The heart as an everlasting drum,
Beats strongly and loudly.
As though it wishes to break
Free from its cage of ribs.
Only when breathing deeply
And steadily shall it slow,
Ever so gradually, till it
Has resumed its slower, steady rhythm,
Such as it has known for almost all its life.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The heartbeat of a child,
So light and faint.
Any moment it may stop and
cease to continue. Growing still
And cold.
