DEATH NOTE: PLAYING WITH LIVES
Onwards! >>
"If you follow the voice of God..."
"And then, even though I didn't do anything, he snapped at me!"
"What? Then what?"
"Yagami-kun, are you listening?"
The voice of God was presented as hope for us fellow human beings. Whether or not it is a sin or a necessity, one thing is definite. Hope is not something that should be an admirable trait of us imperfect persons.
It is nothing but false anticipation for the worst to arrive.
"Please translate this sentence into English."
Faith was putting all expectancy into the mind, where we have no need of using the physical to make a revolution.
"If you obey God's teachings, the seas will be bountiful and storms will not come."
So if you didn't obey God's teachings, the seas will diminish and storms will come.
How juvenile.
Ukita Kuro stared outside the window, waiting... anticipating the arrival of the last period bell to ring. As she stared, she caught onto a notebook, manifesting from nowhere, dropping down in the slowest of pace.
In noticeable writing, it read, "Death Note".
'What a sadistic title.' She thought while quirking an eyebrow. 'Thing is... who is stupid enough to throw their notebook out of the classroom?'
"Ukita-chan, please translate this sentence into English."
Her fingers lingered by the requested page for a brief moment, analyzing the words carefully as an attempt to not make a stupid mistake. A perfectionist, she was. And she tried to justify every means of that.
Due to the matter of custom, she stood up, holding the book before her, adjusting her book in her hands, to make her hold comfortable.
"Love is patient, love is kind."
What power was laid behind the four-letters of that word. And look at the world right now. How abused the word truly was. What was say...is sometimes what we mean the least in our mind.
"It is not proud, it is not rude."
Ironic how Kuro happened to be one who was most prideful. When she spoke this sentence, she said it slowly, emphasizing every single syllable slowly and carefully, although she attempted to make it as unobvious as possible.
"It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered."
The reader of this line just happened to be one of the most short-tempered people in this class, maybe within the lining of the school. Amazing. Within these few lines, the pupils of the class have found out her most undesirable traits...although they didn't know that.
"It keeps no record of wrongs."
Oh, but she does.
She does, and it's not contained in her writing, but in her mind.
"Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth."
She can honestly say that she'd rather exult with a lie that may conceal the pain, than to rejoice with the truth that may inflict her pain.
"Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres."
Eyes stared at her, and she smirked. She wasn't one who would die for attention. But she had to admit, it was nice to receive some.
"Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things."
Once you look past what endurance supposedly was. All you will see if complete utter stubbornness. And the fact is, Kuro enjoyed this sentence the most, considering the fact that she was the most obstinate.
"Love never ends."
This line... This line was completely created out of mishap. They were three simple words; however, these three simple words were completely out of question, completely out of strata.
"Love never fails."
A dense silence cast itself among the students in the classroom. They had their eyes off of her now, but the affect of the speech was incredible. But out of the corner of her eyes, she found one pair of eyes still watching...still listening.
Unintentionally, she found herself gazing at the prodigy, the genius of the class.
Yagami Light.
"That was wonderful. As expected from you"
Love is a rather submissive statement.
She certainly didn't fancy it. No...Not fancying the word was probably one of the biggest understatements of the century.
Somewhere in the midst of her walk outside the school, her mind traveled to the book she saw earlier on in the day.
She halted in her tracks.
If it had landed opposite her building; Building A. That means it had landed right in front of Building B.
She closed her eyes in thought.
She had to, no... She must go back to retrieve the book. But she couldn't head back right at that instant. Somebody who might have been watching her from afar could get suspicious of her actions.
After all, which teenager heads back to school?
An outside whom she didn't know that in some alternate universe, was able to read her mind, may think she's a little more than paranoid.
But she wasn't.
Beautiful, compelling, breath-taking, intelligent, enduring...
Perfect.
So she was, and yet...
She wasn't.
What is seen on the outside...is a mere faade of how truly hideous the inside is. And this was no exception.
But they didn't know that.
And she hoped to keep it that way- no, she knew she'd keep it that way.
Students were watching her from each side, all interested in her movements, her structure, how she acted.
An idea suddenly struck her.
This was the true ugliness of the beast beauty. She was made of what we like to call Pride... and Avarice. At least, that's what it seemed when she was often compared to those of lower stats than that of her own.
Seemingly cruel...
She began to backtrack, eyeing the spot in the shade where the book had fallen earlier on during class session.
But something... no, somebody was already there. They had beaten her there.
She hid behind the nearest tree, where she could catch a good sight of the person who was by the area of the book. And her eyes widened when she realized it wasn't who she thought it was.
Yagami Light.
He had seen it too.
He opened it, analyzing one line, by the look of his eyes. Then, he laughed silently to himself, setting the book back on the ground. After, he turned around, beginning to walk away.
Once he was gone from sight, Kuro immediately went to inspect. She took fast steps, anticipating his re-arrival back for the book. Maybe he was also somewhat of a greedy bastard...just like she was.
Just as she laid her hands on the book, she abruptly felt somebody watching her, and she turned around, her eyes averting left to right.
Nothing.
She shook her head. 'Your paranoia is getting to you, Kuro. It's nothing. Calm down.'
Then, she opened to the first page of the book, eyeing it carefully.
How to use it
I
- This Note will note take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
- If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
- If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
- After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
She closed it.
'What a cruel joke this is.'
'But what if...'
From the back of the composition, she neatly tore out a piece of paper, folding it into a neat square and putting it in her pocket gently, making sure she didn't damage the article. She was believing the unbelievable.
Instead of taking the book with her, she set it back on the ground.
Unaware to her, somebody was watching her behind the same tree she was watching Yagami Light behind.
And he had the same scarlet eyes.
"Today, around 11:00 A.M., in an apartment in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture; a woman in her thirties was found dead, covered in blood. The Kanagawa Police are investigating it as a murder."
'It's not a damn murder,' Kuro thought, rolling her eyes. 'It should be under the subject of a damn homicide!'
"Today, in the afternoon, a man named Tofuji Naoki was arrested for raping, then murdering his 25-year old roommate."
'Damn.' She gritted her teeth, anger beginning to pulse through her veins. 'Why can't a man choose to rape his own gender for once? Why is it always the woman that ends up getting hurt?'
Yes, she had a strong feminism appeal about her.
She crossed the street, which was bustling with crowds and loads of people, swaying a bit.
'That book.' She halted in the middle of the street, unaware of the danger that she might be in. 'What if it's true...? What if it really...works?'
Car horns rang, and she waken up from her thoughts.
"Sorry!" She screamed, running to the where pedestrians would be safe...the sidewalk.
Once she arrived home, by habit, she turned on the television, leaving it on while she walked upstairs into her room to put her bags down.
"The man that indiscriminately killed and wounded six people yesterday in downtown Shinjuku is still barricaded inside this nursery school with 8 hostages...young children and their teachers."
"Hm..." She strode down the stairs, now barefoot, standing in front of the television with much interest.
"The metropolitan police have determined the man's identity. He is Otoharada Kuruo, 42 years old and unemployed."
"That gives." She spoke out loud, to nobody in particular. "But I wonder why..."
'Why would he barricade a nursery school?'
"This Note will take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected."
"Humph..." She ran a hand through her hair. "He brings disgrace to my name."
"If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen."
Her cynical thinking halted to a stop. "I wonder..."
"They are currently attempting to negotiate the release of hostages."
She began to count from that point on.
"It's hard to tell what's happening now."
"I just worry about the safety of the hostages."
"Yes, me too."
"And that is my report from the screen."
The alternate reporter was waiting back at the Newscast station, appeared on the screen. "Thank you. What do you think will happen, Hashimoto-san?"
"I'm hoping for a quick resolution." The reported replied at the scene.
The 40 seconds quickly ended, and she laughed. "Nothing happened. Wow... That was stupid of me to believe..."
Hashimoto imminently set his two fingers on his earpiece.
"Yes! This just in! The perpetrator is dead inside the nursery school! It seems the perpetrator is dead!"
"De...ad...?" She said the word slowly, emphasizing on each "syllable".
"The police are saying that they did not shoot him!"
"Could that mean that he committed suicide because he was surrounded?"
"According to the hostages, he suddenly collapsed!"
She ran her hand through her hair again. "A heart attack..."
"If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack."
Most everyone in the prep class... Most everyone didn't want to be here. There were two types of people in this class.
There were those who cared.
Then, there were those who didn't.
"Hey Ryoji," One of the more bulky looking boys advanced on a rather scrawny looking fellow, "Lend me 2,000 yen."
"S-Sudou-kun... A-Again?"
"What, do you not want to?"
Kuro grabbed her books, ignoring the sight. She did not want to get involved with anything that didn't involve her.
Selfish, greedy... Yes, she is.
"Hah!" Sudou waved a thick wad of cash around in the air, as if it was something like a play-toy. "We're going to the arcade tonight!"
It disgusted her, and yet, she still did nothing...anything at all.
And yet, she couldn't take her eyes off of the scene. There was something in that precise moment that sparked her interest. And although she didn't understand it...she certainly wanted to.
But then... her eyes wavered to Yagami Light.
He was always so silent during class time. He never spoke up unless the professor required him to. He always abided by the rules and did not displease anybody.
Maybe the world should try to act more like him.
'The stars look nice tonight.' She thought, staring up at the sky with the utmost appreciation. 'I wonder if I can go-'
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of motorcycles.
"Hey, pretty lady!"
She faced the amplification of the voice, realizing it came from one of the motorcycle riders. He had sunglasses on. Obviously, somebody was trying to look cool. It was night for God's sake. There was obviously no need for sunglasses.
He lowered it for effect. She resisted the urge to snort.
"Wanna come hang out with us?"
"Whoa, Takuo-san, she's a hottie!"
The man who she supposed was Takuo, smirked at her. She looked away in disgust, and continued walking.
"I'm Shibuimaru Takuo; Shibutaku for short."
He followed her slowly on his motorcycle, while the rest of his gang followed along with him...behind him.
Surprisingly, a feminine giggle escaped his lips. "Come with us, pretty lady!"
She shook her head, disgusted at the way he spoke. His choice of speech was completely grotesque, and his mind... She didn't even want to know what was happening in that peanut-sized brain of a lard-head.
"No thanks." She said, promptly. She would have retorted with some sassy and sarcastic remark, but she thought that was unnecessary right now.
"She says no!"
She suddenly realized that several of the motorcycles have stopped, and some of the bikers were gone.
'Damn! Takuo was just a distraction!'
She ran.
But the honest truth of it all was that she was a girl. They were boys. Boys were faster, boys had endurance. Right then, she didn't.
A poll was slid under her throat, restraining her from struggling. She let out a silent whimper, praying for somebody to help her.
She kicked and screamed. "Let me go, damn it!"
"Touch me, and I'll kill you! My dad is a cop!"
They ignored her cries of protest.
"Hold her still! Take off her clothes!"
"Oh, can I?"
Takuo's hands reached for the buttons of her shirt. But she grabbed his hands, her long nails digging into his skin. She could feel the blood that bled out from his fragile disgrace to be called hands.
He froze for a moment.
She took this to her advantage and elbowed her pursuer from behind. Then, she slid underneath the pole, running towards the other side of the street.
A motorcycle was started, and it followed her.
She didn't dare to turn back.
She didn't dare to see.
"Takuo! Watch out!"
There was the sound of shattering glass...the impact of metal.
She could hear the shards of glass fall to the ground.
So she turned around.
And she found him dead.
It took her a while to realize what had just happened. She began to shake. Trauma... It truly was a deafening experience.
She averted her gaze to something... anything that would comfort her vision.
That just happened to be the bookstore.
And who she saw in it...was Yagami Light.
He was holding it.
Re-release. Chyeah. I'm back. (:
