I awoke the next morning with a sort of dread.
I would meet Sadie and Kyrian and we would walk side-by-side on the darkest day of school. My mom drove me and I was silent. I walked up to Sadie and Kyrian at the front of the school. I hugged both of them.
"Ready?" Sadie asked. I took a deep breath and nodded.
Already the atmosphere was horrible. We walked in and there were students everywhere, crying and hugging eachother. There were even kids who didn’t know eachother who were hugging.
There were dark purple and black drapes all over the gym. It didn’t look like a gym anymore though. There were candles lit on the stage. There were maybe nine or ten of them. The lights were very dimmed and there was a man playing a sad song on the piano.
Sadie, Kyrian and I found our seats in the second row from the front.
The gym began to grow packed. I looked around and found Sara, sitting in the front row on the opposite side of us, crying into her hands. I saw Beth and Anna, locking arms, walking down the row to sit with Sara. The door opened and someone with crutches came in. I did a double take a realized it was Mr.Kesik.
He made his way to the row in front of ours.
"Hey guys." He said to us.
"What happened to your leg?" Sadie asked. Mr.Kesik glanced at me.
"I didn’t really talk to anyone yesterday." I said to him.
Sadie looked confused. I opened my mouth to explain but the microphone screamed. No one winced or flinched.
"Attention staff and students." He announced over the mircrophone. He didn’t have to wait, we were all silent. "We have up here, ten candles. They each represent someone we lost in the shooting yesterday. Father John Ashton will bless it and blow out the candle."
He picked up the first candle. The father drew an invisible cross on it with his hand and blew it out.
"Laila Johnson." The principal said.
I was shocked. Sadie looked shocked too.
Again, the priest drew a cross over the candle and blew it out.
"Jamie Hanson."
I looked at Kyrian, whose expression didn’t change.
The father repeated the steps again.
"Samantha-Anne Fetter."
I glanced at Sara, who sobbed a bit.
"Seth barenski."
"Josh Lenue."
"Robbie Galambus."
"Celeste Harren."
"Mr.Rounding."
I knew a couple of the people who had been killed. I knew Seth for sure, Sadie’s ex-boyfriend. I looked at her and her eyes were teary.
"One candle for Kailiegh Manner, who passed away earlier this year and one for Sasha Dungious."
There was a cry of outrage from the back. A murmur waved through the rows of people.
"Yes. Sasha Dungious was the criminal in all this." The principal said, "But as the bible says…"
I started to zone out.
They were blessing the person who caused this whole tragedy. They were blessing the person who took away the lives of eight people. Did he deserve it?
A couple hours later the service was done and everyone slowly made their way out of the gym.
Kyrian, Sadie and I walked outside. I breathed in deep.
"Wanna come over?" I asked them.
They looked at eachother uncertainly.
"Look." I said, "We can wallow around and be depressed forever or we can just take life how we’re given it and live it."
They smiled in surprise.
"Talk about a complete one-eighty." Kyrian smirked.
I smiled, "Sometimes change it good."
