Soon we had briskly walked far enough to come upon a waterfall, its ice glistening and hugging the water almost protectively. But to our misfortune, it was melting rather quickly, large chunks of ice breaking off piece by piece, revealing the racing dark blue water below. I looked down on it worriedly, Lucy softly clutching my hand while Peter and Susan stood on either side of me.
"The shortcut is melting!" gasped Susan fearfully.
I rolled my eyes and sighed at her, turning my head to her with an eyebrow raised. Children, meet Captain Obvious' first mate!
Again I exhaled, softly shaking my head, and grabbing Lucy's hand tighter in my own and beginning to drag her away.
"We need to cross, NOW!!" I ordered looking over my shoulder, already making my way with Lucy clinging onto me.
Lucy suddenly stops for a moment, stopping me, and looks to Mr. Beaver.
"Don't beaver's make dams?" she asks hopefully, her innocent blue eyes a bit wide.
"I'm not that fast, dea'!" Mr. Beaver replies, holding out his furry brown paws to make his point.
Lucy sighs, discontented, so I give her hand a light squeeze of reassurance. She looks up, her eyes twinkling, and a soft smile crawls across her face. I do the same, not noticing how Peter was looking at mewho was, my good people, in a dreamy, trancelike state, and STILL staring at me. My eyes flicked up at him, and he lightly blushed and turned away. My left eyebrow rose in suspicion, and a light blush also streaked my face when I FINALLY realized what I had caught Peter doing. I softly cleared my throat, quickly blinking a few times.
"Er, right then. Onward, we go." I stated, clearing my throat a few more times, still thinking about what had happened, and continuing on the way to the shortcut across the river.
Peter began to follow on behind me, but as my cobalt orbs looked past him, Susan was still rooted to her spot like the stubborn mule she is. She reached out and seized my shoulder, whipping me back around forcefully.
"Wait, we should just THINK about this for a minute!" she claimed, digging her nails into her palms indignantly and her eyes a mix of fear and tenacity.
"We don't have a minute!" I snapped irritably in return, glaring at her for trying to be smart. We are probably about to have no possible way to get out of here, and SHE wants to STOP, and THINK for a minute!! -________-
"I was just trying to be realistic..." she defended, standing a little straighter and her slim brown eyebrows furrowed.
I rolled my eyes--AGAIN!!--furiously, and whipped back around. I held my index finger up quickly, and was about to snap something back at her, when Peter stepped in for me.
"NO, you're trying to be smart! As usual!" he said exasperated, his blondish-brown eyebrows furrowed from the same amount of infuriation.
He turned back to me and Lucy, and rested his hands on our backs, lightly pushing us forward. A bit astonished at what he had done, I mouthed a 'thank you' to him anyway, slowly lowering my accusing index finger as I made my way ahead of him. He only gave a second's lingering glance at me, then returned to looking forward. We walked speedily down the pathway, the turns and narrow curves nearly making me loose my footing. I lead us alla staid me, a troubled Lucy, an irritated Peter, and a petulant Susanto the edge of the frozen waterfall. I continue to clutch Lucy's hand as I again look worriedly over the premises. I sigh inwardly, and hand Lucy's hand to Peter. Peter shoots me a confused look, but I simply disregard him. I cautiously step forward and tap the toe of my boot on the ice. No cracking.
'Well...at least now I'm assured that I'm not gonna die....right now, that is...' I thought to myself miserably, my sadistic-ness finally getting to me in the spur of the moment.
I divided my weight to my foot, slowly stepping on the ice. I still don't fall through.
'Okay, this is good....'
I place my left foot in front of the other. This time, IT FALLS STRAIGHT THROUGH. The ice cracks with an eerie screeching sound, and the next thing I comprehend is that my entire leg is through a hole, mixing uncannily with the racing water below. I hissed through clenched teeth as the newly formed cuts on my leg burned and bled, the icy water not making it much better. The others gasped in fright, Susan with her hands over her mouth, Lucy digging her face into Susan's jacket, and Peter already reaching for me with one outstretched hand, an extreme-terror-filled expression on his handsome face.
"Nat! Reach for me!" he called, more panic filling his voice within every word.
I gave several grunts, vainly trying to tug my leg out of the hole. I soon heard barking close to my ear. Summer. I actually almost forgot she was here.....
She tugged on my cloak, desperately trying to get me out. I could still hear Peter screaming for me to hang on to him, but his words were blurred to my ears as my leg began to get numb. Yet I could still feel the merciless pain that was being inflicted, like tiny pincers were pinching me and doing anything it could to cause my demise. Squeezing my eyes shut tight, I use the arm strength that remained to grab onto the first thing that my hands touched. It was extremely furry, to say the least. I hadn't bothered to open my eyes, because I thought it was Summer that I had grabbed onto. That is....until she growled at me. I slowly lifted my heavy eyelids, my eyes searching inquisitively for what I thought was Summer. Whoops, turns out it wasn't. It was someone from the stupid wolf squad. So no WONDER Peter hasn't been screaming for the past 5 minutes! Oh wait, the wolf is about to bite my freaking head off. I screamed shrilly as the wolf's jaws neared my face, large globs of saliva dripping from it. Its warm breath covered my face, making me gag as I shrieked; man, have they ever even HEARD of the fairies' mouth cleansing solution?! I gathered enough energy to shove the wolf out of my face and continue struggling against the unrelenting river.
"Restrain her!" I heard a gruff voice bark.
Not long after, I found myself surrounded by almost half of the wolf squad, each growling at me with the same intense loathing. One pounced upon the section of my cape that was closest to my neck, tearing the skin off and leaving red ooze to drip slowly out. I inhaled a hiss of pain through my clenched teeth, sweat beading my forehead as more wolves jumped to grab me. One bounded towards me with full force, severely bashing into my left shoulder as its sharp teeth dug into it. I screamed in my mouth, my eyes shut tight to seal in any run-away tears. My fists tightened, and finally after a few seconds of suffering, I punched a wolf out of my face. I felt cracking bones against my knuckles, and the animal howled in pain and backed away as quickly as it could. I smirked in triumph. Well, this should be easy...
I suddenly remembered my daggers that I kept in my belt.
'Damn it, yeah, this is just the BEST time to SUDDENLY remember that you own those!' I thought to myself sarcastically, tugging one out as best as I could.
I quickly looked up to see Maugrim talking to Peter, while he held out his sword and slowly backed away. Susan was also yelling something at him...probably trying to convince him not to fight....*pfft*. And little Lucy clutched fearfully on Susan's jacket, poking her head out from behind her to see what was going on. But I had my own problems to deal with. I slashed at the noses and bodies of the wolves, keeping an eye out for any weaknesses. One wolf once again leapt for my throat. My eyes widened, realizing just how keen they were to be rid of me, and a monster of anger roared in my chest. I sprung upwards, taking my leg out of its icy prison. Now these wolves are gonna get it!
