"If you don't mind me asking, how'd you come to be like this?" I didn't think I had said anything wrong until he turned to me with a frightening face and nearly growled, "I told you, I was at Alkalai Lake!"
"Sorry." I muttered, standing up and walking back to the stove to fill his mug again with chicken broth. Something bad must've had happened to this man for him to just shut himself down, my mind spoke, but because I had been alone for a month and was used to speaking aloud to myself, I replied, "I wonder what though..."
I jumped for the second time at his voice when he spoke again, "What was that?" His anger and pain seemed to radiate off of him as I blushed a light pink, though it wasn't noticeable since my face with almost always distilled with pink.
"N-nothing." I mumbled, walking over briskly to him and handing him the mug, "I'm just used to talking to myself."
He seemed intrigued by my words, for his eyebrow raised, "Why, you live alone?" I just blinked as he sipped on his broth; he wanted to know about me and my life, why should I tell him when he wouldn't speak of his own?
Because he told you he is a mutant, shouldn't he deserve the same courtesy? I sighed deeply and started pulling my hair, a nervous habit of mine, "Yes, I'm also a m-mutant." It hurt to say those words because for that reason, my father, my only friend, my only family, had been killed.
"Oh." Several minutes passed before I spoke up, somehow finding the courage to do so, "You said you are what powers do you posses?"
A flicker of a smile showed, and then quickly disappeared, "Lasers, from my eyes, that's why I need my glasses." I nodded, then blushed, remembering his eyes were closed, "Oh. Has anything ever happened to you, like, um, something bad because of your powers?"
I must have hit another sore spot because he went quiet and sipped at his broth repeatedly, not speaking, "I'm sorry." I quickly apologized, pulling on my hair once more, "It's just, I lost my father because of my powers..."
Again, he seemed intrigued and I somehow felt I could trust him, "We were just walking in the mountains one day and well, one thing led to another and there was an avalanche, seven people died, along with my dad, but fate must not like me, because I lived and am forced to relive that day every minute of every hour of every day." A lone tear fell, but it was quickly wiped away, "Feel like you can trust me yet?"
He shook his head, then it turned to a nod, "I lost the love of my life." And that's all he said, That must be her name, Jean.
Maybe it was just me, but when I took another look at him, I realized how handsome he really was. His brown hair was ruffled in almost all directions and his features seemed very soft. I just sat there, staring at him for a minute before he spoke again, "What are you doing?"
"Nothing." I mumbled, getting up again and just walking around, looking outside, anything to keep me occupied and away from Scott.
"I didn't mean anything by that, I just don't trust easily." I nodded my head, this time not really caring that he couldn't see me do it, "If you lived in the mansion, you'd understand why. Every time I find her, she leaves me..." He mumbled the last part, and I probably shouldn't have heard, but I did.
"You live in a mansion?" I felt stupid sitting here, having brought him to a small log cabin, "Sort of, it's a school, in the United States. It's for mutants, it helps them learn to control their powers, so hopefully later on in their lives they can live normal, fulfilling lives."
"So, you live at a school?" I questioned, somewhat confused, "Why?"
He laughed loudly and I blushed, why was it so funny? "Ayden, I am, was, a teacher there." His slightly happy mood vanished and was replaced with the one before, full of sadness and just seeing him like this made me feel slightly sad, "I have to get back."
"You can't in this weather," I turned to the window and drew images on the glass, "The storm's pretty big, but it'll be over soon enough." I turned back to him to see him pulling the compressor from his boxers, "First aid." Was all I said in my defense and I thought I saw a smile, but I may have been wrong, "How long do you think it'll be before I can leave?"
So he is going... I didn't bother trying to sound happy, not that I thought I could, "At the longest, a day." He nodded and looked like he was relaxing, then I realized he probably wanted sleep, "Oh, um, you can sleep in my cot if you want, it's not too warm, but it's better then the floor."
He turned to me, eyes still shut and asked, "What about you?"
"I'll be fine, honestly." I was lying, but he need sleep more than me, I walked over to him and grabbed his arm, "Here, I'll help."
He followed, reluctantly, and I led him to the cot, "Thanks Ayden, for everything." It may not seem like something big, but for two seconds, I actually smiled, as he lay down and almost instantly fell asleep.
He pretty cute, but he is leaving; besides he said he lost the love of his life. Maybe he'll be gone before I wake up tomorrow, then I won't embarrass myself any further.
As he slept, soundly, I added more wood to the fire to make sure it would last for a little while longer and thought, about nearly everything that came to mind. My father, mother, life, the mountains, Alkalai Lake, even the mysterious man, otherwise known as Scott who was currently laying in my bed.
Wow, he's laying in my bed. I snuck a look at him, even asleep, he seemed restless, anxious, sad, everything he had been when he was awake, even mad. I felt bad for him, I'd never been in love, so I didn't really know that type of heartbreak, just the heart break of losing a parent... or in my case, both.
