Chapter Eighteen: Jacque Merovingian

“Why should we trust you?” Dad growled, pointing his gun at Jacque. “Because only I and my father know where the prisoners are.” He said with a smirk. “And why are you helping us?” I demanded. His smile faded a little. “Let’s just say that I don’t approve of my father’s illegal ventures.” Trinity frowned. “Should we trust him?” she whispered. Morpheus shrugged. “It’s the only option. We don’t know where they are, and he can lead us to them.” Dad frowned. “But what if it’s a trap?” he hissed. “It’s the only option.” Morpheus repeated. Dad still didn’t look convinced, and I wasn’t either, but Jacque coughed into his hand and spoke. “We should get going. They’re scheduled to be transported in an hour.” Dad nodded at me. I trained my gun on Jacque. “You will lead us to this place. If you set one toenail out of line, you are dead meat, got it?” He smiled pleasantly. “Of course. This way.” He lead us through a complicated series of passageways that would have been difficult to navigate without a guide. “So.” He said to me as he walked along. Morpheus, Dad, and Trinity were a little ways behind, quietly talking. “What’s your name?” I frowned. “If you’re trying to distract me with conversation, it won’t work.” I snapped. Dad had taught me well about negotiation skills. “I just want to know.” He said, melting my insides with a look from his dark, dark eyes. They were so dark blue as to nearly be black, and completely gorgeous. “I’m Skye.” I said after a brief pause. “Skye Smith.” He nodded and took a right turn. “Your parents are Agent Smith and Joanna Robinson?” he asked. “Yeah, how did you know?” He didn’t meet my eyes for a second. “My father talks about your mother a lot. Seems she was his wife in a previous life, then came back and married Agent Smith.” I nodded. “That’s right. Who’s your mother?” He smiled ruefully. “That’s a story I’m not ready to tell yet.” I shrugged. “Fair enough. Is this the place?” He had come to a halt just outside a large stone archway. “Yes. Only my father and I know the way here. It’s a very high-security prison. Dad’s not here right now, you’ll be able to release your friends and get out of here.” I met his eyes. “Why are you really doing this?” I asked him. He smiled wistfully. “Because I can, Cousin.” Then he was gone.
Dad, Trinity and Morpheus caught up with me, where I still stood, shell-shocked. “They’re around here?” Morpheus asked. I nodded. “Good. Trinity will help you get them out, and we’re going to go get the others. Meet us back at your home, okay?” I nodded again. I was still a bit tongue-tied. Morpheus and Dad took off, and I cautiously followed Trinity through the archway into a circular white room. All around were cells with stone floors, mattresses on the ground, and various levels of mold and moss. “Trina!” Trinity yelled. She raced towards a cell that held Katrina Anderson. She wasn’t in a good state. Her wings were ripped and torn, dreadfully thin, weak, and dirty. Trinity was holding her hand through the bars. “Aunt Trina.” I said with a smile. “Skye! It’s… great to see… you. How’s… your mom… and brother?” she asked weakly, her voice little more than a whisper. “They’re fine. But right now, we have to free you, the Twins, and Thomas and Juliana.” Her face fell. “Thomas… Juliana… They’ve already been shipped. We have… have to… rescue…” She murmured. Her eyelids flickered. “I’m going to get the Twins. You carry Trina.” I said to Trinity. She nodded, and set to work on the lock. I hurried to the next cell over. The Twins were lying there, their clothes ripped and torn. Two raised his head feebly and smiled at me. “Skye… Expect you’re just another hallucination… Take me home, please. Help One… He’s not… Not well.” I set to work on the lock, getting it undone in a couple seconds. Thank God the Merovingian thought that no one else could get here, otherwise there would have been much worse locks. I hauled open the door and pulled Two to his feet. “Can you walk?” I asked him. “Because I need to carry One.” He nodded, and clutched at the wall for support. “Trina…” he muttered. “Trinity’s got her. We have to get you out of here.” I replied. “This is real, isn’t it?” I nodded, Heaving One up in a fireman’s carry after checking his pulse. It was slow, but normal, thank God. Two smiled. “Rescued… I… I think I can walk.” I shifted One on my shoulders and slowly walked out of the cell. “Trina all right?” I asked Trinity. She nodded, holding Trina as if she was feather light. “Yeah, let’s go.” She responded. I started towards the archway, then stopped. “I don’t know how to get out!” I said angrily. “I couldn’t possibly remember all those turns!” Trinity frowned at me. “Jacque gave us maps. Here.” She handed one to me. I followed it out, keeping my pace slow for Two, who could only barely walk. As I rounded the last turn, Trinity’s cell phone buzzed. “Yeah?” she said into it. “The Merovingian expected us to go to the other cells! There’s a huge battle! Don’t come, take the Twins and Trina to Smith’s house, we’ll meet you there. I repeat, do not come!” Neo’s voice was taut with stress and there were gunshots in the background. The line cut, and Trinity slowly closed her phone, looking mutinous. I read her thoughts. “Trinity, we have to keep the Twins and Trina safe!” I said. She sighed and shook her head. “I know… Come on, let’s go. There’s an emergency exit over here.” She lead me to it, with One stumbling behind. We made our way home, to lay the Twins and Trina in the med room, and worry about the others with every passing moment.
