Hanging with friends. The major and probably the most popular past time known to the world. Laughing till tears fall, joking till you fall off of your seat. In this particular story, as I regret to inform you, implies this enjoyable, carefree act. It all started in the summer of 96. Sam and her friends decided to go camping for their last summer together. Being a freshly graduated senior, she was dedicated to having a good time. Her plan was to spend a week out in the middle of no where with her bestest buddies, David Bouenger and Becca Manting. Of course, sometimes fate has a way of changing your plans, and making them near unbearable. Or so it would seem in the beginning.
"Now Samantha, you have your tooth brush?"
"Yes mom."
"Clean clothes for a week?"
"Yes mom."
"Cell phone, sleeping bag, pillow, matches, food, drinks, brush, socks, hair ties, extra pair of shoes, wat-"
"MOM! I have it all. Don't worry; I'll be fine, promise." She said as she tied everything down in her 4x4 yellow TJ jeep, allowing her mom to return back inside, mumbling worries to herself. She smiled when seeing David's Ford Bronco pull up, along with Becca's Dodge Ram.
"Hey Sam! Whose car are we taking?" Becca asked as she hoped her unusually short stature of 5'2 out of her raised truck. You stood there, looking at David as he walked up to join the newly founded conversation.
"Um, I don't know, David, what car do you want to take?"
"I call for Sam's jeep. It'll fit all of us comfortably and not only that, I won't have to pay for any gas." They all shared a laugh as Sam's mother exited the house once again.
"Ok, let me get my bags." Becca said, looking at David and Sam. David nodding, announcing he had to do the same, before they both turned and grabbed their things and the supplies they were told to bring.
"Ok honey, I want you to call me when you get there ok? Now which camp ground are you staying at?"
"We're not staying at a camp ground mom. We're staying where dad and I stayed a few summers ago." Her mothers face dropped. Not wanting her daughter to be in the middle of no where, with two other people that was her age. But knowing she would never be able to talk her daughter out of it, she nodded. Sam noticed the distress in her eyes.
"Mom, we'll be ok, I promise. I love you, but we got to get there before sun down." Sam's mom nodded as she grasped her baby in a hug.
"Ok, have fun you guys. And please be careful!" She yelled as Sam hoped into the car and turned the engine on. They all waved with smiles as they pulled out of Sam's drive way then sped down the road.
The destination of the three teenagers was a good seven hours drive. During this time in the car, Becca tried to change the radio station, David tried to get the opportunity to drive, and Sam tried to persuade the two of them to get some late lunch. When they reached the town of Redding California, they were excited. They were about an hour or two away from their destination, allowing Sam to achieve her wishes of grabbing something to eat. They pulled into the little burger joint that Sam and her dad used to go to before they went camping.
"Welcome to Dudes, what can I get you this evening?" The lady with bleached blond hair asked with a chipper voice. Sam smiled and looked at the menu then back at her friends.
"What do you guys want?"
"Just a cheese burger and a vanilla shake." David responded to the cashier. She smiled and pushed the order into the keypad.
"Can I have the same, only I want fries with that and a strawberry shake." The woman nodded, and adding to David's order, then she looked up at you.
"Oh! I would like a cheese burger as well, but can I get a tomato on it?" The woman nodded before Sam proceeded.
"Good, then I would like a slice of tomato on mine, and fries, and make my shake vanilla and chocolate please." The woman smiled and added the last order before printing out the order and walked away. When she came back Samantha handed her a twenty.
"That'll be eighteen twenty-six."
She said, grabbing the twenty dollar bill from her. Sam smiled and waited for her change. The woman placed a dollar and seventy-four cents back into your hand, before sliding David's order to her. Sam grabbed it and handed it to him, doing the same for Becca, then waited for her own. As she grabbed hers she spun around, almost running into a tall, strong figure. She backed away as the man, who looked to be her age, maybe a few years older smiled.
"Sorry." She said sheepishly.
"My fault." She nodded slightly before she walked out of Dudes and jumped back into the car where her friends were waiting. There was something about that man. As she backed up, she caught his eye looking at her through the window paint. She looked down instantly, blocking her reddening cheeks from view. Becca nudged her when they were back on the rode.
"What?" She just shook her head as she proceeded with her dinner. They drove in silence until they were done with their dinner, and by that time the sun was starting to set. Sam, unknowingly, took a wrong turn as she was talking with her friends about different things. As the sun was almost down she started looking at her surroundings.
"Guys? I think I took a wrong turn on the highway. I can't remember this rode at all." She stated, a little hint of worry in her voice. They looked at her as she returned their gazes. They just shrugged.
"O well. I mean we have all the supplies anyway. How long have you been driving?" David asked from the back seat. Sam looked at him through the rear view mirror and chuckled, seeing him laying back, eyes closed. Not caring at all for their current situation.
"Well, I would guess for about an hour now. That's why we aren't there and the suns almost down. I call for setting up camp up here? We would just be staying one night in a camp ground, then we could start for our previous destination. Then we can see what we're doing." Both the passengers nodded as Sam started to pull off the main rode and down another dirt rode that said 'Camp Grounds'. But she missed the small print, which clearly stated in white 'Is Closed Due To Strange Creature Sightings'. Or maybe the more obvious broken chain that was still swinging on the open gate. As the jeep pulled up to one of the parking spots, the three occupants jumped out, and started to look around.
"Where is everyone?" Becca asked, a little uneasy. Sam shrugged, walking into the bathroom. It smelled, surprisingly, clean. The stalls were clean, the sinks were clean, the mirrors, hand drier, the showers in the corner, even the floors were clean.
"Becca, the bathroom looks like no one has used it for a long time. It's spotless!" Becca went wide eyed and ran into the bathroom. Before coming out, David went in to inspect the men's side. They both came out slowly.
"Guys, I don't think I'm comfortable staying here. I mean, it's a camp ground for gods' sakes! Where is everybody! And why are the bathrooms so clean? And why did it take us an hour to get here. I've never seen a camp ground like this before." Becca said almost hysterical. Sam placed her hands on her shoulders, calming her down.
"Becca. Don't you think this is a good thing? I mean, no ones here to tell us to be quiet, the bathrooms are somehow immaculate." Becca dropped her head, and nodded.
"I guess you're right Sam." Sam nodded and went back to the jeep and started unloading her things.
After setting up camp, which the three of them succeeded in the nick of time. They started a little fire in one of the fire pits, which was located in the middle of their tent circle. They laughed, told ghost stories, roasted marshmallows, and even fell off their chairs every now and then. Until it reached two in the morning, and each of them started slouching and their eyelids started growing heavy.
"Guys, I got to use the restroom." Sam said, getting up.
"Do you want me to go with you?" Sam chuckled while shaking her head.
"No Becca, I think I can handle using the restroom by myself." She said as she walked towards the bathroom. They made sure to get the closest camp site to the bathrooms, so Becca wouldn't have to walk a long ways at night. As Samantha entered the dark restrooms, she herd a rustling. She quickly turned the light on and expected the room. When she found nothing she preceded with her business. As she went to the dry her hands off she herd a blood curdling scream. Racing out of the bathroom, she almost slipped on something that seemed to be dripping on the sidewalk. She looked down to see a crimson liquid on the ground. Her eyes widening, she looked towards the camp to see a large, hairy creature, slumped over the place that Becca sat. She started to jog towards the site, but slammed on the breaks when seeing the creature turn around quickly. It's crimson eyes almost matching the crimson liquid that dripped from it's whiskers. Sam's eyes went wide when she saw who lay beyond the creature. She had to try her hardest not to let the tears fall as she saw David, slumped out on his seat, blood running from his neck. The creature kept it's eyes on her as she searched for the Becca. But she was no where to be found.
"Becca!" She yelled. She only received a whimper which came from behind her. She slowly turned around to see Becca holding her right side, and by the light of the moon, she saw the Crimson fluid she had tripped on a few seconds ago.
"Becca." She breathed out as she ran to her friends' aid. She removed her hand to check her wounds, to find four rather large deep claw marks in her flesh.
"Sam...get out of here." She chocked out. Samantha just shook her head in response.
"Come on, lets-" She stopped when seeing the creature advance towards them. Her eyes widened to the size of saucers. It's teeth barred and it's claws reflecting the moons light. Becca grabbed her arm, as she starred at Sam blankly before falling unconscious. Sam shook her, calling her name, while looking where the creature was at. She looked at the pool of blood that was surrounding her, and quickly came to the conclusion that she had let one of her best friends die by letting her bleed out. Sam started to freely let tears roll down her cheeks as she looked up. Gasping to see the creatures' foot in front of her. She slowly climbed her gaze up until she saw the creatures eyes twinkle with delight. She looked over at David to find half his side gone. She quickly looked back onto the creature. Becca and David were officially gone. What was she to do? Run? That seemed to best fit her situation as she gently replaced Becca's body on the ground. The creature, which seemed to be a mix between an oversized dog, and a bear, flashed its teeth as it watched her set her friends' body on the ground. She slowly got up, keeping eye contact.
"I think...I should go." She said before taking a step, thinking a peaceful way out was in sight. When the creature went back onto all fours in defensive position, she knew she was dead wrong. It bore it's teeth once again as it raised its left paw up. As it brought its paw down forcibly, Sam booked it to the right and quickly out of sight. Her grey eyes tracing the dark scenery as her mind quickly contemplated what was happening, and where she should take her next step. She quickly herd footsteps behind her, and they were advancing fast. She jumped over fallen trees, ducked under branches, and even had to dodge a couple trees. After a good half hour of straight running, her lungs started to burn, her legs started to hurt, and she could still hear the ever advancing steps of that . . . thing. As her mind started to scream stop an old, Victorian style mansion came into view. Her hopes for help sky rocketed. She advanced quickly towards what seemed to be the back door and started pounding on it.
"Please! Please let me in! Someone please!" She screamed as she saw the creature stop at the edge of the forest. Why did it stop? She wondered, turning back to the door when she herd about five locks being unhinged from the other side.
"Yea? Who is it!" An older woman yells irritably through a dead lock chain.
"Please! There's something after me! It killed both my friends' and-" She slammed the door in her face. Sam's eyes went wide in shock. She looked back at the creature to find it had disappeared. Sam turned her attention quickly back onto the door when she felt a gush of cold air rush over her heated face.
"Come in side. Quickly!" The older woman said, ushering her in, before looking out side then slamming the door and locking about six or seven dead bolts. Samantha spun around when the woman placed her hand on her shoulder.
"Where did you come from my dear?" Sam scanned her thoughts for a second before answering.
"Um, The camp ground . . . I actually don't know how far it really is. But I came from the camp ground that was near here. But I need help. Something attacked and killed both my friends' I was camping with then it chassed me till here. Please, my car is still out there with my belongings, not to mention my friends'!" The woman looked taken back for a moment from Samantha's sudden outburst of fear. Then a look of fear flashed upon her own features as they started to hear heavy footsteps above them.
"Oh dear! Come here! And be quiet!" She said in an urgently hushed tone, as she gently shoved Sam into what seemed to be the pantry. She was about to ask what was going on when she saw a tall figure enter the room. The man seemed to be about six foot four, which would tower over Samantha by about eight inches, and had a muscular build. His white dress shirt draped over his back gently with his sleeves rolled up. His black dress pants draping his legs in a pleasing fashion. His hair seemed to be spiked and looked to shine the color of dirty blond from the lighting in what she came to know as the kitchen.
"Mandy? Did I hear someone else down here?" His silky, almost perfect voice rang through the dead silence of the kitchen. Immediately Sam knew she shouldn't and wouldn't talk. There was something about this man that seemed like he was the master of the house, or something along those lines.
"No sir. No one. Why would you hear anyone? No one even knows this place is out here." She stated, hiding her fear for this man well. There was silence until the man asked her to leave calmly. She nodded and before leaving, caught Samantha's eyes in a fearful gaze. Right as the woman, or Mandy, exited, the pantry doors flew open, and there stood a man. A beautiful man to be exact. Samantha's breath was caught in her throat as she starred up into his crystal blue eyes. His facial features were as angels.
"Um . . . hi?"
