I showered and did my hair quickly. Walking downstairs I passed my mom and said, “I’m going out.”
“Hold on.” She said, “Where are you going?”
I paused. She never used to question my whereabouts.
“I’m going to visit my teacher in the hospital.” I said.
“Well let me give you a ride.” She smiled, “Let’s go for a ride Brea.”
“We got into the car and we were on our way.
“Thanks for driving me.” I said after a few minutes.
“No problem.” She smiled, “But you’ll have to take the bus home, I’m going to be trimming Brea’s hair.”
“Okay.” I smiled.
She dropped me off and waved.
I waved back and made my way to the front entrance. I walked up to the front desk.
“Can I help you?” The secretary asked.
“Yes. I’m here to see Mr.-“
I stopped in mid-sentence and my face turned red. I didn’t know Mr.Kesik’s name.
“Are you okay?” She asked me.
“Y-yeah.” I stammered, “Well I came to see my teacher, but I don’t know his first name. Can you still help me out?”
“Do you know his last name?” She asked.
“Kesik” I replied. She began typing on her computer.
“Lucky for you there’s only one Kesik in the hospital tonight.” She smiled. “First floor, room 177.”
“Thanks.” I smiled. She smiled back.
162,164,169,172,174,177.
I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. I cracked it open.
“Come in.” I heard him say.
“Hi, sir.” I smiled shyly.
“Calie.” He said in surprise. “Hi.”
I waved and smiled.
“I wasn’t expecting any company.” He said, trying to sit up without hurting his leg.
“Is it okay that I’m here?” I asked.
“Sure.” He said optimistically, “What I meant was none of my family was going to come see me.”
“That’s too bad.” I said, pulling up a chair beside his bed. “Why wont they come see you?”
“Well, the only family I have now lives far away.” He said, “I wouldn’t expect them to come all the way down here for me.”
I sighed, “How are you feeling?”
“Well, they put me in surgery right away to remove the bullet.” He explained, “Then they stitched it up.”
I nodded.
“Up until today, I never knew the magic of pain killers.” He smirked. I giggled.
“I was never so scared in my life when I found you.” I said, “I was really scared you were going to die of blood loss or something.”
“You were so brave.” He said. “You acted so- he snapped his fingers three times- wrap the leg, take the pulse, check for fever, communicate. You were amazing today.”
“Thanks.” I said, blushing, “I thought I would have froze, but I didn’t.”
“Are you going to the memorial tomorrow?” Mr.Kesik asked.
“Yeah.” I said, “But I’m a little nervous though. I don’t know everyone who’s been killed yet.”
“I guess that makes three funerals for you in one semester.” Mr.Kesik said.
“Two.” I corrected him, “Tomorrow’s memorial and kailiegh’s.”
“Your father?” He reminded me.
“Oh yeah.” I said, shocked I forgot, “I almost didn’t remember.”
“I don’t think you want to remember.” He said, “I think you wish everything could just stay as it was.”
“You sound like a therapist.” I smirked. He gave a tiny smile.
“What?” I asked.
“I really shouldn’t tell you now.” He said, “But I am a therapist.”
I raised my eyebrows.
“So all that time at school you were an undercover therapist?”
He laughed. “I’m a part-time fitness teacher. I’m a therapist for a living.”
“Huh.” I said awkwardly.
“You’re set for therapy in a month, aren’t you?” He asked.
“How’d you know?” I asked in shock.
“I’m your therapist.” He said bluntly.
“Seriously?” I asked loudly.
“Yes. I’ve known since March.”
“Wow.” I said in shock, “That’s coincidental.”
He nodded in agreement.
We kind of stared each other for a minute.
“I should probably go.” I said, standing up. “It’s getting late.”
“Calie?” Mr.Kesik said.
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for visiting me.” He said. Then he opened his arms.
I blushed a bit and hesitantly gave him a one-armed hug.
“You’re welcome.” I said, a bit breathless.
“Bye, Calie.”
“Bye.”
