I think it's time for a backtrack here.
The whole expereince was overwhelming from the start.
So.
Time to take inventory.
In the last 24 hours, I've gained-
1. A new family.
2. Some serious money (that I still have no idea what to do wtih...)
3. A new room in a new place.
4. Some guy that I'm supposed to marry.

I've lost a lot too, though. Don't believe that it's all peachy.
I'm away from my family (The Silva's, not my parents... They don't count...) I'm away from my horse. I'm starting a new school.
I'm scared out of my mind.
But back to the events at hand.
There I was, riding around New York City in a Mercedes, shopping at the most expensive stores I'd ever heard of with a boy who'd easily pass as a model back in Texas.
And somehow, I wasn't completely enjoying it all.
Sure, the novelty was fun.
But honestly, would you be comfortable?
Yeah.
I didn't think so.

Evan and I stepped out of Saks with a few bags. I hadn't bought much, just a few blouses and a pair of pants. Evan had also insisted that I buy a prada purse because (and I quote) "Girls here all have those. You'll need one." This statement disturbed me on many levels. One, Evan is expecting me to be like any other girl. No. And the girls here from what I understand seem to be superficial. Everyone carries a Prada? Is he serious??
We left the bags in his car, precariously parked on the street. He fed the meter, absurdly unconcerned with the traffic that streaked within 6 inches of his black Mercedes and its perfect paint job.
We then made our way down the road to a few more stores that I'd never heard of where I found some things for my room. I decided on a blue/green color-scheme. Then we walked a few blocks down to a book store where Evan was amazed at my need for volumes he'd never heard of. I made him carry several bags back, claiming that my feet hurt.
"You're lying," he said, arching his eyebrow. I just smiled and skipped ahead of him. He made it to the car and put the books in the trunk, but I'd passed the car and was staring intently into the window of a small pet store around the corner. There was an adorable miniature dachshund puppy with piebald spots and very sweet eyes.
Evan came up behind me, obviously irritated that I wasn't at the car. One look at my face, and he could tell that he was doomed.
"OK, Evan, I know you've been putting up with my odd shopping habits all day, but one more thing. Do you think your dad would mind terribly if I got a puppy? I really miss having animals around, and since I grew up on a farm, being in a city is so weird, and.."
He disappeared into the store and talked to a woman over the counter for a few moments, He returned to the door and gestured for me to come in. He led me to the pen full of puppies and said "Which one?" I looked up into his face, trying to see how long it would take him to laugh and say "Ha, gotcha!" But he didn't. He waited patiently.
"Your sure your dad wouldn't mind?"
"My dad loves dogs. Pick one. I've always wanted an animal around."
I shrugged and searched out the dachshund I'd glimpsed earlier through the window. I pointed and the woman from the counter entered the pen and extracted the chubby little lump of a puppy and handed her to me rather unceremoniously.
I stood in disbelief.
This was happening oddly fast...
Evan paid for her and took my hand. I writhed a little under his touch, but he didn't seem to notice as he continued to drag me out of the shop. The puppy gazed in wonder at the new world around her. We soon reached Evan's car and got in. After a few minutes of driving, we were back at the Dakota. We took the elevator up, chatting lightly.
"What are you going to name it?"
"'It' is a girl. HER name is... Well, I don't know yet. What do you think?"
He looked at her intently for a moment, then said with all seriousness -
"Xena."
I arched my eyebrow at him, then said "No. Absolutely not. She's way too cute for that."
"Well, you're not going to name her Fluffy."
"And why not?"
"Because I paid for her."
"Did you hear that Fluffy? Evan is trying to exhert his authority over me with use of a credit card!"
Evan chuckled a bit.
I smiled in spite of my what my gut was telling me.
There were a few moments as the elevator reached our floor. The doors slid open and I said "Dolly."
"Dolly?"
"Yes, Dolly. She's such a doll, the name just fits," I said with a smile. Evan opened the door to our floor and let me through first.

Elaine met us as we walked into the main hall.
"Holy crap, Evan, you bought a puppy?!"
She rushed down the balcony stairs and took Dolly from me, talking in a baby voice and holding her up to her face. I laughed at her fascination. She gave her back after my new puppy had gained quite a following. Mr. and Mrs. Donnelly had come to see what the fuss was about. With one glace, Mr. Donnelly had summoned Carl and began whispering into his ear. He nodded and left.
"Mr. Donnelly, is this OK?" I asked, sincerely worried that I would lose my new baby.
"Perfectly fine, I was just sending Carl out to get some things for her." I smiled happy and relieved, and turned back to my puppy and saw her in Evan's arms, who looked quite taken with her little face. She licked his nose and he smiled.
In that moment, I saw a new side of Evan. Sure, I'd seen him laugh and smile, but this was Evan open. Unguarded. He was beautiful. I was staring when he looked back up at me.
"What?"
I felt my cheeks flush.
This situation was growing more and less complicated at the same time.
I was supposed to marry him.
I was starting to get feelings for him.
He was still despondent.
At least I knew he had a heart.
Of course anyone who looked at Dolly would melt...
