The hypnotic rhythm of a summer’s rain echoes in my ears as I stare out the window of my vacant life. My daydreams leave me in your arms. We dance in the storm, it drums upon our heads, soaks us to the core. Rain speckled fingers intertwine, “Stay with me,” your words my intoxicating spell. Gazing into your eyes, taking in your rain streaked soul. The romantic taste of I Love You glimmers upon pursed lips. A promise, a new beginning…
A hairs-breath from destiny I turn away, afraid of love, threads unraveling, I’m falling apart. I run, the unrelenting rain pummels me like bullets. The remnants of my fragile heart hammer against my chest, their mangled pieces trailing in my wake.
Coming back to reality, my face drenched in tears, the bitter rain of my breaking heart. Lace up and step into the chilling downpour. The sky a symphony of bittersweet sorrow. Step, step, step, breath, my body in perfect rhythm. I leave it all behind; force myself to endeavor what’s ahead. I run because I run. Yet I still find myself wondering,
“Why must I run?”
