Today was my first day as an intern at Sacred Heart Hospital. And to be honest, I was very nervous. As I made my way up the steps and walked through the automatic sliding doors to the main lobby, I walked quietly up to the receptionist's desk where I was greeted by the sound of someone yelling. Turning to my left, I could see that a man no older then his early forties walks through the large door way to stand in front of the receptionist's desk right next to me. He was followed by a younger man in dark blue scrubs with a long sleeved shirt under it.
"Listen here Newbie, I don't--nor do I care, what you and Gandhi do in your spare time," snapped the older doctor, turning to face away from the man he had called Newbie to face a young Latina nurse who had been standing there listening to the short conversation. She handed the doctor three charts that contained the information he needed for his patients.
I watched the three of them quietly, but as soon as the doctor turned to leave to his right he crashed right into me, causing the charts that he had just gotten from the nurse to spill to the floor. "For the love of all that is sane in this god damned hospital, watch where you're going you incompetent idiot!" he shouted at me.
"You're the one who wasn't looking where he was going, you grumpy old man. God damn and it wouldn't kill you to have some breath mints either. Two words dude, tic tac... As in you need some. Whoever told you dragon's breath was the new fresh breath apparently needs to send in a complaint for false advertising to Stone Age monthly." I waved a hand under my nose as to emphasize my point.
The man before me cocked an eye brow at me. "Excuse me? I don't know who you are but here's some advise for you, watch to whom you're speaking too little girl."
"You don't threaten me, old man. Last I checked I had the freedom of speech, now go on your merry way and try to ruin someone else's day."
With that said the older man growled at me and picked up the spilt charts and left the room, walking around me.
"Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard someone back talk Dr. Cox like that, you Miss, are my hero." I looked at the younger man before me. He had bluish-grey eyes and dark brown hair, he was tall and lanky and looked somewhat attractive.
"I think someone should have him prepped for surgery and have that stick removed from his ass. Anyway, my name is Billie, I'm the new intern."
The woman behind the desk was soon joined by an older woman in her early fifties. She was of African-American descent, but she seemed very motherly and very wise for her age, well, that was my impression of her anyways. "We've been expecting you, my name is Carla, and this here is Laverne and the young man next to you is J.D., you've got a lot of courage to be standing up to the Residency Director."
"Lots of experience from my childhood," I stated bluntly. It was true, from elementary school to high school; I started taking shit from no one and became my own person.
"Well Billie, J.D. will be the person in charge of you, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask Laverne or myself for help."
"Okay."
I turned to J.D. and follow him to the locker rooms where I shoved my messenger bag into an empty locker and once again followed him out back into the halls, where we were both greeted by a blue-eyed, blond haired, bundle of energy that seemed to not shut up. I eyed her quizzically and watched as she and J.D. talked. "Elliot, this is Billie the new intern."
"Hello, Billie. I heard from Carla that you gave Dr. Cox quite the tongue lashing, well done." She clapped her hands together.
"Well if it isn't the Sissy Squad." That voice, the voice that sounded like a lawnmower running over a large rock. I turned around to see Doctor Cox standing there with his arms folded over his chest. An irritated looked on his face told the three of us that he was in no mood to be messed with.
"What is it with you and teasing us? Jeez, don't you have anything better to do? Or are you really that bored?" I asked, not really caring about the look he was giving me.
"Newbie, Barbie, if you both value your lives I suggest that you go back to work while I have a word with the new intern here."
Elliot and J.D. bolted within a blink of an eye. Why were they scared of Dr. Cox? He's just a guy with an overly large ego. I looked at him dead in the eyes, waiting to see what he was going to say next. "You have guts, I give you that, but if you ever, and I mean EVER do that again, I will make your life a living hell."
"Like I said, Dr. Cox, you don't threaten me, I've been through hell. I come from a family where it's every man, woman, and child for themselves. In Japan, by the time you start middle school, you're considered an eligible adult I've been through all the ups and downs this world has had to offer, so get off of my back and get on with your life." I walked away, not really caring about the looks I was receiving.
Today may have been my first day at Sacred Heart, but I was already thinking of it as hell on earth. I made my way to the elevator and hit the button for the last floor. I could feel my anger building up as memories from my screwed up child hood resurfaced but I shoved them back into the darkness where I kept all of my undesired memories.
Little did I know, Dr. Cox had started picking on the other interns that had just started their rounds.
-Cafeteria-
I poked at the food that was on my plate. I wasn't hungry so I just kept poking at it, watching it as I pushed it around on my plate.
So deep in my thoughts, I didn't even realize that four people had sat down around me. Looking up I saw Carla and J.D. along with Elliot, the last person sat at the head of the table. He was bald, and by the color of his scrubs, I could tell he was a surgeon, hell, even his work badge said in big block letters "Surgeon".
"Billie, this is my brown bear Turk Turk this is Billie, the new intern that gave Dr. Cox the tongue lashing."
"Nice to meet you," we said in unison, shaking hands with each other.
It was then, as if on cue, Dr. Cox showed up at our table but I didn't look up at him like the others had. No, I kept my gaze straight ahead and stared at the orange-red colored wall on the other side of the lunch room.
"Gandhi, I need you to consult a patient of mine for the surgery he is requesting. Barbie and Newbie, I want you to test another of my patients for anything wrong, it seems that the medication for his illness isn't working. Carla, have L.B. here help you with Newbie's patient in room 106."
I looked up at him. "Let me guess what those initials stand for Little Bitch?"
He held my gaze for at least five seconds and then walked away without a smartass comment. "Hey Billie How are you able to do that with out flinching?" asked J.D.
I turned my attention towards him. "Do what?" I asked, rather confused.
"Stand up to him like that?"
"That's Something I'd rather not talk about It involves me going deep into my past and pull out the dark memories" I mumbled, not realizing that I had gotten up and left all four people at the table. I could feel their gaze on my back as I walked through the double doors of the cafeteria into the hallway which consisted of empty beds, several unused heart monitoring and I.V. machines.
What startled me more was the fact that as soon as I walked out of the cafeteria, I found Dr. Cox standing there, looking at me as though I had something on my face. "Never, in my years of working here, has any intern stood up to me. Not even Newbie has had the balls to do so."
"Then I guess I'm the first to start a revolution."
"I don't really say this, actually EVER say this, to any of my interns, but would you like to go to the bar and have a few drinks with me?" he asked, crossing his arms over his chest, waiting for my reply.
"Sure, Doctor Cox," I replied, smiling to myself as I walked past him and headed for the locker room to grab something from my bag.
