” She smoothly finished.
“Okay cool.” Tricia and Kati said in unison.
“You mean you guys aren’t creped out?” Bob asked.
“No, not really, I get really strong feelings about people I meet.” Kati explained.
“I have a really open mind, and I pick up on people’s emotions really easily.” Tricia added.
“So I basically believe that to a certain degree everyone has… talents.’ She finished.
“You guys are freakin’ awesome!” Mikey kissed Kati on the cheek.
“So where are we headed?” Bob asked.
Schuyler stared blankly out the window. “There's a long curving road, though not many cars are on it, and there’s a bridge.” Her voice shook as her eyes closed, her mind succumbing to the vision. Suddenly Schuyler could see everything.
The scene unfolded in front of her, the full moon, a girl with dark hair walking down a street, a man hassling her, Schuyler glanced to her right to a street sign, and then she was back in the car. She gasped.
“What?! What is it?! Are you okay?! Jesse frantically asked; taking in the wide-eyed shock on Schuyler’s face.
“We need to get to Maddison and Second NOW!” Schuyler demanded as Bob accelerated. “We don't have much time!” Schuyler exclaimed, taking in the position of the moon, they had about twenty minutes.
“I’ll call the others.” Tricia whipped out a slim pink cell phone and began dialing. She told the others what was going on. “They’re behind us.” She informed Schuyler.
They reached the corner and saw no one was on the bridge yet, so they parked in the woods, figuring if anyone saw them they potentially risked changing future events. Everyone else waited in the car as Schuyler crouched in the bushes (which was NOT without objection from Jesse.)
Suddenly Schuyler saw a girl in black jeans, black sneakers, and a black Clandestine hoodie. She had shoulder length wavy hair, which fell over on shoulder, her head was down, but Schuyler could tell she had pale skin, almost as pale as her own. The girl was halfway across the bridge when a shiny SUV pulled beside her, and two men, about twenty-three years old, stepped out. Schuyler could hear the conversation from her hiding spot.
“Hey gorgeous, where you headed?” the Blonde asked
The girl kept her head down and slightly quickened her pace. The men kept up easily.
“My friend asked you a question.” The taller darker one asked.
Schuyler quickly scanned the girls thoughts, her name was Meg, and for some reason she wasn’t scared. Just then Megs head snapped up and her eyes locked on Schuyler’s. Schuyler gasped. “She’s one of us.” She stood up and noiselessly ran over to Meg. “Megan! There you are! Sorry I’m late! The others are waiting just at the end of the bridge.” Schuyler said ignoring the guys. “Oh… these friends of yours?” she mocked wondered, as Jesse pulled the cars to the end of the bridge.
“No, they just needed directions, I think we’re done here. Bye Boys.” Meg smirked.
The blonde one grabbed Megs arm, the brunette boy suddenly behind Schuyler, both of them blatantly not seeing the two waiting cars at the end of the bridge. “Oh come one, we just want to have some fun.” The boy smiled cruelly.
*Just play along, and follow my lead.* Schuyler instructed Meg.
*Okay*
“Oh, well if it’s fun you want…” Schuyler and Meg turned to face the guy guarding each of them. “Then I guess we could play along.” Schuyler ran her hand down the guy’s chest, and Meg put her arms around the other’s neck. *On the count of three.* Schuyler thought as she smiled coyly, her hand slowly moving downward.
*One* the guys smiled.
*Two*
*Three* Schuyler grabbed, twisted, and pulled as Meg swiftly brought her knee up into blondies groin. Both men fell to the ground in agony as the girls ran towards the car. “Bitch!” the blonde shrieked.
They stopped running about a half a mile away from the car. “Listen, there are… others with us.” Schuyler began. “The boys are like us, the girls are human, and they don’t know anything. They’re our friends, so please don’t tell them.” Schuyler explained.
“Are you like hunting them?” Meg asked in disgust.
“No! No! They’re just friends, well they’re dating the guys.” She admitted sheepishly.
“Oh! Okay. Thanks for the help back there. I don’t know if I would have been able to handle them without giving myself away!” Me explained.
“No problem.” Schuyler offered.
“Why were crouching in the woods?” Meg asked.
“I had a feeling something bad was going to happen.” Schuyler stated, it was clear from her tone that she wasn’t going to further explain.
Just then the girls heard the roar of an engine, and the unmistakable squeal of tires. They looked up and saw the two boys flying towards them.
*Stupid asses* Schuyler thought to herself. They still had a ways to go, so she wasn’t concerned just yet. Then she looked over to Meg and saw her eyes, which were how orange and red.
“What the fu-.” Schuyler stopped mid-sentence when she heard a loud banc, she quickly shifted her focus to the car, which was now skidding and squealing in circles. The front of the car was engulfed in flames. The guys jumped out of their car and ran the other way. “Did you do that?” Schuyler turned to Meg, who was pale beyond belief, her eyes glazed and unfocused.
“I’m so… sorry.” She whispered as she fell to the ground.
“Is she dead?” Tess asked.
“No she’d just unconscious.” Frank explained as he picked her up and sat in the car with Meg cradled in his lap.
