January Rain - Draco Malfoy Series [Part 34]

Created by nastiixthoughtsz on Friday, March 10, 2006

"Urhg," Moody grunted, looking taken aback as well. "Never mind," he told you, returning to his podium.

He began his usual short introductory speech, and you took a few notes with your newly returned quill, but you weren't paying as much attention as you normally did in this class.

"Now, seventh years, gather round the front of the room," Moody said, a few minutes later, "and we'll begin."

The sounds of chairs scraping as the students stood up startled you out of your thoughts, and you rose, too, following them to the front. You held back so that you were at the rear of the group, and when a still sullen Draco finally came to join them, you made sure to stand next to him.

Moody began talking again, explaining the experiment or whatever it was, his back turned as he illustrated his points on the blackboard.

Tugging on Draco's sleeve, you leaned over and whispered to him, "Thanks for that."

He stared straight ahead, jaw clenched, and replied in his own vicious whisper, "Why didn't you tell Dumbledore about Pansy?"

You were a little surprised that he'd found out everything so quickly, but thought seriously about his query before answering. "Because that's what she'd expect me to do, and I'm through having these bitching-matches with her."

He looked at you, annoyance evident. Then his face changed and he grabbed your chin. "What in hell happened to your face?" he demanded, a little too loudly.

Moody didn't turn to look at them--his magical eye was most likely fixed on them through the back of his head. "Malfoy! Jayden!" he barked, as he continued to write. "This is a classroom, and I suggest you leave your socializing outside of it!"

You hadn't been able to apply more make-up after your shower in P.E., and now you realized the fading greyish-purple bruise on your cheek was completely visible.

"Yes, sir," you said, yanking away Draco's hand by the wrist and smiling apologetically at the back of Moody's head. "It won't happen again."

They were forced to wait until the end of class before you two could talk again--and Draco wasted no time at all in doing so. No sooner had you stepped out into the hall, did he corner you, pulling you away from the crowd to stand near a stone statue of a unicorn in mid-leap.

"It was Pansy, wasn't it?" Draco demanded, touching your bruised cheekbone lightly.

"Quidditch," you lied. "I've tried out for the team."

He stared at you, silver-blue eyes hard, saying nothing.

You sighed and said in a low voice--though it was unnecessary with all the noise the other students were making in the hall around you two--,"I broke her nose. I'd say what goes around, comes around. It's called karma."

"That's a load of crap," he replied. "I know she provoked you, and she's only singled you out because of me."

You gave him a sidelong glance. "Flattering yourself, aren't you?" Then you rolled your eyes. "Why are you so pissed, anyway? You should be lapping it up, two girls fighting over you."

Draco opened his mouth to give you a scathing response, when Professor McGonagall walked by, spotted you two together, and ordered, "Get to class, you two. Now, before I start taking off points, and Miss Jayden, I've just seen Professor Dumbledore, and from what he tells me, you can't afford to be taking anything off."

Your last class of the day was Care of Magical Creatures with Hermione, who was in the same class as you. You met up with her before the two of you crossed the grounds to Hagrid's hut.

You had told Draco to meet you right after your last class so they could continue talking about your issues with Pansy. Since you had to report to detention and he had Quidditch practice (as the Seeker for Slytherin team), you two wouldn't have much time to talk, but he seemed determined to, and what could you do, really?
