"What, are you scared?" The taunting words met my ears and I turned around to face the steady stare of my boyfriend's friend. Deron hit him across the chest making him stumble back a step while shooting him his infamous killer death glare.
"I'm not scared of anything." I defended myself turning back to look at the old, eerie building. We were at Byberry Mental Hospital in Philadelphia. Somehow I got dragged into this along with my boyfriend and two of his friends. So naturally two of my friends refused to let me go at this alone with three idiots, and they should be here any moment.
"I won't let anything bad happen to you." Deron whispered into my ear wrapping his arms around me securely. I honestly don't think any living being could stop a force that wasn't. But did I open my mouth to point this out? Nope, because I like to think he can protect me from anything and everything he wanted.
"Katelyn if you don't stop being paranoid I swear to everything holy I will hand you off to someone else." I turned my head and laughed as I saw Kylie and Katelyn, my two best friends, walk up to stand with Deron, Chad, Jess, and I. Kylie was holding some papers and was carrying a backpack. I noted her camera being held by Katelyn.
"Anjilika. Kylie's being mean to me." Katelyn whined as Kylie scoffed, grabbed her camera then shoved her into Chad.
"Kylie be nice." I said in a fake scolding tone. She stuck her tongue out at me. The sun was just now beginning to set, the air becoming colder and the skies changing from a warm overcast color to those of darker and cool.
"What's in the bag?" Chad asked kicking at it, Kylie in turn whipped around catching his ankle that had not reached the ground and flipped him on his back. The rest of us busted into a fit of laughter at Chad's astonished face and Kylie's smug grin.
"Stuff that no one thought to bring, I'm sure." She answered.
"Hey! We have flashlights." I said waving my own around in her direction.
"Yeah, that's great and everything but we're supposed to be here all night." Deron patted his pocket where he held extra batteries.
"Dude its Kylie." Katelyn said looking down at her Converse with a laugh.
"Right." I agreed.
"I'm guessing I'm the only one who did research on this place?" All five of us nodded as she groaned and rolled her eyes at our lack of intelligence for when it came to haunted places.
"You're the only one who really gives a fuck." Deron said laughing.
"Right, right. Well anyways I have doctor's masks,"
"What in the hell for?" Jess asked looking at her like she was nuts. I kicked his shin.
"Let her finish."
"Because this place has asbestos. I talked to security and they're letting us in here. But told me just to avoid the cops if they decide to do a drive by. I brought two hoodies cause I figured two of you idiots would forget how it gets cold when the sun is no longer shining." She said looking over at Deron and Jess suggestively. I elbowed Deron lightly in his stomach with a smile. Jess took the six-year-old route and stuck his tongue out at her.
"Nice Jess. Real mature." Katelyn said rolling her eyes.
"We ready to go in?" Chad asked looking kind of anxious now, hopping from one foot to the other.
"Just give me a second." Kylie said kneeling down beside her bag to fiddle with something.
"You scared Katelyn?" I asked looking over at her, she adjusted her glasses on her face and shrugged her shoulders.
"Kind of." She answered looking from the graffiti infested walls of the building back to me.
"Don't worry Stiller I'll protect you." Chad said wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
"Hey! Hands off the best friend Ginsburg!" I barked at him. Katelyn laughed as Chad slid away from her and towards Jess who was bothering Kylie with stupid questions about the stuff in her bag.
"Babe, are you seriously not scared?" Deron asked swinging me around to face the building, resting his hands in my hoodie pockets and his head on my right shoulder.
"No way." I answered; keeping my voice steady as a sudden chill made it's way through my body as my eyes glanced over a shattered window.
"Whatever you say." He kissed me on the cheek and let his arms wrap around me once again.
"Who you gonna call, Ghostbusters." I looked over my left shoulder at Kylie who was standing up from the ground, camera in hand.
"What?" She asked looking at me with a goofy grin.
"You're truly one of a kind Ky."
"I'm going to dismiss that intended insult." I shook my head with a smile.
"Now can we go in?" Chad asked impatiently. Kylie waved us all forward, her bringing up the rear.
One, two, three, and down you go.
"Welcome to Byberry." I heard her say with a quiet laugh followed by the beeping of the camera being turned on.
Yes, no?
