A Uchiha Sasuke One-Shot

"Lets fly to the most beautiful sky...
...and try to find the real future, Manami..."

"Stop being so timid," an author said harshly as he read Sasuke's latest piece.
"I'm not," Sasuke objected indifferent.
"Whenever you come close to any emotion you shy away."
"I won't write tragedies."
"Just in case they come to life?!?" The author questioned sarcastically, tossing the pages down with disgust. "You have no reason to be a coward. These never would. Wittenbaum "
"...was twisted." Sasuke finished for him, picking up his pieces. "Stories shouldn't tear you apart!"
"Yes, they should!!!!" The author shouted raising his voice over Sasuke's. "You have to let your writing be something other than saccharine little packets. Until you do that, you'll never write anything great, or real for the matter."
As Sasuke gathered his work, he looked at one of the pages, "real?" He spat.
"What does the moron know about reality!"
Sasuke didn't care much about his work being criticized. His work was realistic, that's all he cared about.
He hopelessly scoured every bit of prose he had ever written about her and somehow couldn't find any reason for this...

He watched her everyday, and every time he learned more and more about her.
He had to help her and he couldn't fail. Not this time.
Some days it would be too much, so he would hold her and silently whisper, "I don't want to loose you anymore than I already have."
She would smile serenely at him and it seemed like she was answering him with, "you haven't lost me at all."
He wished her to have said that, but she could've easily meant, "I feel like I'm losing you too, or I forgive you for not being able to save me."
Or most horribly, "I don't understand you anymore, Sasuke."
But, of course, to speak the gift of speech was needed. And she was mute.
Manami wished to tell Sasuke a thousand things, but she had given up that power, and couldn't even say the ones she wanted the most.
"Believe in yourself, Sasuke, you are already a greater writer than most men will ever be."
"I wanted to dance with you forever."
"I don't have any regrets, my love, thank you for being there for me."

But mostly she wanted to tell him something straight from the heart. "I love you, and I'll never leave your side, just believe."
The words they'd never said hung between them, untouched.
Sasuke wanted to promise Manami he would keep her save, but he kept silent, because he knew she couldn't say it back.
He loved her, but he could never save her. This time, he couldn't even give her the strength to save herself.
She was dieing.
"I don't mind. Sasuke," she wrote down, "I'll be always in your heart."
"You don't mind..." Sasuke repeated, but he could see the resignation in her eyes every night as another day past, and her last day neared.
She had always fought so hard for other's happiness. He couldn't betray her by not doing the same for her and that is exactly as much as he told her. He would risk himself in a second, but not her. He couldn't help but worry that this was where his weakness laid.
His weakness laid within her.
He tried not to let this rule him, but there was so much on the line and too much to lose. He had always believed in her strength, but not his own.
Unexpectedly she hugged him, mouthing into the cotton of his shirt, "Thank you."
"I will keep you save.
Save, always and forever, in an endless embrace.
In my arms to protect you, and close to my heart to love you.
Only You.
I am determined, Manami. I will cure your heart."

"No, 'Nami-chan, you can't leave. It isn't time yet, please, I can't let you go..."
Gasping in pain, she clutched to Sasuke's shirt.
Her eyelids felt so heavy as she struggled to stay awake. She wasn't ready to leave him...
"Manami...Manami...?" Sasuke kept calling her in hope she would somehow answer, "Manami, can you hear me?"
"Sasuke-kun? Is that you, Sasuke-kun?!?"
"M-MANAMI?!?" He sounded desperate. "Please, stop playing around..."
His voice hardly above a whisper.
"Sasuke-kun, are you still there?" She prayed to talk to him, even if only for a second. Only to say that she truly loved him. "I can't see you anymore.."
She silently sobbed. This wasn't the way she wished to bid goodbye. she wanted to say something at least...She had wished for so many things, she had received none.
"'Nami!!!"
Quickly she grabbed a pan and wrote down something. It wasn't written neat, but who cared at a moment like this.
"Wake up...Manami..."
She dropped the pen as she held and released her last breath, her body went limp. She was gone, forever.
"M-Manami?!?"
It was too late.
As she was being whisked of on a gurney, the note fell out of her hand. Shaking, Sasuke stared at the blank-side of the paper before picking it up and turning it around:
"Goodbye, solitaire, until tomorrow." It said.

If Sasuke had one great fear, one he held only to himself, it was that if he eventually did manage to write a true story about her, it would go wrong and she wouldn't be alive at all.
Now, that she wasn't there anymore, he felt the need to write about her.
He couldn't save her back there, but he couldn't let her soul die either. He needed to tell the world about her.
Just...not yet.
Someday he'll certainly do it, when he will be more confident and understand his own power...

Whenever she appeared in his dreams, she was always smiling.
When he proceeded to approach her, the smile on her face grew with every step he took toward her.
Finally, after hundreds of steps he was there, within her reach. She put her hands on his face and kissed him. It was the sweetest thing and his heart filled to the point of breaking. He felt it crack and shatter and the pieces fell next to her feet.
Taking a piece, he held it out to her and hoped that she would accept it.
"Please, it's been yours anyway."
She reached out, but he always woke up before she could touch it.

Four months passed and it was time. Sasuke was finally ready to write about her, he had waited long enough.
When he started a story, it came relatively easy. He wrote without pauses, knowing that he needed to finish this story and not just for her.
It was tragic and it hurt, but it meant something. At least it did to him.
It also held resolution and peace promises of something new.
When he took a small break, he closed his eyes and refreshed his memories, imagining her dance. It was grace, beauty and freedom and as he focused on her image in his head, something powerful filled him; half relief, half unidentifiable and he thought he felt something in him break.
He would never see her dance again.
Opening his eyes again, he decided he that he had to keep her memories alive, he needed them to live himself.
The change showed in his writing. His prose began to speak of loss and longing, pride and forgiveness, friendship and even something embarrassingly like desire.
He remembered vividly when Manami wrote down a simple question, that had made him clutch the fabric over his heart in pain.
"Sasuke, I want wings of satin when I die, will I get them?"
"Hush darling," he had replied, "you won't need the wings, because you're not going to die."
Somehow he had been right. She didn't die, she became an angel, with her satin wings.
His pen poured out emotion with the ink and for the first time he thought that maybe he could write a story that would bring her back to live, for him anyway...

Kakashi-Sensei wanted to know when Sasuke was coming back to the dance-school and it startled him, when Sasuke told him that he wouldn't be. He was not a dancer.
The teacher asked what he would do instead, and surprisingly, Sasuke handed him a story.
As he read, Sasuke thought back about Manami's words (which she had written down on his hand back then), "you should dance if you want to."
"I don't," he had told her, pulling her in an gentle embrace as she had nestled closer in the crook of his neck.
"Sasuke, your dancing held strength, but this holds beauty. Please," Kakashi-Sensei said as he handed the pages back to Sasuke. "Be a writer."

Sasuke began a new story. This one was simple, no heart-shattering realizations or poetic emotions. Manami had been a girl at heart for years now. All he had to do was show it.
The going was slow, because he could manage few words of truth each day. As the story progressed he felt her presence. Every day he felt her presence longer then the day before, and lastly he made a small place in the centre of his heart, and she would always remain there.
Suddenly he thought he heard her sobbing with relief and joy. Sasuke had became a writer.
He was about to pick up his story, when a little note caught his attention. He unfolded the piece of paper and read the words.
"Sasuke," she had written, "I'll be always in your heart."
Sasuke's lips, drawn with a thin line, formed a small smile as a single tear rolled down his cheek. It was indeed the sweetest thing, but this time, nothing broke.
"You better be, Manami-koi."
He was a knight once, more hers than anyone's in the end.

"Manami, fly to the most beautiful sky...
...where we made a promise.
No matter how many times your wings break, keep trying.
Your wish is seen trough my eyes, it shines brightly with your happy face. Let you satin wings catch onto the wind.
I will always look back at the miracle that I came across, the pleasurable line. Love.
I'll love you even if I'm hurt or lost.
I love you so much that even I became speechless, what do I have to do so that I can see you again?
I want to hold tighter, because I trust you, Manami.
One day I will see you again, because like most of the people I think:

It's never the right time to say goodbye."
