Amy rose bright and early the next morning, showered, and started blow drying her long, wavy red hair straight for work. She didn't have to go in until two-thirty, but she liked being ready early.
Amy hated her job, though. She spent the entire day sitting on her butt in a cubicle, wearing a headset in front of a computer. It was an impressive job to have as a first job, especially since Amy was so young, but it was painfully boring- literally. Amy's ass hurt from sitting on it all day. But, the job paid well, and with time, Amy could move out of her parents' house. And the fact that she had landed such a job at nineteen DID add a hint of prestige to her.
She applied make-up in front of the mirror, so her face was flawless. She reached for her favorite pair of earrings, but was puzzled to find only one. She put it in regardless and continued the search for its duplicate.
"Where the f*ck is my earring?" she asked aloud, slamming drawers.
Her search was interrupted, though, by the sound of the doorbell ringing.
Amy grunted in exasperation, took the single earring out, flung it down on the bathroom counter, and went to answer the door.
She was shocked to see William, the drunken asshole from last night, at her doorstep.
"William, what the f-"
She was cut off by him holding his hand out for her to stop.
"I got directions from Liza last night. Please hear me out."
"O...k....."
"I was an ASS last night. I know that. I had WAY too much to drink, I acted like a f*cking fool, and said some very rude things to you that I didn't mean at all. You had every right to be disgusted with me; I deserved it. But, Amy, I am SO f*cking sorry. I really am. And I'm taking you out for breakfast, I don't care if you've already eaten. I want you to meet the REAL William Beckett. You may actually like him."
Amy looked into William's big brown puppydog eyes. There was no way she could refuse.
"Well, Real William Beckett, I am pleased to meet you. That was a very sweet and redeeming apology which I fully accept, as well as your lovely invitation to breakfast. Just let me grab my purse and we'll be off."
"Your purse? No way, lady. I'm paying for yours as well. After all, I AM the one redeeming myself."
"Well, all right. But I'm taking my purse nonetheless. That's where all my sh*t is, and you never know when there will be an emergency."
Amy disappeared into her house for just a moment and returned with her purse.
"All right, Beckett, I'm ready."
"Alrighty then. And I must say, you look lovely this morning."
"Why thank you, Mr. Beckett. You came just as I had finished readying myself for work."
"Oh really? What do you do?" William asked as they drove off.
"I am a customer service representative and I f*cking hate it. Eight hours a day of constant buttsitting in a cubicle, underneath flourescent lights, isolated from all humanity other than the pissy consumers who b*tch me out via email and telephone. And sometimes I have to work weekends."
"That sounds like agony. That can't be your real passion, can it?"
"Oh, hell no. My real passion is writing. I've done it since I was seven. Apparently, I happen to be very talented at it as well. That's what those who have seen brief glimpses of my writing say, anyway."
"Sounds awesome. I'd like to see some of your writing one day."
"In due time, perhaps. I'm afraid we don't know each other well enough for that yet, Mr. Beckett."
"That's understandable. Writing can be very personal."
"Oh, trust me, it is."
"I definitely know what you're saying. I write some myself."
"A common interest. Perhaps I WILL like the real William Beckett."
"It's possible," William replied as he parked the car. "Have you ever been to this place before?"
"No, but I have always wanted to try it out, but never found the time. It seems as though the real William Beckett is a mind reader as well."
"So, he's doing good so far?" William asked as they both closed the car doors.
"Yes he is. Now, for God's sake, feed me, and DEFINITELY feed yourself."
"I eat all the time, actually."
"No way!"
"Yes!"
"Well, you are definitely what I would call one of the lucky ones," Amy said as William held the cafe door open for her.
He's doing a great job redeeming himself, Amy thought.
Once they were seated, conversation ensued.
"So, how old are you, Amy?"
"Nineteen. What about you, Beckett?"
"Twenty-one."
"Ah, drinking age."
"Yep; I have the legal right to make an ass out of myself. Much like I did last night."
"No worries about last night. I'm loving this Real William Beckett character. What do you do as a job?"
"I'm a musician. I sing in a band."
"Oh, really? That's awesome. Music is the one thing I love more than writing, even though I have no talent for it myself. What's your band called?"
"The Academy Is..."
"Seriously? That's a really great band name! Definitely sticks out in one's mind. I won't be forgetting it any time soon."
"Thank you."
"Do you have another job?"
"Nope. Just the band. We're starting to break out. I don't have time for any other job. We go out on tour again soon, but right now we're on a rare break."
"Who all have you played with?"
"Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco...bands like that."
"Wow, okay. I like both of those bands. When do I get to learn all about The Academy Is?"
"Soon, my pretty, very soon," William replied, rubbing his hands together with a jokingly devilish chuckle.
William and Amy had their breakfast, conversation continuing, until it was time for Amy to go to work.
William dropped her off, but before she shut the door, she said, "Hey, come by again tomorrow, if you have time."
"I have the time. What's my reason?"
"Well, I said some pretty b*tchy things last night as well. I want the real William Beckett to meet the real Amy Linwood."
"Oh, he already has, and he likes what he's seen."
"That's certainly a relief, but come by anyway. It's my turn to make it up to you," Amy said with a smile before closing the car door and walking into the office.
