"Miss...miss..."

"Kortecinia."

"Yes, Miss Kortecinia. I'm sorry but we...we can't accept your application."

She let out a sigh of relief.

She couldn't handle college right now.

Not with Kyllae on the way.

Eight and a half months on the way.

Five years previous.

As Stepheon walked out the door, her eyes snapped open.

Where was she?

Oh, yes. That's right.

She fell asleep on the couch. Again.

Pushing the plump cushions down into the bottom half of the couch, she stood and stretched her sore muscles and shut off the least appreciated thing on her television, Better Halves, an early morning soap opera.

An unexpected thump greeted her ears, and was quickly followed by a sharp curse.

It had come from outside her apartment door.

Swiftly throwing on a robe and slippers, she walked to her front door and opened it as far and the chain lock would allow. Looking beyond the suddenly blindly hallway light, she saw two figures, both male, lugging a large couch into the apartment nextdoor to her's. She shut the door and leaned against it, thinking of why the Robinsons would be moving in a new couch. Slowly dragging her feet across the dark cherry wood floor, she picked up the phone and dialed the all too familiar landlord's home phone number.

"Hello, Enthert residence, Liyla speaking."

"Hi Mrs. Enthert. How are you doing?"

"Oh, hello there deary! I'm doing just fine, but how about yourself? Keeping up at the job of yours? I heard it's getting pretty hectic with all of those new bands."

The gentle voice of Deliyla Enthert was comforting to her, and she smiled when her landlord spoke thusly of her job at the record store downtown.

"Oh, I'm doing great. Yeah, it has been quite hectic, but I get through, hah. But, I was just calling to see why the Robinsons are moving new furniture in?"

She heard a slight sigh on the other end of the black telephone.

"Sweetie, I'm not sure how to tell you this, but the Robinsons both passed away two days ago while on their vacation in Georgia. Some institution escapee robbed them and gave Mr. Robinson a heart attack. Mrs. Robinson suffered the same fate later that night when she came home to find her husband on the floor not breathing. I'm so sorry."

She dropped the phone.

Picking it back up, she remembered all the times the Robinsons had been there for her. When she was only a bit older than seventeen and running away from home, they had taken her in before she had to sleep on the street. They let her stay with them, let her change her name so she could stay with them, until she came of age to move away. But she had been too connected with the sweet older couple, and had only moved nextdoor so that she could visit them without much hassle. A drop of water slid its way down her porcelain cheek. She furitively wiped it away and continued her conversation with Mrs. Enthert.

"O-oh. *Sniff* I di-didn't know th-that. *Sniff* So, there's a n-new family moving i-in nextdoor?"

"Yes, deary. Well, just two people. Around your age I think. Both very handsome young men, I might add. Last names of...just a minute, hun, I'll find their paperwork."

She heard a shuffling of papers and then a triumphant 'Aha!' from Mrs. Enthert's side of the line.

"Alright. Last names are...Urie and Ross. First names are Brendon and Ryan. Two cuties as themselves should be welcomed into the building, don't you think?"

The smile in her voice was inevitably telltale. She couldn't ignore the fact that maybe Mrs. Enthert knew what she was talking about.

"Alright, Mrs. Enthert, I'll talk to you later. It was nice chatting with you."

"Ok, sweetheart, have a wonderful day. I'll see you later."

She hung up the phone and looked at her watch.

Maybe it was time for the traditional 'Welcome to Enthert Apartment Building' welcome by the resident greeter.

Maria Kortecinia didn't know how this would impact her life.

Or, better yet, who.
Could you be any more convincing, with your disguise of lies?
