Lenny. Lenny Cormack, the great maker of canary cream pies. If anyone was going to start a conversation, it wouldn't be me. I had absolutely no anticipation talking with him. And so I stood there a bit shocked thinking about how he might have not seen me and I could make a break for it. Unfortunately being the recognizable kid I was (note the sarcasm) he saw me.
"Natty!" he screamed in excitement. Natty. Ugh, I hated that. Why did he have to call me that!? He had absolutely no right, from my side, to call me NATTY! But my injustice mother allowed him to. "What are you doing out here?"
He asked, his dark brown eyes lighting up with curiosity.
Why do you care, you're not my dad.
Of course, I hadn't said that, otherwise there would've been some more grounding and many lectures from my mother and let's not forget my conniving sisters.
I didn't smile, but simply told him what I had told my mother only in a shorter form.
Luckily for me, he smiled and said that he would meet me at my house when I got back. Oh wait, I guess I wasn't so lucky after all. (me: -_- this is the face she would be making at the momenthaha)
When I finally arrived at Louie's house I was nervous. Knocking on the front door never seemed to be such a hard task.
After a while of just contemplating about whether to knock or ring the door bell, the door finally opened. I gasped not expecting it to happen, and saw Henry who I called Mr. Lipinski (Louie's dad). He had a white garbage bag grasped tightly in his right hand, bulging from it what seemed to bewell garbage. He shot me a friendly smile and said
"Hey Nat."
"Hey Mr. Lipinski. How are you?"
"I'm good." He shoved the bag into a large garbage bin and paused to look at me, with concern in is eyes. "Does your mother know you're here?" he always asked that every time I came over. It wasn't that he didn't want me there, he just knew how mother really was. I told him she did and he invited me inside.
After politely thanking him for 2 glasses of lemonade (me: I love lemonade! My grandpa made some good lemonade.) I carried them upstairs to Louie's room.
"How could this happen?" I asked cynically. I didn't care at the moment if I was scaring him with my inquiries and most odd behaviour, this was a lifesort of threatening moment! Louie winced as I pounded my hand against his desk. I resented that action fully, my arm was now throbbing painfully and I was frustrated with him moving.
"The good thing is," Louie started, getting up from the bed and putting his glass of lemonade down. " my dad hasn't made a final decision yet." He smiled as if I was going to smile back at him. My jaw dropped and I squinted my eyes at him.
"You're telling me this now!" I screamed.
Someone need anger management. (me:...uh,that someone is you.) WHAT?!EXCUSE ME!But I DO NOT NEED ANGER MANAGEMENT! *throws chair at lilwiz* (me:*ducks* *raises eyebrow*)
After yelling at him insanely, with no signs of Mr. Lipinski running up, he had decided to tell me this now!
"Sorry?" he said, shrugging his shoulders. I sighed heavily and asked
"So...when does he make the final decision?" he shrugged again. I huffed at him annoyed. "Why don't we just go and ask him?"
"I guess we could do that."
And so we did. I hadn't expected to get such an answer from Mr. Lipinski, he laughed. Louie and I exchanged glances thinking he had gone a bit crazy.
"I would never think about separating two best friends." He had finally answered after laughing.
I scratched my eyebrow and shook my head.
"But isn't that what you're doing right now? I mean no offence Mr. Lipinski, I want you to have a nice job and a nice home and all, but you can't do this to us!" Louie nodded in agreement. I slapped him on the arm lightly to get him to say something as well.
"Uh...she's right dad." He said, half smiling.
Had I not taught Louie anything from our seventeen years of friendship? (me: I can't remember if I mentioned what grade Nat was inbut I'm turning it to grade 11...yah she might seem a bit childishbut it'll work for what I should have in the plot. Her older sis is in grade 12 and Kim in grade5? Yah, that's it.)
Louie's dad laughed once again. He looked us straight in the eyes and said
"You have nothing to worry about."
Nothing to worry about? Nothing to worry about! That was it? Was that all he had to say? Oh jeez, this was driving me crazy. I ruffled my hair and sighed inwardly. Shooting my head up I forced a fake smile and said
"OK."
Louie seemed to be confused but didn't say a word. He shrugged, once again, and asked
"Are you staying for dinner?" I looked to Mr. Lipinski to see if it was ok with him, of course I knew what he was going to say.
"Is it ok with your mother?"
No, probably not. But I didn't tell him that. Instead I simply stated,
"She did let me come over didn't she?" I laughed and it was agreed that I was staying for dinner. But then again Mr. Lipinski wanted me to make sure that it really was OK with her, and so I had to call her up. Not exactly what I had planned.
So Luoie's not moving? (me:...I don't know *shrugs*) but you're the writer! (me:...*thoughtfully* oh yah..)
"All right. Larry will be there to pick you up at 9:30, sharp." My mothers voice came from the other end of the line. Surprisingly she had said yes to letting me have a peaceful dinner at Louie's house. Regrettably though, Larry would have to come pick me up.
"OK, bye." I said, and quickly hung up before she changed her mind.
"Larry's coming to pick me up at 9:30." I said as I joined Louie at the table. Louie's dad set a bowl of delicious looking pasta in the middle of the table in a well designed bowl--the one that Louie had made in grade nine.
Dinner was going great and everything felt sohappy. Mr. Lipinski asked us about school and what new things were going on these days, and how the family was. Time had gone by so fast that I hadn't realized it was already 9:30. The only thing I could think about at that time was how I hadn't gotten any dessert when the doorbell rang.
Larry began talking to Mr. Lipinski but I quickly rushed him out before any further embarrassment. I strapped my seatbelt on, trying to make myself comfortable in his pepperoni smelling Honda Civic. After realizing that trying to accomplish that task was impossible, I began to shuffle through my backpack, trying to avoid a uncomfortable conversation with Lenny.
"Sohow's school?" he asked. WHY? Why oh why did he have to talk? Was it his job to make me angry every second he could?
"Fine." I said.
For someone who had broken my family apart, I would never accept them in my life. Not that the family had ever been perfect from the start, but it could have been better if he hadn't came and tore it apart! Yes that's right, Larry Cormack had broken it apart. That was the grand finale reason that I loathed him as well. But I never brought it up. My mother thought I had no clue about Lenny and her. She thought that I thought that the reason of the divorce was because my parents just weren't.that. But I knew, I knew the real reason. We all did, Sarah Kim and myself.
I blocked it out of my mind and starred out the window watching the houses pass by in colourful blurs.
"Did you finish your science project?" Lenny asked after a moment of silence.
"Huh?" I blurted out. "Oh right, the science projectuhsure." I gave him a fake smile and turned back to the window, but his dark brown eyes and messed up hair was still in my mind. Once again I state, ugh.
He kept asking me useless questions, apparently trying to "get to know me" and trying to get on my good side, which he should have even tried to do because he would never accomplish said task. Finally we arrived home, to see my mother and two sisters setting the table. Hadn't they eaten dinner yet?
(me: *singing* But just maybe, laka ukulele momma made a baby)
uhh...ok.
"We're having dessert." My mother answered after seeing my confused face. "Oh." I said and took a seat next to Kim. Lenny came in and began shuffling around with a pan and brought it to the table.
"Lenny made pancakes!" Kim shouted excitedly.
"Pancakes?" I repeated.
"Not just any pancakes." Sarah said.
I raised an eyebrow as two pancakes were set on my plate.
"Banana pancakes." Lenny smiled, and sat down digging into his own.
I starred down at my plate with my jaw slightly open.
"Who eats pancakes for dessert?" I accidentally blurted out.
"Natalie." My mother warned. I cocked my head and smiled looking to Lenny who didn't seem offended at all, oh poo.
"I thought we would try something new." Larry said.
"And besides, you should get used to it." Sarah shoved some of the dessert into her mouth.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
I laughed half- heartedly and began to eat the pancakes until my mother stopped me.
"Nat" she started. "Lenny and I have something important we want to tell you."
"Only me?" I asked, fear starting to rage in my heart. It was pumping even faster then before. It was like the feeling you got just before you get a shot, or like a car is coming right at you and you dive out of the waypossibly even worse.
I knew what she was going to say.
And it would change my life forever.
Oh my, what happens next!? (me: *singing* I'll make you banana pancakes, pretencd like it's the weekend now!) STOP SINGING and bloody tell me what's going on! (me: man..you are D-U-M-B!...no offence.) None taken...wait! HEY!
